More  from the same auction: The Magnificent Thad Jones, Blue Note 1527. This was an original Lexington Avenue pressing that looked to be in M- condition for the record and probably VG++ for the cover. The final price was $2,555, with 11 bidders and 17 bids. Those Lexington Avenue labels with the scripted lettering still give me chills. And another: Joe Henderson, Inner Urge, Blue Note 4189. This was an original New York USA pressing that looked to be in M- condition for both the record and cover, with the cover protected by the original shrink wrap. Thirteen bidders, 29 bids and a final price of $1,028.91.

Condition still counts (sometimes): Sonny Clark Trio, Blue Note 1579. This was an original West 63^rd Street pressing  that had a start price of $2,000. The condition was “solid VG” for the vinyl, with some tics on the playback. The cover was VG++. The record did not sell this time around. I’m sure it will be back, if it is not back already.

Finally, Sabu, Palo Congo, Blue Note 1561, sold for $698. Jazz or not jazz, that seems to be the question. Either way, it’s a cool Blue Note cover, and a cool New York 23 label.

Here we go. A record with a bid. Three bids, in fact: Duke Jordan, Flight to Jordan, Blue Note 4046. This is an original West 63^rd Street pressing offered for auction by the Jazz Record Center. The record and cover both look to be in M- condition. The auction closes in a little more than four days and the bidding is at $1,600. If there’s one high-priced item from the Jazz Record Center, I would expect more to come. Let’s keep searching.

And here’s another: The Magnificent Thad Jones, Blue Note 1527. This is an original Lexington Avenue pressing. The record and cover are described as being in “excellent condition,” which I would take to be VG++ in the language that we normally use here at Jazz Collector. There are five bids and the price is $880. This one seems destined for the $1,000 bin, at least.

As I’m searching I’m passing some of the ones I saw last week and didn’t get bids, including Gil Melle, Gil’s Guests; and Sonny Red, Out of the Blue.   Don’t think they’ll do any better this week.

Finally, here’s a Blue Note you don’t see very often: Sabu, Palo Congo, Blue Note 1561.This is an original New York 23 pressing listed in VG condition for both the record and the cover. Bidding is in the $575 range with about three days left on the auction. I’ve never owned this record, never seen a copy other than in pictures, and never listed to the music. But, then again, I’ve only been collecting jazz for about 53 years.

I’m kind of enjoying this process of doing live eBay searches and  posting in real time. I may make a habit of posting this way.

Back to eBay, I have my eye on a couple of Blue Notes that still represent gaps in my collection. The first, mentioned at Jazz Collector all the time, is Lou Donaldson, Quartet, Quintet, Sextet, Blue Note 1537. This is an original Lexington Avenue pressing. The record sounds like it is kind of VG+ and the cover is listed as VG. Not what I would normally consider, but I am a gambler and the price is somewhat reasonable at $300 with about a day and a half left on the auction. I doubt I will do anything, but you never know. Then there is Sabu, Palo Congo, Blue Note 1561. Not sure why I would want this record, other than the fact that it is Blue Note 1561 and I don’t own it. Anyway, this is an original pressing with the New York 23 label. The record is listed as VG+ and the cover is VG. The start price is $300 and there are no bidders.

I think I missed this one as well: Sabu, Palo Congo, Blue Note 1561. This looked like an original pressing. The record was in M- condition and the cover was VG+.The top bid was more than $400, but it failed to meet the seller’s reserve price. Not surprising that the reserve was higher than that. We saw a copy of this sell for more than $800 just a few months ago. Another one I’ve never owned, but not one I’d place on my want list. Too many other records I’d prefer.

These closed yesterday: Sabu, Palo Congo, Blue Note 1561. I must admit, this is one I’ve never owned in any form, so 1561 has always been a blank in my Blue Note Collection. How is this record? Is it worth a listen? This one was in VG++ condition for the record and VG for the cover. It sold for $811. This one didn’t look quite right to me: Sonny Rollins, Volume 1, Blue Note 1542. It was listed as an original pressing, although it was a West 63rd Street pressing, so it wasn’t quite an original as we define it here. And it looked like the wrong cover for an original. The start price was about $300 and there were no bidders, which seems appropriate.

This one also has no bids and is closing in just a few hours: Kenny Burrell, Blue Lights Volume 2, Blue Note 1597. This is an original pressing with the Andy Warhol cover. The record is listed in VG condition with “quite a few surface scratches.” The cover is listed as VG++. The start price is around $200, which is pretty tempting if the cover is, indeed, really VG++.

Here’s another temptation:

John Jenkins and Kenny Burrell, Blue Note 1573. This is an original pressing in VG+ condition for both the record and the cover. The price is around $285, but there are still four days to go.

Ah, looks who’s back: Everyone’s favorite seller, bobdjukic. Here’s one of his listings: Hank Mobley Quintet, Blue Note 1550. This is listed as an “ultra rare” original pressing, but I wouldn’t mind seeing a picture of the labels if I were to bid, which I won’t. This one is listed in VG+ condition for the record and VG++ for the cover. The bidding has reached  around $525 and there are still more than two days to go.

There was that Kenny Burrell LP with the Andy Warhol cover: Kenny Burrell, Blue Note 1543. This was an original Lexington Avenue pressing in VG+ condition. It was also noteworthy that a previous owner had the lack of foresight and/or stupidity to write his name on the cover. A Warhol cover. Mmmmm. Bad move. I would imagine the writing on the cover had some impact on the price, but perhaps not. It sold for $1,155.

There there were the two copies of Sabu, Palo Congo, Blue Note 1561. This was the one that was in M- condition with a $999 start price. It wound up getting six bids and selling for $1,358.01. The other copy, Sabu, was VG+ for the record and VG for the cover and had the misprint of two Side One labels. Some people find those to be more interesting because they are more rare. As for me, I much prefer to have the proper labels on the proper sides. This copy sold for $460.

This one is from the seller funkyousounds, who is generating a lot of discussion on the earlier post, and how has a large number of highly collectible items closing in the next few hours:

Dexter Gordon, Dexter Blows Hot and Cool, Dootone 207. This was an original pressing with the red vinyl. The record was listed in G+ condition, which is never a good condition, and the cover was VG+. The price was $546. I’ve got an eye on a few more of this seller’s auctions, including: Hank Mobley, Roll Call, Blue Note 4058 and Lee Morgan, City Lights, Blue Note 1578, which both have the right address on the label but do not have deep grooves, as per the listing. Both are in the under-$200 price range with a few hours to go.

Blue Note 1561 would fill a gap in my personal collection and so would this: Kenny Burrell, Blue Note 1543. This is an original Lexington Avenue pressing — the last of the Lexingtons — and it is listed in VG+ condition for the record and VG for the cover. This is one of the Burrell’s with an Andy Warhol cover. The price is currently at about $200 with a day and a half or so to go. Hmmm. Tempting.But then again, it’s always tempting to try to fill in the gaps, isn’t it?

Here’s another temptation:

Hank Mobley and Lee Morgan, Peckin’ Time, Blue Note 1574. This one is listed in VG condition for both the record and the cover. The current price is about $110 with two days to go. The thing with these original Blue Notes is that many that look to be in VG condition, actually play brilliantly. So it’s a gamble. Perhaps one worth taking? We’ll see how the bidding goes.

Donald Byrd, Byrd in Hand, Blue Note 4019. This was an original pressing with the West 63rd Street address in M- condition, both record and cover. It sold for $364.99.

At Blakey, A Night at Birdland Volume 2, Blue Note 1522. This was an original pressing with the original cover and the Lexington Avenue address. It was in VG+ condition, both record and cover, and sold for $332.

The Amazing Bud Powell, Blue Note 5003. This was an original 10-inch pressing. The record was VG+ and the cover was M-. The price was $199.

George Wallington Showcase, Blue Note 5045. This was also a 10-inch LP.

The record was VG++ and the cover was M-. The price was $260.

Sabu, Palo Congo, Blue Note 1561. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing in M- condition, both record and cover. The price was $908.

Sonny Rollins Volume 1, Blue Note 1542. This was not an original pressing: It had the West 63rd Street address. The record was VG++ and the cover was VG. The price was $399.

Donald Byrd, Byrd in Flight, Blue Note 4048. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing in M- condition, both record and cover. The price was $265.

George Wallington Showcase, Blue Note 5045. This is an original 10-inch LP. It looks to be in VG++ condition, both record and cover. The current price is $260. The seller also has a 10-inch Bud Powell on Blue Note and a Donald Byrd 12-inch LP. You can check out his offerings, but hurry if you’re interested in bidding because they’re closing soon.

Ben Webster, The Consummate Artistry, Norgran 1001. When we first spotted this, it was at about $30 with just a few hours to go. It sold for $203.51. It was an original pressing in M-/VG++ condition.

Ornette Coleman, The Shape of Jazz to Come, Atlantic 1317. This was with the bulls-eye label in VG++/VG++ condition. It sold for $72.60

Miles Davis, Kind of Blue, Columbia 1355. This was a white label promo copy in VG+/VG++ condition. Price: $338

This one didn’t sell: The Three Sounds, Blue Note 1600. It was an original pressing, autographed by each of the members of the band and had a start price of just $45. Odd that no one wanted it, but it confirms our thought that collectors don’t seem to have as much interest in autographed records as one would suspect. Horace Silver, with Art Blakey and Sabu, Blue Note 1520. This was an original Lexington Avenue pressing in VG+/VG++ condition. This was the one from the collection of Donald Byrd. Price: $272

John Coltrane and Tadd Dameron, Mating Call, Prestige 7070. This was an original New York pressing in VG++/VG++ condition. Price: $272

Steve Lacy, Soprano Sax, Prestige 7125. This was an original New York pressing in VG+/M- condition. Price: $202.50 

Here’s another one that did not sell: Bennie Green, Soul Stirrin’, Blue Note 1599. The top bid was $154 and that did not meet the seller’s reserve price.

I said I liked the original Verves and I like the prices. Here are two nice examples, of great records for reasonable prices: Dizzy Gillespie with Sonny Rollins and Sonny Stitt, Sonny Side Up, Verve 8262. This was in M-/VG++ condition and sold for $77. Stan Getz, Award Winner, Verve 8296. This was in M-/V++ condition and sold for $48.95. Both records were original pressings with the trumpeter logo.

Red Garland, All Morning Long, Prestige 7130. This was an original pressing with the original cover in M-/VG+ condition. Price: $308.
