It’s off to hunt we go. Here’s a new listing: Freddie Hubbard, Hub Cap, Blue Note 4073. This is an original West 63rd street pressing, one of the last of the West 63rd Blue Notes. This one is graded in VG+ condition for the record. The seller has a bunch of pictures of the cover. My grade would be VG based on the pictures. There is nearly a week left in the auction and the start price is $500, with no bidders so far.

Here’s another one with a start price of $500 and no bids: Dexter Gordon, Our Man in Paris, Blue Note 4146. This looks to be an original mono pressing with the New York USA label. The record and cover both look to be in VG++ condition based on the seller’s description.

Let’s keep going through eBay. We’re bound to fine something that has a bid.

Ah, here we go. A Blue Note, of course: Hank Mobley, Soul Station, Blue Note 4031. This is an original West 63rd Street pressing. The record and cover are both listed in VG+ condition, with not a lot of additional details or explanations. The bidding is in the $375 range, but it has not yet met the seller’s reserve price. There are four days left in the auction.

We are now on page three of eBay, 60 listings per page. So we have been through 120 records, some nice ones, but any more nice ones with bids. We are under $200. Let’s see what awaits us as we scroll down this page.

Here we go again. Another Blue Note. Big surprise: Donald Byrd, A New Perspective, Blue Note 84124. This is a stereo pressing with the New York USA label. The record is listed in VG+ condition and the cover is VG++. There is one bid at $150. I love this record, but I’ve never regarded as one of the more valuable of the Blue Notes, possibly because it is so different, with the voices, and possibly because it was so successful and there were probably more copies in print than its neighbors in the early 1960s Blue Note catalogue.

If you listen to my radio show tonight at 8 p.m. Eastern on WTBR FM Pittsfield, you will hear Beast of Burden from this record. My theme for this week’s show has to do with records having a 24 in their catalogue number, hence, Blue Note 4124. I also play Jackie McLean’s Swing, Swang, Swingin’, Blue Note 4024, but not Kenny Dorham at the Café Bohemia, Blue Note 1524, because I recently sold my copy through the Carolina Soul auction. It was fun putting the show together. The only one I found worth playing with the actual number 2024, was Things Ain’t What They Used to Be, Prestige Swingville 2024.

Which brings me to . . . . Happy New Year, Jazz Collectors everywhere. May the new year bring peace, health, comfort and rare vinyl to you all.
The post Jazz Vinyl for the New Year first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

Seeing some light at the end of the tunnel, so hopefully I can do my regular posts more frequently, in addition to keeping up with my radio show and podcasts. I’ve been in these circumstances before and expressed similar hopes so let’s see what happens. In the meantime, I’ve been on eBay this morning and put a bunch of jazz vinyl collectibles into my watch list, so here goes, starting with Hank Mobley and Lee Morgan, Peckin’ Time, Blue Note 1574. This looks to be an original West 63rd Street pressing. The record is listed in VG+ condition and the cover is VG. There are 20 bids and six bidders so far, with the auction closing later today. The current price is $515 and I would say this one is a candidate for the $1,000 bin.

Here’s a 10-inch Blue Note, with the auction also closing later today: Gil Melle Quintet Volume 2, Blue Note 5033. This is notable, among other reasons, for the presence of the great guitar player Tal Farlow. The record is listed in VG+ condition and the cover is VG. The start price is about $400 and so far there are no bids (and not a lot of watchers). I have a copy of this record, but I can’t recall the last time I listened to it, if ever, even though I am a big fan of Mr. Farlow, who, believe it or not, showed up at my sister’s wedding and played some guitar for the crowd. True story and I have the picture to prove it, but that story will have to wait for another day when I am back in The Berkshires.

Chet Baker, It Could Happen to You, Riverside 278. The record and cover are listed in M- condition. The start price is about $300, the seller has a low rating score, there is only one picture, and there is room to question whether the cover is a real M- based on that picture. The record has sold for more than $300 at times according to Popsike. One of the reasons I’m writing about this record is that I played a track on my radio show/podcast last week, where I focused on the Riverside label. Part 2 of the Riverside show should air this evening at 8 p.m. If you want to listen live you can go to WTBR-FM Pittsfield. Just go to “Listen.” If you can’t listen live, I should be able to post the new podcast in the next few days.
The post Rare Jazz Vinyl On eBay Again first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

I’ve really enjoyed doing the show, but I have to admit that it has taken away time that might otherwise have been devoted to posting here at the Jazz Collector web site. Hopefully, I will soon be able to strike a better balance, especially because doing the radio show is getting me more involved with my collection and listening much more attentively. For example, today’s show was devoted to John Coltrane, as a leader, playing standards, on the Prestige label. Soultrane, Settin’ the Pace, Lush Life, et al. Great stuff. Last week, I did Bill Evans as a sideman, and the week before the show was devoted to Thelonious Monk. Sound interesting? Well, the shows are now available to be downloaded as podcasts. Go to this site: WTBRFM.COM. There’s a tab for shows, and under the tab for podcasts you will find the familiar Jazz Collector logo at the very bottom.

As of now, there are five podcasts available:

June 11 is a general introduction, some Cannonball, Horace Silver, Miles, Brubeck and more, with a bunch of personal stories mixed in.

June 18 continues the introduction, Rollins, Trane, Miles and a taste of Shades of Redd (of course).

June 25 is devoted to Sonny Rollins on Prestige

July 2 is devoted to some interesting Prestige recordings from the mid and late 1960s, perhaps into 1970 or even 1971.

July 9 is Monk.

The Bill-Evans-as-sideman show will air live this Sunday at 8 pm Eastern. If you want to listen live, you can stream it at the same link I listed earlier. Or, you can wait for the podcast.

As I mentioned, I’ve never done radio before, so if you do listen, please be understanding. I’m definitely looking for feedback. I know it’s not perfect, or even close, and I tend to cringe when I make a mistake or forget to say something obvious. But I’m seeing improvement from show to show to show.

My biggest bugaboo, believe it or not, has been dealing with surface noise on the records. The main conceit of the show is that I’m playing vinyl from my own collection. Some of the records are not in as great a shape as I’d hoped, and I’m not playing them on my Linn Sondek turntable when I’m in the studio. Also, there have been times where I haven’t taken the care to clean the records first, which came back to bite me today during the Coltrane show, which will air July 23. The other major conceit of the show is the idea that I am playing the records for you as if you were sitting with me in my living room and we were talking about the records and the music, although, being alone in the studio, it’s a monologue and not a conversation.

From my standpoint, the main thing is that I’m really having fun doing the show and the people at the radio station have been very supportive and have let me do whatever I want to do as long as I don’t violate any FCC rules and follow the station’s guidelines. I have ideas for zillions of shows and, fortunately, even after scaling back the collection by about 4,000 records, I still have more than enough music to do as many shows as I want. And if I choose to play Coltrane for two hours every week, would that be such a bad thing?

Overall, I’ve been extremely pleased with the way things have gone in my dealings with Carolina Soul. They have been professional in every respect. Very communicative, clear, consistent. They have been prompt with payments, and have answered any questions I’ve had with clear explanations. As for differences of opinion that we may have had on grading: I respect what they do and how they do it. I heard from several winners of the auctions that they agreed with me that some of the records were undergraded. Yet, Carolina Soul also experienced a number of returns. In fact, about 20 of my records that were returned are on eBay right now. For example: Andrew Hill, Black Fire, Blue Note 4151. I’ll provide a more complete list at the end of this post.

In addition to selling about 600 records through Carolina Soul, I had mentioned in a previous post that I had another 3,500 or so records I was hoping to sell to a local dealer/friend/acquaintance. That transaction also happened and he came to the house with a colleague and picked up the records a few weeks ago. I sent him an email asking how he has been doing with the records, but haven’t heard back yet. In any case, I’ve shrunk my collection by about 4,000 records and feel great about it. I’ve done a couple of reorganizations since then, and I find that the collection is less overwhelming and I’m able to enjoy the records more, and listen to them more frequently and attentively.

Another reason I’ve been more attentive to the records is that I am now hosting a radio show here in my local community in The Berkshires. It is called Jazz Collector Live and it is on WTBR-FM Pittsfield. I’ve taped three shows so far and, last I heard, the first show is scheduled to debut tonight at 8 p.m. Eastern. I realize the show is called Jazz Collector Live and, in fact, it is not live. To me, it’s like John Coltrane Live at Birdland or Sonny Rollins Live at the Village Vanguard. The show was live when I recorded it, so that makes it a live recording. Anyway, the show will appear “live” tonight and you will be able to stream it or download it in a few weeks, once I have a few more shows under my belt. I’ll talk a lot more about it in future posts and definitely solicit feedback from my friends here. I’ve never done radio before and I’m really enjoying it.

The radio show is a volunteer gig and is a result of me trying to scale back on my work, which has been happening, slowly but surely. For the past six weeks or so (pretty much since my last post on Jazz Collector), I’ve been winding down my existing work assignments and trying to limit new projects that I take on. This has meant that my nose has been to the grindstone with working. It has also taken up a lot of my brainpower and I’ve had less time to devote to posting here. In any case, this past Wednesday I got caught up on all of my work assignments. I still have a new one coming in this week, but I’m really hoping to be working less, especially during the summer. Perhaps that will translate into more time doing Jazz Collector, but I’m experienced enough to know that I’ve thought those thoughts before and it hasn’t necessarily translated into action. So, we’ll see what happens. In the meantime, here’s the list of my records being sold this week by Carolina Soul:
