Four For Blue Note

Random Blue Note jazz vinyl from our eBay watch list, starting with Herbie Hancock, Empyrean Isles, Blue Note 4175. This is an original mono pressing listed in M- condition for the record and cover. Seller rates it a ten on a scale of one to ten, for whatever that is worth. I had this in my queue and a reader sent me a link and it has 70 watchers, so it is, at the very least, a widely viewed listing that closes within a couple of hours of when I post this. The bidding is already more than $900 and at that price it will set a new high for this record, according to Popsike, but we are fully expecting that this copy will break into the $1,000 bin.

Horace Silver Quintet, Blue Note 5062. This is an original 10-inch Lexington Avenue pressing, featuring Kenny Dorham, Hank Mobley, Doug Watkins and Art Blakey. Pretty good band, I would say. This is listed in VG condition for the record and the cover. The start price is around $200 and so far there are no bidders with a day left on the auction.

Here are a couple of United Artists Blue Notes: Cliff Jordan, Blue Note 1565 and Paul Chambers Quintet, Blue Note 1564. These are both listed in M- or VG++ condition and they both have a start price of about $100. The auctions close in six days and it will be interesting to see the going rate for these 1970s issues. They’ve certainly been going way up over the past few years and these are nice copies in nice condition. Any guesses?

  • $300 a pop on the UAs is my guess. Maybe more on the Chambers.

  • It’s rare to see the UA Blue Notes without a cut corner.

For what it’s worth, I bought an original copy of Moncur’s “Some Other Stuff” from the seller of the Hancock many years ago. It was also rated 10 out of 10, and it truly is perfectly Mint in every way. Got a few other things since then. I trust them. Of course, back then, I got a decent deal. That is a crazy final price, but if it is in the condition my record was in, the buyer will be very pleased.

  • As we comment here often, seems an odd choice that the Herbie seller only provides three pictures, and doesn’t even show the full front or back cover. The buyer is trusting the seller that it is indeed 10/10 all around for $1500.

  • Just bought it…for some reason, Horace silver 1st press mono Blue Notes are surprisingly affordable…

  • For what it’s worth, 4175 comes in two other flavors, dg – s1 & s2. Spoke to Fred about it, example photos are now up with new discogs entries.
