The Return of Art, The Blue Note Story, Blue’s Moods

Another day, another batch of jazz vinyl on eBay. What’s up there now?

The Return of Art Pepper, Jazz West 10. This is an original pressing. The record is VG++ and the cover is VG-, which is pretty clear from the picture. The price is $240.50. When I first started collecting jazz records all I cared about was the music: The cover didn’t matter nearly as much. Now, however, that I have more music than I will ever listen to, I find that the condition of the covers is of pretty much equal value. Not that I don’t appreciate an original Blue Note with a little wear on the cover. I do. I also appreciate an original Blue Note with a little wear on the vinyl as well.

Remember I wrote that post about The Blue Note Story, a little pamphlet I found in an old Sidney Bechet record? Well, there’s one on sale on eBay now with an original copy of this LP: Thelonious Monk, Genius of Modern Music, Blue Note 5002. This is an original 10-inch pressing and it is listed in what looks to be M- condition. It also has the pamphlet which is way cool. The current price is $201.50. It will go for a lot more.

This one always seems to get a nice price: Blue Mitchell, Blue’s Moods, Riverside 336. This looks to be in what we would describe as VG+ or VG++ condition for both the record and the vinyl. It is being offered by stereojack’s,  very reputable seller up in the Boston area. The current price is $140.50. I do own a copy of this record, so I will have to put it on at some point soon to see why it is in such demand, compared to some other Blue Mitchell Riverside records.

  • Blue’s version of “Sweet Pumpkin” is priceless…regardless of the lp’s price! Look for Bill Henderson’s vocal version. Blue and Wynton Kelly made a great combo, too.

  • If the gentleman who’s apparently willing to pay ANY amount for the Monk lp is reading this, I’m the guy bidding on it, pushing the price up for you.

Nothing bothers me more about bidding on ebay than the greedy “collectors” with the deep pockets who set ridiculously high maximum bids with hours left to go in an auction. At this point (nearing $600), I don’t even want to win it anymore. But I do hope you’re forced to expend your entire max bid.

    Good luck!

  • is it that you can’t afford higher prices, or is do you hink it is not worth such a price? ..Can someone help it that he has a lot of money to spend on something that he thinks it’s worth?

  • I’m also curious, what’s wrong with someone wanted to get something at any cost. I mean it sucks if you want it too, but I pretty much want NM copies of most collectible Jazz records but I know that I can’t afford it so I do what I can. Sometimes I win, mostly I’m outbid. But I just don’t see anything wrong with someone wanting to spend very high dollar to fill out there collection. I’ve done it before and would do it more often if I could(or if I was near the end of completing a catalog). I mean, the value of something is just what someone is willing to pay for it right?
