With all of the action the past few days, we’ve reached somewhat of a milestone here at Jazz Collector. According to the statistics compiled by WordPress, yesterday we went over 2 million page views since we began tracking such things back in the fall of 2008. Our first month we had 296 page views and last month we had about 40,000.We are now averaging more than 1,350 page views every day. In all we’ve had 1,557 total posts, of which I have written all but seven (although, to be fair, we’ve had several guest columns in which I have been the poster, but it’s been someone else’s words). Anyway, I feel pretty good about all this, how we’ve been able to build the community organically all these years and how we’ve been able to keep the site independent and fun and still just a hobby. No plans for any major changes from my end.

Now, back to jazz vinyl. I see that our friends at the Jazz Record Center have a new auction with a few nice items, including:

Benny Golson, Gone With Golson, New Jazz 8235. This is an original pressing with the purple label and the deep grooves. The record is in M- condition and the cover looks to be about VG++. The starting price is $100 and so far there are no bids.

I’ve never figured out why this record isn’t valued more highly: Cannonball Adderley Quintet in Chicago, Mercury 20449. This is an original deep groove pressing that looks to be in M- condition for the record and probably M- for the cover as well. The start price is just $30 and so far there are no bids. This is such a great record and it features John Coltrane. If it were on Blue Note, what would the value be? Somewhere in the $1,000 bin? I’d say so. We’ve seen this record sell for as much as $150 in the past, but it’s more typically in the $40 to $60 range. And it is certainly well worth the price.
The post Milestones and More first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

Today let’s start with Introducing Lee Morgan, Savoy 12091. This is an original pressing with the red label. All in all it looks to be in M- condition for both the record and the cover. We’ve seen this record sell for more than $500 previous in the Jazz Collector Price Guide and it looks like this copy will set a new high point. The bidding is already more than $560 and there are still four more days left on the auction. This seller often has nice items and his listings wind up making our posts fairly frequently, although we’ve never dealt with him directly. Here’s another one of his nice records on eBay this week:

Donald Byrd, Byrd Blows on Beacon Hill, Transition 17. This is an original pressing with the booklet. Everything looks to be in close to M or M- condition about this record. Even the labels are still attached, which is either a miracle or a fix, if you know anything about Transitions. The bidding on this is already at about $1,000 and we’ll expect the final price to be quite a bit higher.

Here’s another seller from Europe with some really nice jazz vinyl on eBay this week, including Sonny Clark, Dial “S” For Sonny, Blue Note 1570. This looks to be an original pressing with the West 63rd Street address. The record looks to be in VG+ or better condition and the cover is M-. The bidding is in the $230 range with more than three days to go, so we’d expect the price to be much higher at the end, probably into the $1,000 bin?

John Coltrane, Coltrane, Impulse 21. This was a mono pressing with the white label promo label. It was listed in VG++ condition for the record and VG+ for the cover. It wound up selling for $493.88. Wow. From the same seller was this: John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman, Impulse 40. This was also a white label promo copy, also in VG++ condition for the record and VG+ for the cover. This one sold for $282. Then there were the two on Prestige: George Wallington, Jazz For the Carriage Trade, Prestige 7032. This was an original New York yellow-label pressing with the “Not for Sale” stamps on the label and cover. It was listed in M- condition for the record and probably VG++ for the cover. The start price was $499 and it did not sell. Somewhat surprising, right? Then there was:

Barbara Lea with the Johnny Windhurst Quartet, Prestige 7065. This was also an original New York yellow label pressing with the “Nor for Sale” stickers. It was listed in M- condition for the record and VG++ for the cover. The start price was $299 and that was exactly what it sold for with a single bidder.

Here are a few more odds and ends to share:

Our friend CeeDee sent me a note under the subject: “From the ‘I’ll see it when I believe it” department.” It was this link to Somethin’ Else, the Blue Note book by Ashley Kahn that has been in the works for several years. The note further states: “Ships on Jan. 30, it says here.” So, apparently, the long-awaited book will be available by the end of this week. I’ll see if I can get a review copy to cover here at Jazz Collector.

Here’s a very interesting read from Politico, excerpted from a book called “Chasing the Scream: The First and Last Days of the War on Drugs,” by Johann Hari: “The Hunting of Billie Holiday: How Lady Day found herself in the middle of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics’ early fight for survival.” Take a few minutes to read this. It’s quite chilling.

Finally, I got a chance yesterday to see the Clark Terry documentary, “Keep on Keepin’ On.” I will write more about this in a subsequent post. Until then, whatever you do, make it your business to see this movie. If you’re a regular here at this site you will absolutely love this movie. I promise.

Today we have a couple of updates for the $1,000 jazz vinyl bin and a bit more on promos, including the WLPs (white label promos) that are apparently a common term that is new to me after 45 years of collecting. First, for the $1,000 bin there is Eric Dolphy In Europe, Debut 136. This is the original Danish pressing and the record and cover both looked to be in M- condition. The record sold for $1,026.

This one is left over from New Year’s, but CeeDee had sent it to me and I had forgotten to post it: Hank Mobley, Soul Station, Blue Note 4031. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing listed in Ex condition, which sounds like VG++ based on the grading system we use here at Jazz Collector. It sold for $1,605. I happened to be perusing my collection late last night and came upon this record and almost forgotten that I had it: Almost, but not quite. I’ve only had it for a little more than a year, since the Baltimore score of a lifetime. I think I will listen to it later today.

Back on the promo front there was this:

Miles Davis, Kind of Blue, Columbia 8163. This was a stereo white label promo and, there it is right in the headlines, the WLP initials. This was sold by Euclid Records. The record was listed in VG++ condition and the cover was listed as VG+. But if you look at the picture that seems to be an awful lot of ring wear for VG+. Again, Euclid is one of the trustworthy sellers on eBay, but I would have been really cautious about that one. It sold for $202.50.

Here’s a promo that’s not getting any interest yet: Gigi Gryce, The Hap’Nins, New Jazz 8246. This has the “Preview Copy” stamp. The record is listed in VG++ condition and the cover is VG+. The start price is about $100 and so far there are no takers. The auction closes in about six hours from this writing.

You may recall this was the record with the inner seal and signed by Miles, Hank Mobley, Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, Jimmy Cobb and JJ. Johnson. When we first looked at this record there was one day left in the auction and the bidding was in the $300 range. The record wound up selling for a whopping $2,091.75.

Here are a few from the recent Jazz Record Center auction, starting with Red Rodney, 1957, Signal 1206. This was an original pressing listed in M- for the cover and probably VG++ for the record. We were commenting that there was no action in the auction but, of course, there was quite a bit at the end. The record wound up selling for $1,324.50. Thelonious Monk, Monk, Columbia 2291. This would not normally appear on a list of collectible records, but this was a promo copy with the white labels. The record was in M- condition and the cover was VG++. It sold for $114.37. From the same auction there were also . . .

Wayne Shorter, JuJu, Blue Note 4182. This was an original mono pressing that looked to be in M- condition for the record and the cover. It sold for $460. Wayne Shorter, Night Dreamer, Blue Note 4173. This was also an original mono New York USA pressing. The record looked to be M- and the cover was probably VG++. This one sold for $361. Art Taylor, AT’s Delight, Blue Note 4047. This was an original deep-groove West 63rd Street pressing in M- condition for the record and the cover. It sold for $458.89, a relative bargain IMHO. Bennie Green, Back on the Scene, Blue Note 1587. In our earlier listing we described this as pristine for the record and cover, which translates into M-. This one sold for $666. It seemed at the time of my earlier post that $500 or less was a possibility, but there were late bidders. Still, $666 looks like another relative bargain.

Or not. Here are some of them:

Kenny Dorham and the Jazz Prophets Volume 1, ABC Paramount 122. This was an original pressing listed in VG++ condition for the record and M- for the cover. It sold for $510. One of the things I’ve always liked about this record is the “Volume 1.” Obviously, somebody thought there was going to be a Volume 2, but it never materialized. Wonder if anyone here knows what happened to Volume 2? I searched for this record for years. About 20 years ago I passed up a very nice copy at the Jazz Record Center, which Fred Cohen very generously agreed to sell to me for $100. I have no idea why I didn’t buy it, but I didn’t. I finally acquired a copy last year in that lovely Baltimore collection. Still haven’t listed to it, though. Getting a turntable upgrade in New York this week. Maybe now’s the time.

This one had a starting price of about $1,500 and, not surprisingly (to me, at least), did not attract any bidders:

Eric Dolphy, In Europe, Debut 136. This was an original pressing from Denmark, listed in M- condition for the record and Ex+ for the cover, which is probably just a shade below M-. We have seen this record sell for as much as $1,375 in the Jazz Collector Price Guide, but I think it’s rather presumptuous of the seller, to start at such a high price, rather than allow the bidding to set the market. But, that’s just me. It’s really none of our business how people want to sell their records. Or, in this case, not sell their records.

Stan Getz Quartets, Prestige 7002. This was an original New York yellow label pressing, listed in VG+ condition for both the record and the cover. It sold for #113.50.

Our friend CeeDee, probably wondering where I’ve been hiding, reach out on this listing: John Coltrane, Blue Train, Blue Note 1577. This one is a curiosity. The seller, a very experienced and knowledgeable seller (and, to my recollection, a regular reader of Jazz Collector), chose to list this as an “original” Blue Note. I guess it depends on how you define original, no? It’s not an unoriginal Blue Note, nor is it a first pressing: It has the West 63rd and the New York USA labels. You have to look closely at the pictures to discover that. It was in VG++ condition for the record, perhaps VG++ or M- for the cover. Someone agreed to pay $860. I have to think the winning bidder didn’t look carefully enough at the listings and thought he got a bargain Blue Train original for $860. I imagine there will be no small measure of disappoint when the record arrives and gets unpacked and the reality sinks in. Or, perhaps I am wrong, and this is now the going market record for a second, or third, or whatever pressing of this classic jazz LP. CeeDee’s accompanying note to me was quite succinct: “A lot of bread for this, with mismatched labels. Time to list your doubles?” If I were to list my doubles, I’d probably be a bit more circumspect in the language I would choose.

Time to catch up on the jazz vinyl auctions I was watching on eBay:

Cliff Jordan, Blue Note 1565. This was an original pressing with the New York 23 labels on both sides. Nice. The record was listed in VG++ condition and the cover was VG+. There were 13 bids and it sold for $1,525. In better condition it would certainly have broken the $2,000 barrier, as we have previously seen for this record in the Jazz Collector Price Guide.

This one did make it into the $2,000 bin, with plenty to spare: Tommy Flanagan Overseas, Prestige 7134. This was an original New York yellow label pressing listed in VG++ condition for the record and VG+ for the cover. It sold for $2,314.

Roy Haynes, Cracklin’ with Booker Ervin, New Jazz 8286. This was an original purple label pressing in M- condition for the record and the cover. It sold for $408.33. Anyone find my copy yet? I’m sure if I sold it (which, of course, I still don’t remember), it was not for more than $400.

Ray Bryant Trio, Prestige 7098. This was the one that was described in M- condition for the record and cover but had that super-annoying cutout hole right through the cover and the label. Never mind. It sold for $775.55

Introducing Johnny Griffin, Blue Note 1533. This was an original Lexington Avenue pressing in VG+ condition for the record and VG for the cover. As we are seeing, the prices for records in less than pristine condition seem to be rising, at least if the records are original Blue Notes. This one sold for $710.

Here are a couple of Eric Dolphy records, also in less than pristine condition: Eric Dolphy, Out There, New Jazz 8252. This seemed to be an original purple label pressing listed in VG or VG+ condition for the vinyl and VG+ for the cover.
Not sure how we missed this one, but, to be fair, there’s been quite a large number of copies of this record on eBay lately, particularly one considered to be quite rare: Hank Mobley, Blue Note 1568. This one had the West 63rd Street address on both labels, but not the New York 23. So it is considered rare but less rare, original but less original. This one was probably VG+ for both the record and the cover. It sold for $2,456.

Sonny Rollins Plus Four, Prestige 7038. This looked to be an original New York pressing with the original cover design, although there was no mention of the frame, or kakubishi cover. This one was in VG++ condition for both the record and the cover and it sold for $332. Here’s another Rollins from the same seller: Sonny Rollins, Moving Out, Prestige 7058. This was also an original New York pressing. The record was M- and the cover was just VG. This one sold for $472.

You don’t see this one too often, at least not with the red vinyl:

Marty Paich Quartet With Art Pepper, Tampa 28. This was an original pressing with the red vinyl. The record and cover were in VG+ condition. It sold for $635.

Hank Mobley, Mobley’s Message, Prestige 7061. This was an original pressing listed in M- condition for the record and VG+ for the cover. It sold for $689.

Is this yet another copy of Tommy Flanagan Overseas, Prestige 7134 from Atomic Records? Someone mentioned that they had seen feedback on the previous listing, so the assumption that this is a second copy. Hard to believe. It took me 42 years to find one copy, and they end up with two. This one was in M- condition for the record and VG++ for the cover. It sold for $2,850.

John Jenkins with Kenny Burrell, Blue Note 1573. This looked to be an original West 63rd Street deep groove pressing. The record was in VG+ condition and so was the cover. The price was $676.66.

Jackie McLean, A Fickle Sonance, Blue Note 4089. This was an original mono pressing in M- condition for both the record and the cover. It sold for $338.

This one did not sell and has been relisted:

Ken McIntyre, Looking Ahead, New Jazz 8247. This was an original pressing with the deep grooves and the purple labels. It was listed in VG+ condition for both the record and the cover. This also features Eric Dolphy, so I always assume it is desired by collectors. This one failed to get a bid at a start price of $99.
