There is no mention of the booklet, and no pictures of the booklet, so my expectation is that there would be no booklet, making this particular copy incomplete. So far there is one bid at $750, with the auction closing in a couple of days. Whilst Transitioning, here is a new one to me: Donald Byrd Sextet, Transition 5. This looks to be a limited edition numbered reissue, and it seems to include the booklet as well. Looks pretty cool, if you are into numbered reissues. This is part of the Sam Records Artisan Series, number 138 out of 300. Since I don’t follow the reissues market as closely as original pressings, perhaps someone can enlighten us about this record and this series.

Charles Mingus, Pethecanthropus Erectus, Atlantic 1237. This looks to be an original black label pressing that looks to be in VG++ condition for the record and M- for the cover. A fine looking copy, indeed. Bidding is in the $270 range with more than two days left on the auction. Two Transitions, two Atlantics: Tony Fruscella, Atlantic 1220. This is also an original black label pressing. Looks to be like the record is in VG or maybe VG+ condition, and the cover is VG+. Bidding is close to $200, with more than two days left on the auction.

Let’s finish off today’s post with two Blue Notes: Jackie McLean, Let Freedom Ring, Blue Note 4106. This looks to be an original New York USA mono pressing in M- condition for the record and the cover. The bidding is in the $250 range and this auction also closes on Sunday. Lee Morgan, Volume 3, Blue Note 1557. This is an original pressing with the New York 23 label. The record is probably in VG condition and the cover is listed as VG+, although there is a water stain on the back cover that might bring the grade down for some potential buyers. Bidding is in the $399 range, and this is another auction that closes on Sunday.

The post Transitioning Back with Rare Jazz Vinyl first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

Whew, it’s been a long time between posts. Sorry about that. All is well, but there’s been a lot going on here. I’m even back in New York City for a bit. Set up a new turntable here and brought some records back to the apartment, mostly duplicates. Haven’t been following eBay closely, but I should be back in regular action, such as it is, starting today. So, let’s look at some of the jazz records and auctions we’ve missed along the way, starting with Hank Mobley Sextet, Blue Note 1560. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing with the deep grooves, ear, etc. The record and cover both looked to be in M- condition. The final price was $3,036.23.

Another Blue Note, this one from the seller vinyl-house-uk: Paul Chambers, Bass on Top, Blue Note 1569. This was also an original West 63rd Street pressing, listed in EX condition for the record and EX/EX+ for the cover. The final price was approximately $1,965. From the same seller was Charles Mingus, Pithecanthropus Erectus, Atlantic 1237. This was an original black label pressing listed in EX condition for both the record and the cover. The final price was about $565.

I put this one in my queue because I wasn’t quite sure what to make of it: Everybody Digs Bill Evans, Riverside Stereophonic 1129. This was an Original Jazz Classics pressing, clearly presented as such by the seller. The final price was $135. Have I been so focused on the higher end of the market that I’ve missed a huge increase in demand for OJC pressings, or is this just an aberration?

I know there’s been a run-up on certain pressings from the Muse label, in particular this record: Roy Brooks, the Free Slave, Muse 5003. This was an original pressing listed in VG+ condition for the record and VG for the cover. The final price was $210.50.

This is another one that has seen a hike in demand: McCoy Tyner, Today and Tomorrow, Impulse A-63. This was an original orange label pressing with the Van Gelder stamp in the dead wax. The record and cover were listed in M- condition. The final price was $276.

One more for today. How about another Atlantic: Tony Fruscella, Atlantic 1220. This was an original black label pressing listed in VG++ condition for the record and VG+ for the cover. The final price was $810. It seems quite likely that the interest in Tony Fruscella today may be higher than it was at any point during his lifetime.
The post Still Here, Still Watching That Jazz Vinyl first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

Time to clear out the old watch list this Thanksgiving holiday weekend here in the States, starting with Mal Waldron, Mal-1, Prestige 7090. This was an original New York yellow label pressing in M- condition for the record and VG+ for the cover. The final price was $536.69. I get the sense that the Prestiges are starting to get a little more interest from the collectors will to pay top dollar. These are certainly great music and packaging. I put a few of the Prestiges on the turntable the other day – Tenor Madness, Soultrane and When Farmer Met Gryce. Can’t beat it. I don’t own an original pressing of Mal-1, but I’m sure it’s of a similar quality.

The same seller had a bunch of other nice records I was watching, including East Coasting by Charlie Mingus, Bethlehem 6019. This was an original red label pressing that was listed in M- condition for both the record and the cover. The final price was $495. Based on what I can see on Popsike, that seems to be a new high for this particular record. One more: Johnny Griffin, A Blowing Session, Blue Note 1559. This looked to be an original pressing with the ear, deep grooves and New York 23 labels. The record was listed as M- and the cover VG++. The final price was $1,290. This record has sold for over $2,000 several times in the past, and I had thought this copy would be in that range, but there were only four bids. Perhaps I missed something in the listing (not that a bid of nearly $1,300 isn’t significant).

Tony Fruscella, Atlantic 1220. This was an original black label pressing listed in VG+ condition for the record and VG for the cover. This one had 19 bids from nine bidders and sold for a final price of $477.50. Previously we were talking about the harp and Dorothy Ashby, so I put this one in the queue: Dorothy Ashby, Afro-Harping, Cadet 809. This looked to be an original blue label in VG+ condition for both the record and the cover. I was never a fan of the Cadet records because they felt kind of cheap to me, but I know this one has a certain cachet as a collectible It sold for $213.49.
