New Jazz Record Center Auction Could Be Big

Got an email from the Jazz Record Center and they have an auction closing in a couple of days and it could be a doozy. Here’s one of the items we’ll be watching closely, to see if it perhaps sets a new record for Jazz Collector: Hank Mobley, Blue Note 1568. This is an original pressing and it’s in M- condition: In fact, it’s listed as “near new.” The combination of one of the rarest records, a Blue Note at that, and the most trusted seller, is definitely worth watching. So far, the record has a start price of $2,500 and there are no bidders.

Here are a couple more we’ll be watching from the same auction:

Dexter Gordon, Dexter Blows Hot and Cool, Dootone 209. This is an original red vinyl pressing. The record is in M- condition and the cover seems to have been repaired, but is also listed as very clean. This one has a start price of

$1,500 and, with less than two days to go, there are still no bidders.

We’ll also keep track of: Hank Mobley, Hank, Blue Note 1560. This is an original pressing in M- condition for the record and the cover. The start price is $1,200 and still no bidders.

So three rare records, each with no bidders yet. I bet they all sell, and I bet they all sell for more than $2,000. Any takers?

  • I’ll take a piece of that action. I think the Hank Mobley/1568 will sell for around $3,000. But I don’t think either the Dexter Gordon or Hank Mobley/1560 will break $2,000.

  • ai,ai,ai… it sold for $ 5.10100, would it be because it was almost a Mint coppy? …or did two people get verry irational??

it’s been asked manny times, but there was never a answer i believe, so once again: Does somebody know how manny where made in the first pressing?

  • I believe the Hank Mobley 1568 LP was only pressed in a first run of approx. 500 (+/-) according to most experts I’ve asked… Even still, it’s certainly not worth $5,101… It’s really not even Hanks best work, but ya’ gotta’ love that cover photo !

  • Oh,man-someone LOVES their Mobley(not that I blame them). But to differ with don-lucky:someone also believes it IS worth $5,101 of their money. Like beauty,worth-or is it value?-is in the eye of the beholder. For me,I’m content to enjoy my $20 Japanese pressing, with the classic “fly” cover prominently displayed. Hey-I think I just saved $5,081!

  • if only 500 where pressed then it is almost unbelievable how manny times it shows up at ebay…
i mean, it is a piece of flat vinyl from more then half a century ago, and it is only in the last 10 years it has become expensive…. people must have been verry carrefull with there records in the old days…

For me it is amazing that i can find and buy records (BN, Prestige, Pacific etc) in Amsterdam that where being sold when my parrents where 10 years old!? ..and still in VG++ condition..

I think that these kind of prices ($ 5.000 an up) are being payed by people who have almost ALL the original Blue Notes and are only missing one or two..
mayby THEN it would be worth $ 5.000 for me to?

  • by the way, the guy/woman(?) who bought 1568 also bought the 1560 for $ 2.347… that’s pretty steep, $ 7.500 for 2 mobley blue notes..

  • If I had an extra $5000 or $6000 burning a hole in my pocket, I wouldn’t mind picking this one up myself, sadly I have yet to win a lottery and for most of us this is certainly not pocket change… I don’t know about you guys, but If I spent that kind of cash on an LP my wife would probably kill me ! (Honestly, I would love an original pressing of this one myself ceedee… I am just bitter because the prices have gotten so out of reach. Mark my words, if I ever do win the proverbial lottery one of these days, I will buy up original copies of Hank Mobley 1568 for all my friends here at Jazz Collector !)

  • i agree with you Don, if i had a million in the bank, i would buy one right away… that is , i don’t care about the money… but that is mayby why i DON’T have a million i the bank;-)

  • …As long as we have the music, Jazz Collectors will always be rich in spirit right ! heh heh.

  • je possede un blue note de Ike Quebec album no102, les 3 disques en bon état belle pochette avec les nos 510,515,516. faire offre si intérêt. Merci

  • Hi, I’m a big collector of Jazz, but I’ve yet to find an album that I would pay THAT money for. I once bought a live broadcast which had the band (I forget which one now) play while the audience were desperately trying to find a doctor for a guy who was having a heart attack in the audience. I sold it for a couple of hundred, but not for the jazz content … just the backing track 😉

    All the best

    Col 🙂
