The record and cover were both in M- condition. It’s not a record we’ve typically covered in the Jazz Collector Price Guide because it rarely gets collectible prices. I guess we’ll start covering it now: This one sold for $493.88. Wow. I’ve had an original copy of this record for a long time, since the 70s in fact, but I also remember a version of a Coltrane Greatest Hits double-record on Impulse where they had Africa but eliminated the Elvin Jones drum solo so they could get more songs onto the package. There was something that always seemed unseemly about that, a violation of some kind of moral code, particularly since Coltrane was no longer alive to object.

I always liked this record, but haven’t listened to in in a while: Zoot Sims in Paris, United Artists 14013. This was an original pressing with the grey labels and was probably in VG+ condition for the record and VG++ for the cover. It sold for $202.51.

Here’s an update on some 10-inch jazz vinyl:

Clifford Brown, New Star on the Horizon, Blue Note 5032. This was an original Lexington Avenue pressing in VG++ condition for the record and VG+ for the cover. It sold for $349.

Dexter Gordon Quintet, Dial 204. This was an original 10-inch pressing in VG++/M- condition for the record and M- for the cover. It sold for $355.

Horace Silver Trio/Art Blakey with Sabu, Blue Note 5034. This was an original 10-inch pressing in M- condition for both the record and the cover. The asking price was about $250 and, surprisingly, there were no bidders. I imagine we will see this back again soon.

I do think that the previous post set a new high for comments on Jazz Collector — and counting — and we came within 10 page views of our all time high for a single day, set last summer during the midst of my stories about purchasing the record collection of Irving Kalus. In any case, I received a missive from our friends at the Jazz Record Center that they have a new auction on eBay, so I took a look over to see what they had. Here are some of the things I found, starting with: Serge Chaloff, Boston Blow-Up, Capitol 6510. This is an original promo pressing that looks to be in M- condition for the record and possibly M- or VG++ for the cover. I haven’t seen that many yellow label Capitols through the years, to be honest. This one does not seem to have the same cachet as Blue Serge, perhaps minus the presence of Sonny Clark on piano, so it will be interesting to watch this and see if it fetches a collectible price. The starting bid is $50.

Art Farmer, Modern Art, United Artists 4007. Like Blue Serge, this one benefits from the presence of a gifted piano player — both musically and as a collectible. In this case the pianist of note is Bill Evans. This is an original pressing in M- condition for the record and perhaps M- or VG++ for the cover. The start price is $50 and there is already one bid.

Pepper Adams,10 to 4 at the 5 Spot, Riverside 265. This is an original blue label pressing in M- condition for both the record and the cover. The record is newly listed with nearly seven days to go, but already there are two bids and the price is close to $100. Perhaps we’ll see a bidding war for this one. Someone asked me recently if the Five Spot was still around. I told him that it was long gone, but I do remember being there as a kid or young teen. My father used to take us to jazz concerts when we were quite young. I remember my kid brother at 5 or 6 falling asleep at a Kenny Burrell show at one of the clubs. I was probably at the Five Spot half a dozen times. I know I saw Thelonious Monk there, but can’t remember anyone else. I’m also not sure when the Five Spot actually closed. Just tried doing a quick Google search, but it didn’t come up easily. I imagine someone out there will either know or be more persistent in finding out.

Let’s catch up on some jazz vinyl we’ve been watching on eBay, shall we?

I expected this to fetch a higher price but, as I said earlier, I think the picture of the back cover was out of synch with the description: Jackie McLean, Capuchin Swing, Blue Note 4038. This was listed in M- condition and sold for $331.

This is a real nice record that doesn’t have the cachet of a Blue Note or a Prestige, but has excellent personnel, a nice cover, deep groove, etc.: Booker Little Four, United Artists 4034. This was an original pressing in VG++ condition for the record and the cover. The price was $118.25.

This is one of those that can stir up more debate about what, exactly, is an original pressing:

Sonny Rollins Volume 1, Blue Note 1542. This one had the West 63rd Street address, with the deep grooves and RVG. In my mind this is not an original pressing, because the first batch of these that came out of Blue Note had the Lexington Avenue address. I know it’s an early pressing, but not a first press. Does that make it less collectible? Absolutely. This one sold for $300 in VG+ condition.

Finally, there was this: The Eminent Jay Jay Johnson Volume One, Blue Note 1505. This was an original Lexington Avenue pressing with the flat edge. It was in M- condition for the record and VG+ or VG++ for the cover. It sold for $233.50. Does this mean the market prices are coming down? Perhaps, but as we’ve seen for years, the market is cyclical and prices on eBay are always dependent upon who happens to be bidding at that particular moment. For example: In the Jazz Collector Price Guide we have one incident of this record — without the deep grooves — selling for more than $1,500. That, to me is an eBay aberration.
The post Jazz Vinyl Today: Jackie, Newk, JJ, Booker Little first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

Zoot Sims, Stretching Out, United Artists 4023. This was an original deep groove mono pressing. It was a promo copy, with a promo stamp and the white label and it was in M- condition, for both the record and the cover. The price was $124. What do you think: Does the promo stamp enhance the value of a record for you, or detract, or neither. I recall in the world of rock albums, the promo stamp was always considered a good thing, but I’ve never heard that one way or another in the jazz world. Which leads me to this LP: Bill Evans, Waltz For Debby, Riverside 399. This was an original pressing with the white promo label. The record was

listed in VG condition, although the seller said it played well, and the cover was also VG. The price was $560. I have a sense that this is one of the jazz records that would be enhanced by the promo markings.

We were also watching a couple of interesting, hard-to-find LPs by Thad Jones, including: Thad Jones, Mad Thad, Period 1208. This was an original pressing and it was listed in VG++ condition for both the record and the cover. The price was $525. There there was this: Thad Jones, The Jones Boys, Period 1210. This was an original pressing. The vinyl was M- and the cover was VG+. The price on this was $130.50. Why the price differential between the two Thad Jones LPs? Who knows? This is eBay, after all.
The post Catching Up: What’s a Promo Worth? first appeared on jazzcollector.com.
