Outward Bound, I Wish I Was

Today we have some random jazz vinyl we are watching on eBay, starting with a pair of Dolphy New Jazz LPs: Eric Dolphy, Outward Bound, New Jazz 8236. This looks to be an original purple label pressing with the deep grooves. The record is in VG condition and the cover is VG+. The auction closes in a few hours from when I am posting this, with a start price of about $300 and no bidders. The seller does mention “surface sound” during some soft passages, so that may be scaring away potential bidders. Great album with a great cover. The same seller has Eric Dolphy, Out There, New Jazz 8252. This also looks to be a deep groove purple label original. Same condition as the other, VG with surface sound for the record and VG+ for the cover. This one has bids and is currently in the $200 range.

Here’s one we mentioned on our previous post: Gil Melle, Gil’s Guests, Prestige 7063. This is an original New York yellow label pressing in M- condition for the record and VG++ for the cover. Seller claims the record has never been played. No comment. In any case, the bidding is in the $130 range and the auction closes later today. Wonder if it will beat the previous top price of $381. After all, it’s never been played. What do you do if you win it? Do you never play it so that you can say it’s never been played? Quite a conundrum, IMHO.

I still keep an eye out for Freddie Redd, Shades of Redd, Blue Note 4045 and here’s a beautiful near mint copy being offered by our old friend Rudolf. This one is already in the range of $1,350 with about a day left on the auction. As of now, Shades of Redd has not cracked the $2,000 barrier, according to Popsike, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it were to happen tomorrow. On eBay now there is also a copy of Freddie Redd, The Connection, Blue Note 4027. This looks to be an original deep groove West 63rd Street pressing, listed in M- condition for both the record and the cover. The bidding is in the $90 range with more than two days left on the auction and we would expect the final price to be quite a bid higher.

  • Why would anyone buy a record they never intended to play?
To me a record is only valuable when you release the (hopefully) beautiful music from the grooves!

  • This copy has the magic words “Unplayed archive copy.” Wild guess final price prediction: $2,956.73

  • The Shades of Redd, will go for over $ 2000, based on the fact it’s in great condition and from a well known seller who grades very well.

  • $3,551!

  • When I started collecting jazz vinyl I knew nada about BLP 4045, knew some name on it 😉 Traded it for a stones album worth about $20. Original in EX shape. Best trade ever. This was about 25years ago.

  • Charlie, now tell us the story that offsets that one! Tell us about the greatest vinyl deal of your life! 🙂 Collecting is filled with both types of stories.

  • Sure Daryl, will post when I have time. Take care all
