A Few For the Jazz Collector Price Guide
Let’s catch up on some of the earlier jazz vinyl auctions we were watching on eBay, starting with Hank Mobley All Stars, Blue Note 1544. This was an original pressing with the New York 23 labels and deep grooves. The record was listed in probably VG++ condition and the cover was probably VG++ as well, with a small cut-out hole, which you don’t often see on Blue Notes of this vintage. The record wound up selling for $1,009.
Sonny Clark, Leapin’ and Lopin’, Blue Note 4091. This was an original New York USA mono pressing in VG++ condition for both the record and the cover. It sold for $567, which is the highest price we’ve recorded for this record in the Jazz Collector Price Guide.
Art Taylor, Taylor’s Tenors, New Jazz 8219. This was an original purple label pressing in M- condition for the record and VG++ for the cover. It sold for $394.Sonny Rollins Plays, Period 1204. This was an original pressing in VG++ condition for the record and the cover. It sold for $576.50.
Had my eye out for the Sonny Rollins one and the Sonny Clark and Hank Mobley ones. Bit too high for me atm but someday.
The Mobley 1544 didn’t have the frame cover as far as I can see.
moreover it is presented with the later inner sleeve, instead of the original plain one.
Was 1544 ever issued with a frame cover? I thought 1543 was the last Lex, and therefore the last frame cover as well. Or, perhaps the better question is: were any 1544s sold WITH the frame cover, and does that make them “first?”

That inner sleeve would date from 1963, would it not? Perhaps the owner just substituted in a Blue Note inner, because otherwise the label looks like the first pressing to me. Although, interestingly, the seller did not advertise it as “original.”
1544 should have a frame cover to be a 1st. As well as 1545 which is the last with a frame cover.
Joe L: my 1544 and 1545 have frame covers and thus should be considered to be first, according to Fredrik.
