Updating the $1,000 Bin: Griffin, Bird, Dolphy

Doesn’t look as if things on eBay slowed down during the Christmas weekend. Here are a few of the items we’ve been watching:

Johnny Griffin, The Congregation, Blue Note 1580. This was an original pressing with the West 63rd Street address and the cover illustration by Andy Warhol. It was listed in M- condition by a very reliable seller. The price was $1,875. The same seller also sold: Here Comes Louis Smith, Blue Note 1584. This also looked to be in nice M- condition for both the record and the cover. It sold for $1,275.

While we’re updating the $1,000 bin, here’s this one:

Charlie Parker, Quintet and Sextet, Dial 201. This was an original 10-inch pressing. The seller listed the vinyl as M- and the cover as VG++. The price was $1,035.

And how about this one for the $1,000 bin: Eric Dolphy, Out To Lunch, Blue Note, 4163. This was listed as around VG++ condition, with quite a lot of hyperbole from the seller Bobdjukic, who seems to have quite an ability to get his records bid to seemingly astronomic heights. We’ve tracked this previously in the Jazz Collector Price Guide. The previous top price was $330. Want to guess what this copy sold for? How about $1,524. Amazing. We were watching some of this seller’s other auctions, and we will provide another update later.

  • $1,524 blows me away. I have been looking at some of his other auctions and he does have a quite liberal use of the phrases “NM” “Mega-Rare”, never before seen on the planet, etc.

Top dollar no doubt. Good for him.

  • $1524 is unbelievable… especially for a copy that’s far from the best I’ve seen on ebay. Reputable dealers (like euclid and jazzrecordcentre) are often able to get top dollar for their items… but this one goes far beyond that!

  • “..and what do YOU want for Xmas, young man?”
“Santa, can I have enough money so I can buy a bunch of rare Blue Notes on Ebay, regardless of price? I’ve been really good this year, too!”
“Kid,if you think even SANTA can afford that kind of bread,I want some of what you’ve been smokin’-now try to have a jazz-filled new year,and-”
    ‘Yes,Santa?”
“Please get the hell off of my lap..you’re KILLING me!”
