Autographed Jazz LPs, and Not Autographed Jazz LPs

We’re watching some rare jazz vinyl on the current auction from The Jazz Record Center, starting with Duke Ellington & John Coltrane, Impulse A-30. This is an original promo mono copy with the white label. The record and the cover both look to be in mint or near mint condition. The start price is $200 and so far there are no bidders with two days left in the auction. Also, Charlie Rouse, Yeah!, Epic 16012. This is an original pressing with the yellow label and also looks to be in mint or near mint condition. The start price for this one is $300 and so far there is one bid. One more: Horace Parlan, Movin’ and Groovin’, Blue Note 4028. This is an original West 63rd Street pressing. The record looks to be M- and the cover maybe a notch below. There are six bids and the current price is in the $275 range.

The Jazz Record Center had another auction a couple of weeks ago that I missed and was mentioned by a commenter on the previous post. I’m actually sorry I missed that one because it was loaded with autographs. Here are a couple of examples, most prominently Billie Holiday At Jazz at the Philharmonic, Clef 169. This is the 10-inch LP with the infamous “Billy” Holiday on the David Stone Martin cover. It is supposedly signed by Billie and, because it is the Jazz Record Center, I would be confident that they would have done their research. The final price was $852.99. To me, if the signature was truly authenticated, I would put the value on this as “priceless” and I would have treasured it forever. Not to mention it is a great album and amazing cover. But, alas, I wasn’t paying attention.

How about a signed Chet Baker EP: Chet Baker Plays the Compositions of Russ Freeman, Pacific Jazz EP4-8. Typically I would have no interest in EPs, although I do own quite a few, but this was potentially signed by Chet. It sold for $330.

Then there was Walter Davis. Jr., Davis Cup, Blue Note 4018. This was also signed and was an original West 63rd Street pressing. The listing describes it as having some surface noise, but the indication seemed to be that this may have been common to all or most original pressings of Davis Cup. The cover was probably VG++. The record was signed, “To Jose, Walter Davis piano, ’77.”

When I look at the condition of the record, the reputation of the seller, the provenance — i.e., it is an original pressing – it seems to me that the presence of the signature actually detracted from the value and from the final selling price. Do you agree? Do we have a sense why a rare, Blue Note with the artist’s signature in pen, would actually be worth less than a copy without the autograph?

I will share one bit of personal experience that gives me somewhat of a sense why that may be. A couple of years ago, you may recall, Herbie Hancock was doing a book tour and was right in my neighborhood. I popped by and had him sign my copies of Maiden Voyage and Takin’ Off. As soon as I saw he was signing it in black marker I had immediate regrets. I should have brought a ball point pen, I remember thinking. But it was too late, he had marker in hand and was scribbling away at the top of my precious albums. The results are below. I should have just had him sign the book I had just purchased instead. Normally I would much prefer a personally signed record, but there’s something about that big marker that turns me off. Maybe it’s just me.

  • …Let me start by saying I have the upmost respect for Fred and the JRC. However, in all honesty there have been a few signed pieces that he’s had up for auction over the years that were obvious forgeries. One in particular was a highly questionable John Coltrane signature on an autograph page which he and I went back and forth on during the auction. At the end of the day, he is careful not to imply that the signatures are in anyway authentic, and leaves it up to the buyer to make their own decision on that aspect.

As for the recent auction of that Billie Holiday At Jazz at the Philharmonic, Clef 169. I have been studying and collecting Billie Holiday’s signatures for well over a decade. Lady Day, Ella and Frank are among my favorite vocalists and among the artists I collect most. At first glance this one is somewhat passable, but upon a closer inspection there were enough issues and inconsistencies that I had my doubts on it once again… I really wanted this one to be real, as I would have seriously considered dropping a mortgage payment or two on it myself. At the end of the day, some key markers in her signature just weren’t there on this one, and the scale and rotation were questionable for me as well even if it had been possibly signed on the fly from the stage door.

The good news is that those Herbie Hancock signatures are spot on Al ! 🙂 Heh heh. (Hope you got a photo with him as well…) The marker isn’t bad, it might look odd with a pen unless he personalized it for you… Especially at that scale. At least the back cover slick on this one is more of a matte finish. I had him sign a few backstage for me over the years and opted for a risky front cover signature instead. He did Maiden Voyage with a black industrial sharpie, and it still looks great hanging behind offset UV rated glass here in my office. The cover slick on this one seems a bit more porous for some reason so it held up quite well. A few years ago, he signed the cover of Empyrean Isles for me with a silver paint marker… That one worked out nicely too, and it had plenty of time to dry so it will also make a great display piece that won’t easily fade.

  • …Almost forgot to mention the Chet Baker autograph. That one looks authentic, but I always feel a bit cheated when an artist only sign’s their first name on something. Ornette did that on one of his albums for me, but only because he ran out of space after personalizing it first. (Ornette was just about one of the sweetest gents you’d ever expect to meet by the way, and I would never hold it against him. ) However, some artists just do things that will grind your gears for whatever reason: Case in point, Holly Cole just signed “Merry Christmas” on a copy of “Baby It’s Cold Outside” and no signature whatsoever… To this day I’ve never forgiven her for it ! (Bah humbug…;))

  • Herbie Hancock signed my copy of Maiden Voyage in the same place with the same kind of marker (on the same book tour!) and I think it’s fantastic.

  • Have a couple autographs from Steve Lacy — one reads “Clifford Good Luck Steve Lacy 2000” on School Days, which I always felt was prophetic. I bought a copy of Ornette’s Golden Circle Vol. 1 online around the same time and it arrived with Ornette’s signature on the back, on the shrink. Wasn’t noted or verified at the time… also have Richard Abrams’ signature on the Daddy-O MJT album, from before he was Muhal.

  • I notice something interesting on your two Herbie signatures that I think illustrates how authenticating can be such tricky business. You got those two sigs in person, at the same time. Now if you look at the capital “H” in Hancock, the top sig in your photo has a “hook” or loop that goes to the left and then curls under. On that same “H” in the signature beneath it, the “hook” goes off to the right and is a straight line. Also the “k” in “Hancock” has a more pronounced loop in the top sig. Far less a concern, but still. Simply pointing out that even 100% legit signatures can have subtle differences, right?

So consider looking at a 70-year-old Billie Holiday signature. Who knows when and how it was obtained. It could have been after a long hot gig when she’d had a few drinks (or something more!), which could account for a lot. Or, she might simply have made a change to how she signed her name 10 years earlier. Or, it could not be real at all!

All that is to say that, with some exceptions, unless you get a signature yourself in person, can you ever really know if it’s 100% legit or not? If you want to believe it is, and have the money to spend, just go for it.

  • I’m particularly interested in these comments, and – as the aforementioned Ornette Coleman stepdaughter who sold all his and my mother’s record collections to Al – would wish to proudly share my AUTOGRAPHED EDITION with anyone who’d like to see them.

In the high-end of art photography, this collection is referred to as “ORIGINAL VINTAGE SILVER GELATIN PRINTS, MADE BY THE PHOTOGRAPHER WITHIN ONE YEAR OF EXPOSURE”.

Miles, Mulligan, Basie, Gil Evens, Mal Waldron, Gato are just a few in this list – request a copy:

  • I’m considering a bid on “Vito Price” Argo LP in the current JRC Auction. However, I think the staple holes in the upper-left hand corner of the cover should be mentioned in the description.

  • The JRC auction ended with some record highs on the Duke Ellington & John Coltrane, Charlie Rouse and Ike Quebec records

  • First, I sincerely hope everyone is doing well . O.K. here we go. WOW ! Charlie Rouse $1700. + what the heck is going on ? I am at a loss trying to rap my head around this one. I don’t see this album meeting any of the criteria that make it this valuable in the realm of jazz collector guidelines. I have owned this record for over 40 years and love it. What makes this l.p. So valuable ? Any thoughts ?Is this a start of a new trend ? Any answers would be greatly appreciated.

  • On the other hand there were some painfully low prices, for example the Hal McKusick and and Horace Parlan titles. The Dave Bailey price was absurdly high, as were the Ellington and Rouse.
    Conclusions: uninformed buyers, impulse bidding.

  • Oliver Nelson’s “Screamin’ the Blues” is one of the more common New Jazz titles. Crazy to see someone paying for it as much as for the Parlan…

On a different note, seeing the Cavril Payne record reminded me that I used to have it. I am saying “used to” because I have not seen it for a very long time, 10+ years at least. What happened to it? Don’t we all ask ourselves this question one in a while?

  • Love me that Vito Price lp, glad I kept it, gladder that I paid a buck or so for it 50 some years ago.
Likewise on the Charlie Rouse ‘Yeah.’
Art, to me these two also are $1000.00 dollar records, referring to your query on Al’s previous column, “Catching Up(And we mean up).” Looks like some one made it a reality on the Rouse lp.

  • 1775 $ for Charlie Rouse’s “Yeah”… I bought same condition copy for 200 $ 20 years ago and thought i overpaid…

  • Definitely obnoxious pricing on the Rouse, Quebec, and Coltrane… and I still don’t get why Alabama Feeling, as great as it is, is now nearly breaking the $1000 bin, sealed or not.

  • The Doyle is a cool record, rare, and hard to find clean. That said, Fred will get more for a jazz record than any of his competitors, at this point. With the possible exception of Bob D.

There are a number of free jazz records that bring considerably more dollars at auction.
