More Jazz Vinyl: Monk 10-Inch & A Few Bargains?

Here’s some jazz vinyl we’ve been watching on eBay:

Look at the great cover on this one: Thelonious Monk Plays, Prestige 189. This is a 10-inch pressing that was listed in M- condition for the vinyl and VG+ for the cover. It was part of a nice crop of 10-inch Prestiges offered by the Philadelphia Record Exchange and it sold for $295. You may recall that I bid on the James Moody 10-inchers from this auction. I wound up winning all three for about $150 total, about $50 each. To me that’s a fine deal, great music, even though, perhaps, the resale market for these records won’t be so great. Won’t matter though, since I’ll have thousands of records to sell before I get to these.

Some interesting, lower, prices than usual: Sonny Rollins, Tenor Madness Prestige 7047. This was an original New York pressing in VG condition for both the record and cover. This is quite a classic, of course, yet it sold for less than $60. The dealer mentioned something about the cover being “professionally” repaired, whatever that means, so that could have impacted the price. Still, even in VG condition, you’d expect more, based on the prices we’ve seen lately for original Blue Notes and Prestiges. Here’s another:

Moody’s Mood Is A Sad One For Jazz Lovers

Philadelphia Record Exchange had a bunch of nice 10-inch Prestige LPs up this week and someone sent me a link. I took a look and there were several nice James Moody records that looked to be in nice condition and were not getting much action. I’ve never quite understood why the Moody Prestiges and Blue Notes never have much cachet among collectors, but the reality is they don’t. So I bid on the first two that came up and I won them both, under a nom de plume you may not recognize, and I’m hoping to win the third. The prices, in my view, were quite fair. I shared my good fortune with a friend, who sent me a link to this article: Jazz legend James Moody battling cancer. Sounds like we will soon be losing another great one and one of the last remaining links to the dawn of the bebop era.

Tracking Four For the $1,000 Bin

Here is some jazz vinyl we are watching now on eBay that we expect will end up in the proverbial $1,000 bin:

Kenny Dorham, Quiet Kenny, New Jazz 8225. This is an original pressing with the deep grooves and purple label and it is a promo copy as well. The seller has it listed in VG++ condition for both the record and the cover and the bidding is already more than $700 with five days to go. This will end up in the $2,000 bin, won’t it?

This one may end up there as well: Dexter Gordon, Dexter Blows Hot and Cool, Dootone 207. This is an original pressing with the red vinyl. The record is VG+ and the cover is VG++. This one is around $200 and there are still five days of bidding.

Back on eBay: Lee, Bird, Newk and Mr. PC

It’s been days since we caught up on eBay, so let’s take a look and see what’s been going on:

There was this one that came close to the $1,000 bin: Lee Morgan Sextet, Blue Note 1541. This was an original Lexington Avenue pressing that was listed in VG++ condition for the vinyl and VG+ for the cover. It sold for $919.

We were also watching a bunch of records from the seller bobjdukic, which is always an interesting pastime. In a way you have to admire his ability to promote a 1978 Savoy reissue of Charlie Parker as an original and get someone to pay a fairly decent collectible price. Case in point: Charlie Parker, The Complete Savoy Studio Sessions, a boxed set issued in 1978 by Arista Records. This sold for $112.50. This one seemed to get a fair price: Sonny Rollins With the Modern Jazz Quartet, Prestige 7029. This was a New York pressing with the yellow cover. Jenkins, Trane, KD and A New High For Wes

Here’s some more jazz vinyl worth noting:

This one is for the $1,000 bin: John Jenkins with Kenny Burrell, Blue Note 1573. This was an original West 63rd deep groove pressing that was in M- condition for the vinyl and VG++ for the cover. The price was $1,125.

This one certainly got top dollar, close to the $1,000 bin: Kenny Dorham, Whistle Stop, Blue Note 4063. This was an original pressing that looked to be in VG++ condition for the record and VG+ for the cover. The price was $989.

John Coltrane, Coltrane, Prestige 7105. This was an original yellow label New York pressing. The record was in VG++ condition and the cover VG+. The price was $965.

More Jazz Vinyl: Byrd, Trane, Book, Jackie

I spent some time yesterday putting some new items in the Jazz Collector Price Guide and came across a few odds and ends worth sharing.

This is yet another Blue Note that has hit a new high price in the past few weeks, at least as far as we can tell: Donald Byrd, Byrd in Hand, Blue Note 4019. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing and it was listed in M- condition for the vinyl and probably VG++ for the cover. It had a nice picture, as you can see. The price was $637, which was not only a high for this record, but a high for any Donald Byrd Blue Note for the Jazz Collector Price Guide. This follows recent high prices for Wayne Shorter and Ike Quebec on Blue Note as well.

This one was getting a little bidding action and I’m not sure why, although it is certainly an excellent record: John Coltrane, Ole, Atlantic 1373. This seemed to be a routine pressing with the purple and orange label. With Atlantics of this vintage, I’m not sure how to tell if it’s an original, other than the heaviness of the vinyl and cover. Perhaps someone out there has some more information. Anyway this was in M- condition for the record and cover and it sold for $53.01.

Jazz Vinyl This Week: A New High For Shorter

Here is some of the jazz vinyl we’ve been watching this week on eBay:

Wayne Shorter, JuJu, Blue Note 4182. This was an original New York USA mono pressing in M- condition for both the record and the cover. The price was $537. This is the highest price we’ve ever recorded for this record in the Jazz Collector Price Guide and is, in fact, the highest price we’ve ever recorded for any Wayne Shorter album.

This one was from the same seller: Kenny Burrell, Blue Lights Volume 2, Blue Note 1597. This is one of the ones with the Andy Warhol cover. This was not an original pressing — at least not a first pressing — because it had the New York USA labels as opposed to the West 63rd Street labels. We’ve been watching a lot of second and third presses lately, particularly the Blue Notes, because we’ve seen a pretty strong uptick in prices. This one sold for $179.50 in M- condition for both the record and the cover.

Jazz Vinyl On eBay: Mobley, JJ, Trane

What, pray tell, is on the Jazz Collector watch list this week? Glad you asked.

The seller Bullsite2000 from Italy has another fine batch of records on eBay, including: Hank Mobley, Soul Station, Blue Note 4031. This looks to be an original West 63rd Street pressing and it looks to be n beautiful M- condition. The seller is quite reputable, so we see no reason why this one won’t join its many brothers in the $1,000 bin when it closes tomorrow. The current price is a bit more than $600. Here’s another from the same seller: Hank Mobley With Donald Byrd and Lee Morgan, Blue Note 1540. This is an original Lexington Avenue pressing with the flat edge, deep grooves, etc. It’s in beautiful condition with equally beautiful pictures. The current price is more than $800 and it has not yet reached the seller’s reserve. Would anyone be surprised if this one

On Ebay: Lou, Lou & Some Wailers

Here is some of the jazz vinyl we’ve been watching this weekend:

Lou Donaldson, Quartet, Quintet, Sextet, Blue Note 1537. This was an original Lexington Avenue flat-edge pressing. It was listed in M- condition for both the record and the cover. The price was $1,008.80. Rudolph asks if perhaps there is a slowdown. We have seen this sell for more than $1,800 recently, so who knows. I find so much of what happens on eBay arbitrary: Depends who’s looking that week, how competitive the bidding gets, how the record is listed, who does the listing, etc. Here’s another Donaldson: Lou Takes Off, Blue Note 1591. A Few For the $1,000 Bin, Happy B-Day Newk

Ahhh, it’s nice to be back posting regularly again. We haven’t updated the $1,000 bin in a while, so let’s do that this morning, starting with: Lee Morgan, Indeed, Blue Note 1538. This looks to be an original pressing with the deep grooves and Lexington Avenue address. Although there is no mention of a flat edge in the listing, the seller confirmed that it is, Indeed (pun intended), a flat-edge pressing. The record was listed in M- condition and the cover was described as “very good” but it sounded more liked VG+ or even VG++ based on the description. This beauty sold for $1,925. Since we’re doing the $1,000 bin this morning, it must be a Blue Note day here at Jazz Collector. Here’s another:
