Johnny Griffin, The Congregation, Blue Note 1580. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing with the Andy Warhol cover. The record was VG+ and the cover was VG. Price: $360.

Booker Little Four, United Artists 4034. This was an original pressing. The record looked to be in VG+ condition, the cover VG+ as well. Price: $104.70

Grachan Moncur III, Evolution, Blue Note 4135. This was an original mono pressing in M- condition, vinyl and cover. Price $235.83

Mary Paich Quartet Featuring Art Pepper, Tampa 28. This was an original mono pressing, red vinyl, in M-/M- condition. Price: $700

Elmo Hope, Informal Jazz, Prestige 7043. This was an original New York pressing. The record was VG++ ad the vinyl was only in G condition. Price: $261.90

Eric Dolphy, Outward Bound, Prestige New Jazz 8236. This was an original deep groove pressing with the purple label. The record was M- and the cover was VG++. Price: $335

Sonny Rollins and the Modern Jazz Quartet, Prestige 7020. This was an original New York pressing with the original orange cover. The record and cover were both in M- condition. Price: $826.60

Lester Young, Norgran 1022. This was an original yellow-label pressing with a beautiful David Stone Martin cover. The record and cover were in VG+ condition. Price: $223.30

Curtis Fuller, Volume 3, Blue Note 1583. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing. The record and cover were in VG+ condition. Price: $360.55

Finally, there was Eddie Costa, House of Blue Lights, Dot 3206. This was an original mono pressing in M-/VG+ condition. It was available as a Buy-It-Now item for $420. It did not sell. The seller has since relisted it as a Best Offer/Buy it Now listing. The Buy-It-Now price is $480, but there is already a best offer of $400.

We promised a few more items to watch on eBay today, so here goes: Elmo Hope, Informal Jazz, Prestige 7043. You’d certainly want this one if you have a copy with a great cover and poor record, because this is just the opposite: An original New York pressing in VG++ condition, with a cover in just G condition. The current price is $91. This LP features Mssrs. Coltrane and Mobley. And here’s a beauty: The Marty Paich Quartet Featuring Art Pepper, Tampa 28. This is an original pressing with the red vinyl. Both the record and cover are listed as M-. Current price is $700.  Finally, here’s a peak at a record Jazz Collector is watching for tomorrow: Charlie Parker Volume 4, Savoy 9011. This is a 10-inch LP and I think this is a second cover (if there are any Savoy experts to help, please feel free to post a comment). Nevertheless, it’s a great cover and a very cool looking LP.

Once in a while I run into albums I’ve never seen before and here’s one: Bob Gordon, Moods in Jazz, Tampa 26. I know this is a record from the 1950s, but I have to ask about that cover: Is that Sarah Palin doing who knows what to a moose? Click the link for a better view, but this is definitely one weird cover.

Roost seems to be an under-valued label, but we’ve seen this one go for decent prices in the past: Beverly Kenney with Jimmy Rowles and the Basie-ites, Roost 2218. This one is currently under $20, in decent condition.

This is a record that seems to be as much an audiophile collectible as it is a jazz collectible: Bill Berry, For Duke, M+K Real Time Records RT 101. I happen to have a copy and it not only sounds great, the music is top-flight as well. Also, in look at the records on sale this weekend, I noticed a couple of other copies, so you can just do a search if you’re interested in buying one. 

Here’s a favorite: Sonny Rollins With The Modern Jazz Quartet, Prestige 7029. This is a New York pressing, with an orange cover. I have a New York pressing with a yellow cover. Does anyone know the difference — did one come first and, if so, which one? Also, this is a dealer who has other nice records on eBay this weekend, so you might want to view his other items.

Time to catch up on some of the items we’ve been watching on eBay the past few days. Tommy Flanagan Overseas, Prestige 7134, finally sold yesterday for $850. It was like an expensive suit that kept getting marked down. First it was on last week for a start price of $1,100, then this week was on for a Buy it Now price of $950. Last year, as we mentioned before, a nice copy of the same LP sold for $2,414. At $850, the Flanagan LP wasn’t even the highest priced item to sell so far this week. That honor, at least among the items we’ve been watching, goes to a copy of Hank Mobley, Blue Note 1568, which went for $1,300. Over the weekend, a copy of Cliff Jordan, Blue Note 1565, sold for $1,402.

We don’t only look at the Blue Notes or the other high ticket items on eBay. We’re constantly looking for bargains as well. Lately, however, we haven’t been able to find any.  Case in point: Here are the sale prices of the other items we mentioned in yesterday’s newsletter:

Jackie McLean, Capuchin Swing, Blue Note 4038, in M-/M- condition. Price: $365. 

Jackie McLean, Bluesnik, Blue Note 4067, in M-/M- condition. Price: $200. If you missed out on this copy, another copy in worse condition is up for auction later today.

The other item we mentioned was Art Blakey Big Band, Bethlehem 6027. This doesn’t close till later today.

Collector Q+A

Q. I own the LP Georgie Auld in the Land of Hi Fi on the Emarcy label. The liner notes don’t list the musicians. Could you please tell me who plays on this album?

A. Yes. The trumpet players are Maynard Ferguson, Conrad Gozzo, Mannie Klein and Ray Linn; the sax players are Willie Schwartz, Ted Nash, Babe Russin and Chuck Genry; the trombone players are Tommy Pederson, Frank Rosolino and Si Zentner; the pianist is Arnold Ross; the guitarists are Al Hendrickson and Barney Kessel; the bassists are Joe Mondragon and JoeComfort; the drummer is Alvin Stoller. The source of this information is The Jazz Discography by Tom Lord, Version 3.3. If you’re a serious collector, the CD-ROM version is definitely a worthwhile tool.
