Back in Action and, Finally, Back on eBay (Looking, Not Selling)

I promised to get back to watching rare jazz vinyl on eBay, so here I am again, but at some point I also expect to weigh in on some of the comments on the previous post. Meanwhile, we have Paul Gonsalves, Boom-Jackie-Boom Chick, Vocalion LAE 587. This looks to be an original British pressing. The record and cover are both listed in VG++ condition. The bidding is in the $280 range with more than two days left on the auction. What’s the story on the record’s title again? I’m sure it’s been mentioned somewhere on Jazz Collector, but I can’t find it. From the same seller is Duke Pearson, “Wahoo!”, Blue Note 4191. This looks to be an original New York USA pressing. The record and cover are either VG+ or VG++, depending on your interpretation of the seller’s description. I would tend to be on the conservative side and go with VG+, but, then again, I am not a potential bidder for this record. Blue Notes and Brubeck

Following up on a few of those heavy hitters we were watching on eBay, starting with Cliff Jordan, Blue Note 1565. This was an original pressing with the New York 23 labels, listed in M- condition for the record and probably VG+ for the cover. When we first wrote about this record the bidding was in the $500 range and we predicted it would eventually sell for between $1,000 and $2,000, if not more. Didn’t quite make it to $2,000 but came close at $1,809. The same seller had Lou Donaldson, Lou Takes off, Blue Note 1591. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing that looked to be in M- condition for the record and EX for the cover. The final price was $1,425. Read more

Back in Business, Blue Note Style

Whilst I have immensely enjoyed writing and sharing those personal essays, I know that most of you come to Jazz Collector for the really important stuff, which is keeping track of record prices and sales on eBay, so we can all marvel at how smart and fortunate we were to have bought our records below market value, or we can lament the unfortunate reality that buying the top rare jazz collectibles at today’s market prices is beyond the capacity of many of us, either from a financial perspective or because it offends our basic sensibilities to pay top dollar rather than keep hunting for a bargain, even if it may mean never owning an original pressing of a record that we covet deeply. The point of that rather long sentence is that it is time to get back to business, and since so many of us have a soft spot for Blue Notes, I have decided that today will be a Blue Note day here at Jazz Collector, starting with Wayne Shorter, Ju Ju, Blue Note 4182. This looks to be an original pressing with the New York USA label, Van Gelder and ear. The record and cover are both listed in Ex condition. The price is now close to $400 with more than a day left on the auction. As we have all seen, the price of these later era original pre-Liberty Blue Notes has risen markedly over the past few years. If we haven’t seen these break into the $1,000 bin yet, it looks like that is just a matter of time.

Here Are Jazz Collectibles You Won’t See Every Day

test-pressing-jazz-vinyl-a-love-supremeTwo of our regular readers, Clifford and Michael, separately sent me links to this rare jazz collectible, wondering if it was legitimate: John Coltrane, A Love Supreme, Impulse A-77, Test Pressing. Take a close look at it. Does it really say “Ken” Coltrane? Anyway, it looks legit to me. Unfortunately, it was only in VG condition and, of course, it didn’t have a cover. The final price was $300, which seems pretty reasonable to me for what I imagine is a pretty rare collectible.

One of our readers, Dave Sockel, recently was in touch with a relative of Duke Pearson and sent me a PDF of this very cool collectible — duke-pearson-session-book-1969-1970. It includes rehearsals, musicians and their fees, session dates, comments on the sessions and dozens of signatures from the various musicians, confirming their payments. Thanks to Dave for sharing and allowing me to post this on Jazz Collector.

Shock and Awe!!!!!!

duke copyReaders continue to express shock and awe at the prices on the funkyousounds auction of the Dr. Herb Wong collection. One missive comes in from Dylan concerning this record: Duke Pearson, The Right Touch, Blue Note 84267. This is a Liberty pressing. An original Liberty, but a Liberty nonetheless. And it is a stereo pressing. This one had a promo stamp. The record was M- and the cover was VG++. The price was $560. And then there was Gerry Mulligan, Night Lights, Phillips 600-108. This is the one we mentioned the other day. Stereo pressing, promo stamp, VG++ condition. We were surprised when the bidding had reached $60. The final price was $434. If anyone has a viable explanation for this one, I’d love to hear it: Duke Ellington and Johnny Hodges, Blues Summit Verve 8822. This is a reissue — the type that is very hard to sell on eBay for even $10 or $15. This was a sealed copy and it sold for $349.67. Or this one: Miles Davis, Milestones, Columbia 40837. This is just a plain old reissue. I remember seeing these all the time in $2 or $5 bins. This one sold for $278. Hush and Go: A Pearson and PC Day

Duke copyJust spent some time perusing eBay and added a few more items to our watch list, which is not the same as our wish list. Here’s some of the jazz vinyl we’re watching, starting with The Duke Pearson Quintet, Hush, Jazzline 3302. This is an original pressing of a record that you hardly ever see posted on eBay. This one is in M- condition for the record and probably VG+ for the cover, depending upon your level of discernment. For me, it’s VG+. The bidding is in the $300 range and there are still more than two days to go. If you check out this record, check out the seller’s other listings. It is one of the dealers from Italy who often has very nice listings. In addition to Hush, for example, you will see Paul Chambers, Go!, VeeJay 1014. Back on eBay, Finally

bill evansCatching up on a few remnant items on my watch list, then will plow forward with some records that are on auction this week, which is also the week of the WFMU Record Fair, which is where I will be on Friday and Friday only.

Bill Evans, Waltz for Debby, Riverside 399. This was an original white-label promo copy listed in VG+ condition for both the record and the cover. The seller’s description made it seem as if he undergraded the condition, but, as a bidder, I would trust the actual grade over the description. So, if you trust the grading, the VG+ promo copy of Waltz for Debby was a $1,025 record.

Duke Pearson, Profile, Blue Note 4022. This looked to be an original pressing with the West 63rd address, deep grooves, ears, Van Gelder. The record and the cover both appeared to be in VG++ condition. The final price was $366. Given what we’ve seen in the market lately, does that seem a little low.

e-Baying, One More Time

We don’t usually harp on the sales from one seller for so long, perhaps with the exception of the Jazz Record Center, but those auctions from the seller zero.street were quite enlightening, so let’s keep the discussion going. Among these, what were the biggest surprises:

Sam Rivers, Fuschia Swing Song, Blue Note 4184. This was an original mono New York USA pressing with the ear in the deadwax. The record was in M- condition and the cover was probably VG++. The price was $711.01.

Duke Pearson, Profile, Blue Note 4022. This was the one WITHOUT the deep grooves or the ear in the deadwax. It was not an original pressing, probably a Liberty pressing that used the old West 63rd labels. It was in M- condition for both the record and the cover. It sold for $777.45.

Dave Brubeck Quartet, Time Out, Columbia 1397. This was an original mono pressing with the 6-eye label. It was in M- condition for the record and VG++ for the cover. It sold for $305.

Andrew Hill, Black Fire, Blue Note 4151. This was an original mono pressing that did have the ear in the deadwax. It was in M- condition for the record and VG++ for the cover. It sold for $461.78.

Tracking Later Blue Note Pressings From the ’60s

As noted in the comments on the previous post, the seller of the questionable Duke Pearson LP has a large number of jazz vinyl listings closing this weekend. In watching the auctions, I’m noting a surging interest in a lot of later Blue Notes, such as these:

Bobby Hutcherson, Components, Blue Note 4213. This looks to be an original mono pressing with the NY USA label. It looks to be in M- condition for the record and VG++ for the cover. The price is in the $150 range with more than a day left before the auction closes.

Andrew Hill, Compulsion, Blue Note 4217. This also looks to be an original mono pressing in similar condition as the Hutcherson LP, M- for the vinyl and VG++ for the cover. The bidding on this one is also in the $150 range.

Sam Rivers, A New Conception, Blue Note 4249. This is an original Liberty pressing. It is in VG++ condition. The price is more than $100.

And Starting 2013 With Jazz Vinyl

Happy New Year, all. Hope you get all the vinyl of your dreams this year. We start the year watching eBay, as we are wont to do. It actually seems kind of slow to us, probably not unexpected at this time of year. We’re not seeing a lot of action on the auction from the Jazz Record Center and there’s not the usual frenzy over some items you would expect. But there’s still plenty to watch, starting with: Duke Pearson, Profile, Blue Note 4022. This record looks to be in M- condition for the record and the cover,  and it has already been bid up to $273 with 14 bids. Quite impressive with five days left in the auction. More impressive still when you look at the questions below and realize it has neither deep grooves nor the ear in the deadwax.

Curtis Fuller, The Opener, Blue Note 1567. This is an original pressing that looks to be in VG++ condition for the vinyl and VG or VG+ for the cover. This one has the ear, has the deep grooves, yet, unlike the Pearson LP, it doesn’t have any bids. Start price is around $300. There are five days left. It will sell.
