I used to be a regular at this show, either as a seller or patron. I haven’t been in years, since before Covid. I would love to check it out this year, just to see how the market has changed and get a sense of what dealers are selling, and for how much.If you are thinking about attending, keep me posted. Maybe we can have a Jazz Collector meet up.

Going in the opposite direction, I received an email with the subject line: NJ RECORD BASH SIGNOFF. This was a long-time event, nearly 50 years, according to the email. It was usually held in June at a motel or hotel in New Jersey. This is another one I used to attend regularly, back in the 1980s and 1990s. I remember one time getting there early and setting up a table and the guy next to me was setting up and he had a pile of original Prestige Swingville records in mint condition and I bought the entire pile for about $5 each. I still have those records. Sorry to see the Bash go, but the financial model must be a challenge these days, what with eBay and social media and people no longer getting together to socialize as they used to.

I’m on the mailing list for the labels doing reissues, such as Craft and Blue Note, but unfortunately I’m not on their promo lists for review copies. In any case, the email in box had a promo for new issues from the Original Jazz Classics series from Craft, including Introducing Lee Morgan, The Young Lions from VeeJay, and This Here is Bobby Timmons from Riverside. Blue Note is taking orders for a three-LP Tone Poet set of The Complete ‘Round About Midnight at the Café Bohemia from Kenny Dorham. This would comprise the original Blue Note 1524, plus the two Japanese LPs issued in the 1980s.
The post Record Shows Coming and Going, Reissues Galore first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

Speaking of buying records . . . there was a record show in my neck of the woods this weekend. It was advertised as the first ever Central Berkshire Record Show and it was in a little town called Dalton in Western Massachusetts. I arrived early and paid the additional VIP fee to get first crack at the records, just in case there were any rare Blue Notes to be had. But I was not among the first to arrive and I was pleased to see that the show was pretty crowded. There were more than 20 dealers and the aisles and tables were pretty full during the whole time I was there. I kept a low profile, as is my natural tendency. I found a few decent records at fair prices, as you can see in the photo. The Jaki Byard was a pretty pleasant find because (1) I don’t have a copy of the record and (2) it was an original pressing and (3) the price was about $50 and (4) the seller had it marked as VG which was extremely conservative. To me, record looks M- and the cover is VG+. Checking Popsike, I see that the record, Jaki Byard, Here’s Jaki, New Jazz 8256, has sold for more than $200 several times, so I feel like I got a good deal. Hey, that’s what it’s all about.

The rest of the records I bought were fill-ins, such as the Booker Ervin, Heavy!!!, Prestige 7499. This was priced at about $30 for an original pressing and I was pretty sure the pressing I had at home was a later green pressing. Of course, once I got home and looked at my copy, it is a blue label, so now I have two. Beyond the records in the photo, I came home with a bunch others that were $3 or $4 each, including an original New York label of the Musings of Miles, Prestige 7007. The cover is beat, but the record looks decent. I’ll clean it up and put it on the turntable. For $4, I couldn’t resist. Who could, could you?

Anyway, it was fun going to a record show again. I hadn’t been to one all through Covid and it was nice to be in the action. It was also nice to see that there was a big crowd and a lot of young people. The jazz selection wasn’t bad – I passed up some nice records that I’m sure other Jazz Collectors were able to purchase and enjoy. Next time the show comes to town I’ll let you know in advance. I may even be tempted to get a table of my own. After all, I have now have copies of Booker Ervin Heavy and the Musings of Miles to sell.
The post Another Mini Adventure At the Central Berkshire Record Show first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

I hope that situation changes and I can get back to what used to be my normal routine of posting every day, or at least attempting to post every day. I have been swamped with work and have had less time to think about jazz records, let alone do the work required to create interesting posts. I know that sounds like blasphemy in this narrow vinyl world that we typically obsess about here at Jazz Collector, and, indeed, it does feel a bit untethered to not be poring over eBay or pulling out gems from my collection and putting them on the turntable. All of which is a roundabout way of saying that I have a lot of email to catch up on. 🙂 Let’s start where we so often start: With our friend CeeDee, who has sent me several links that I am anxious to clear out of my inbox, including Johnny Coles, The Warm Sound, Epic 16015.

This was an original pressing. The record was listed in M- condition and the cover was VG+, but I can assure you looking at the picture very few of us in the Jazz Collector world would consider it VG+, what with clear water damage on the bottom corner. Even with that damage the record sold for $455, which is a bit of a shocker to me, and probably to CeeDee as well, which is why it ended up in my email box.

Then there was this one, a record I would never normally watch or notice, leaving it to our friend Clifford to mention: The Art Ensemble of Chicago, Les Stances of a Sophie, Pathe C-062. This was an original pressing listed in VG++ condition for the record and VG- for the cover. It sold for $335, which I assume is a high price for this particular record in this particular condition.

Also in my mailbox was a reminder that there will be a jazz record show in my neck of the woods this weekend, the 43rd Annual Jazz Record Collector’s Bash at the Hilton Garden Inn in lovely Edison New Jersey. It is a two-day affair, Friday and Saturday. Normally this is an event that I would not be able to attend, as it takes place in June every year, a time when it is nearly impossible to pry me from my home in The Berkshires. In fact, I haven’t attended one of these in probably 20 years. But this year is different. The Lovely Mrs. JC has requested my presence in New York this weekend because she has purchased some theater tickets and because she has a conference that she needs to attend, which happens to take place on Saturday during the same hours as the 43rd Annual Jazz Record Collector’s Bash. So what shall I do while she is in the conference? You guessed it. I will drive out to lovely Edison New Jersey for the 43rd Annual Jazz Record Collector’s Bash. Well, wouldn’t you?
The post Jazz Vinyl on eBay and In Edison New Jersey first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

Sorry I haven’t been posting regularly. I feel like I’ve been doing a lot of apologizing for this lately. I do have a lot of real work, but that is no excuse, right? I will try to do better. Last week I was also engaged with preparing for the WFMU Record Fair at the 69th Regiment Armory on 26th Street in Manhattan. I had a table on Friday, and arrived around 2 p.m. for my setup, so I was able to walk around a little. There were a couple of tables that had some nice jazz records, but by the time I got there, several of the dealers from Japan had already swooped in on them and were pulling out the best pieces. I have come to know these dealers over the years and I like them very much and am happy for their success in getting records because I realize they are working on relatively low margins, spending money to come to the States every few months and criss-crossing the country in search of records that may or may not be marked up sufficiently when they return to Japan. So, if they want to sit outside at 8 a.m. waiting for the dealers to show up, more power to them. I heard of a nice copy of Tommy Flanagan Overseas selling for $1,500, and an original Cliff Jordan Blue Note selling for $400. Apparently there was also a Benny Green Back on the Scene somewhere at the show for a $400 price tag. As for me, well, frankly, I thought I had the best jazz records at the show and at the best prices. I had a bunch of 10-inch LPs from the Baltimore collection and I priced them to sell. Needless to say, they all went: Three or four Miles Prestiges, a Max Roach-Clifford Brown on Emarcy, a Clifford Brown-Art Farmer on Prestige, to name just a few. I also had a few Bird Dial 78s that I sold for just $30 each. As for 12-inch LPs, I sold several Horace Silver Blue Notes, a Lou Donaldson Blues Walk (for just $250), Sonny Rollins Plus Four, plus many others. Many of these went to the dealers from Japan. By the time the show actually opened it’s doors at 4 p.m. Friday, I had already sold about half of the records I would sell over the course of the entire day. It was fun, and it was nice chatting with many of the Jazz Collector readers who stopped by. In fact, anyone who mentioned that he read Jazz Collector got a special discount. In the end, I arrived with seven boxes of records and left with five boxes of records. I still have some nice records in those boxes, including a Bud Powell original Blue Note, a Phil Woods original Prestige and a Lou Donaldson Swing and Soul. Next time, I guess.

BTW, discerning readers will note that the picture with this story is a retread from a previous show. When I got home I realized I forgot to take a picture, so . . . .
The post Report From the WFMU Record Fair first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

I just received a note that the 40th annual Jazz Record Collector’s Bash will take place June 27 and June 28 at the Hilton Woodbridge in Iselin, N.J. Not a lot of details yet, but there are always sellers with lots of records and there are usually films and discussions and music as well. I used to attend regularly and scored some nice records, but I haven’t been in years. June 27 and June 28 are prime bass-fishing season up in The Berkshires, so nature calls. I will, however, be at the WFMU Record Fair, which will take place this year May 30-June 1 in New York City. I will have a booth for Friday only, selling some of the duplicates from my recent score in Baltimore. Normally I would also be bass fishing on that particular weekend, but I have a personal engagement in Manhattan, so I’m stuck. But I’ll also have some nice records with me.

Here’s an interesting article: The Vinyl Revival: Who — and Why — Are Those Folks Buying Records Again. It’s nice to see that younger people are discovering what we’ve known all along: There’s no better medium for owning and listening to music than vinyl.

The Art Blakey A Night At Birdland Records Volume 1 and 2, Blue Note 1521 and 1522, have been added to the Library of Congress list of recordings to be preserved in the National Recording Registry. Nice honor for some great records. I would have been nice to have seen the original covers with the release, or even the original 10-inch covers, rather than the reissued cover. But that’s just a quibble. Always nice to see jazz recordings from the era receive honors and accolades, long overdue, wouldn’t you say?

Allow me to lay off eBay for a moment to inform you of a couple of upcoming events that may be of interest. Coming up first is the Jazz Record Collector’s Bash, June 21 and 22 in Iselin, New Jersey, at the Hilton Woodbridge. It has been many years since I attended one of these but, hey, there are jazz dealers with records for sale, so it’s always worth a shot. They also show films and have other activities. I do have a fondly remembered record score at one of these events, a story I have told, probably whenever I’ve written about the event before. The crux of it is there was this guy with a bunch of nice records, many Prestiges and Swingvilles, and a 10-inch Sonny Criss on Clef, and they were all $5 each and I was the first one to arrive at his table. ‘Nuff said.

I also received my notice and contract for the WFMU Record Fair, which will take place

Nov. 22-24 at the Metropolitan Pavilion in New York. This is usually the top event for buyer and sellers in the NY metro area, and possibly across the entire Northeast. You may recall that the 2012 event was cancelled because of Hurricane Sandy. I am still debating whether to get a table for the event this year. I do have a lot of nice doubles to sell, and I am not on eBay these days, so it is likely I will be there for at least one day, perhaps two, with a Jazz Collector table. I’ll keep you posted.
The post A Couple of Events for Jazz Collectors first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

The annual WFMU Record Fair is coming up, for those of you in the New York Metro area or planning to visit the New York area. The dates of the show are October 28, 29 and 30 at the usual location, The Metropolitan Pavilion on West 19th Street. I’ve gone to this show for many years, sometimes as a dealer, and it’s definitely one of the better record shows anywhere, certainly the best in New York. You get jazz dealers from all over the country and they always bring some good stuff because they know there will be a lot of other dealers there, particularly some of the dealers from overseas. Last year I brought several original Blue Notes and Prestiges, doubles from my collection, and they were pretty much sold before the official opening of the show on Friday evening. If you’re going to go and if you’re really seeking the heavy duty records you should

get there when the doors officially open at 4 p.m. on Friday and, if you’re really smart, you should hook up with a dealer and get in even earlier to be there when the other dealers arrive. Even if you miss out on the most collectible – i.e., expensive – records, there is always a ton of good jazz vinyl at this show and it is often at reasonable prices, depending upon the dealer. I don’t think I will be getting a table this year – haven’t gotten one yet and I imagine it’s sold out – but I’m not all that prepared. Having moved twice this year, to the city and to The Berkshires, I have many records in storage and I haven’t sorted them out or labeled them yet. Perhaps next year when things settle. Besides, the weekend of the show is also the birthday weekend of the lovely Mrs. JC and there are other celebratory plans in the works.

If you’re in the New York Metropolitan area at the end of June you might want to head over to the Jazz Record Collector’s Bash in Iselin, New Jersey. This is a two-day event, June 24 and 25, and there are dealers with records for sale and vintage video presentations. Last year there were 36 dealers on the first day, according to Art Zimmerman, who runs the event. This event has been going on annually for 37 years, believe it or not, and there’s a history on the Web site at Jazz Record Collector’s Bash. There was a time I used to go regularly, often looking for records, but a couple of times renting a table. I do remember a couple of very nice scores there when I was a dealer: I know I’ve told this story, but there was a guy who had a bunch of beautiful Prestige Swingville and Moodsville in unplayed mint condition and he was selling them for $5 apiece and I was able to get to him before anyone else, so I scooped up most of the good stuff. I also remember that he had a 10-inch Sonny Criss on Clef that I bought for $5 and eventually sold for $175. Thinking about it, I’d love to go again this year, but I fear my schedule may not permit it. If anyone does go, feel free to write a guest column for the rest of us at Jazz Collector.

For the past few weeks I have been cleaning and packing and pricing records in anticipation of the WFMU Record Fair, which will begin next Friday at the Metropolitan Pavilion in New York. I’ve had a table at this fair a couple of times before. I’m not a dealer, but I have hundreds of duplicates so I use this as a way to get rid of records that I either don’t want to sell on eBay or, more likely, don’t have time to sell on eBay. If you are in the New York area next weekend it’s definitely worth a visit. I’ve always found nice jazz there — usually I buy more than I sell but, hey, I am a Jazz Collector, right? I’ll also have some nice items to sell as well because I’ve bought a couple of collections in the past year and I haven’t been selling on eBay in months, so it will all be fresh new inventory no one has ever seen. Perhaps even a couple of original Blue Notes. The fair starts with early admission on Friday at 4 p.m. and goes through Sunday evening. And if you’re there, you better come say hi, right?
The post See You At the Fair? first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

So I did go to the WFMU Record Fair on Sunday. I’ve attached a picture to prove it. I didn’t buy any records. My goal with Record Shows has traditionally been to find bargains. You often get dealers who don’t know anything about jazz vinyl, and sometimes they under-price the records, and sometimes they are just trying to get rid of records, and sometimes they are happy to bargain so they don’t have to take the records home. There have also been many times where I’ve met collectors who really didn’t know the value of their records, and they underpriced everything that they had. I’ve written here about the guy who had a bunch of original Blue Notes and Prestiges and just priced everything at $5, including a mint copy of

Tina Brooks True Blue. Which is all a long way of saying that the real way to work these record shows is to get there hours before the show opens and walk around as the dealers are setting up. This works best if you get a table as a dealer and sell some records yourself. I would normally do this, but I had to be out of town on Friday and Saturday. So, by the time I got to the show when it opened on Sunday, I assumed that the early birds had already scooped up all of the bargains, and there would be nothing worthwhile left for me. And, I was right. There were still some sellers with some nice records, but they had lasted through the weekend because the prices were out of whack. I saw a copy of Charles Rouse, Yeah on Epic for $1,000 and it wasn’t even in M- condition. I saw a lot of other records where the price didn’t match the condition, or the condition didn’t match the price. So I passed.

Among the people I asked about the show, the consensus was that it was pretty much business as usual. There were definitely fewer sellers than in past years, and attendance on Sunday seemed to be down. One seller said the Sunday attendance was the worst he had remembered in four years of attending the show, but Saturday was perhaps the best attendance. There were a lot of jazz records in general at the show: In fact, just about every table had some jazz. But there were only a few tables — perhaps five or six — that had any worthwhile collectibles and by the time I got there they were probably cleaned out of the ones that were realistically priced. Anyway, I would have preferred to have been there on Friday when the dealers were just arriving and unpacking. If anyone was there during that time and would like to share his or her experiences, please feel free to comment on this post. Oh, there were a couple of people interviewing and filming people for a short documentary about vinyl collectors. Who knows if this ever see the light of day, but I was among those they interviewed. I’ll keep you all posted if anything ever comes of that.
The post WFMU Record Fair: A Brief Report first appeared on jazzcollector.com.
