Quickie Quiz

Just found out the other day that the pianist Eddie Higgins passed away. He and his wife, the singer Meredith d’Ambrosio, were friends of my parents down in Florida. Anyway, the question is this: In 1960 Eddie was a sideman on a date with Lee Morgan. What was the record, what was the label?

a VJ album in quintet format. He also had a album on VJ under his own name.

  • expoobediant on VJ

  • Saw a copy of VJLP-3015 mono original LP Lee Morgan-Expoobident (1960). Black/rainbow oval label, deep groove in VG shape (vinyl&sleeve) go for $13.50 recently. Is that an example of two-tier pricing?

  • Everyone is so quick with the right answers these days. Yes Expoobident. That $13.50 could be indicative of the two-tier market, although records in VG condition are never the best basis for comparison. I haven’t tracked Expoobident in the Price Guide previously, which indicates that perhaps it has never been a high ticket item. By contrast, Here’s Lee Morgan on VeeJay has been tracked three times, from $150 to $305. — al

I think the VJ case indicates a 2-tier market. Let’s assume a VJ price $ 150 to 305, as you say. VJ produced prime music with “Blue Note” artists Lee Morgan, Wayne Shorter, Clifford Jordan. The question is how much this music on a Blue Note pressing/issue anno 1960 would have fetched. Well, at least double, if not triple.
