Catching Up on Some Blue Notes

We’d mentioned the other day that we were watching some Blue Notes so today we will catch up on some of the items we’ve been watching.

Wayne Shorter, JuJu, Blue Note 4182. This was an original pressing in M- condition, both record and cover. It was sold by Euclid Records, which generally means it will get top dollar. This one did: It sold for $443.88. We’ve only tracked this record one time previously in the Jazz Collector Price Guide and it sold for $115 in VG++ condition. So this will go into the Price Guide as a new high point for this record. 

Kenny Dorham, Afro Cuban, Blue Note 1535. This was an original Lexington Avenue pressing. The record was VG++ and the cover was pretty beat, listed as G+ or VG-. Despite the poor condition of the cover, the record still sold for $483.

Problems With eBay?

Not sure if anyone else is having problems with eBay, but I am. As a seller, I often use the Featured Plus tool, which normally allows my items to appear on the first page of any search for Jazz records with the subcategory of 33-RPM. I’e been doing this for years and there hasn’t been a problem. Then, this week, eBay changed it’s view and search functions and all of a sudden my items are not appearing on the first pages of searches anymore and, in fact, I can’t find any search where they are being listed. This is one of the items that’s currently listed as Featured Plus: Introducing Lee Morgan, Savoy 12091. It’s a nice item, already over $100 by the way. Anyway, I’m posting this to see if anyone else is having problems with the new version of eBay, either in searching to purchase items or in listing items. I am a Power Seller, not that being a Power Seller carries that much weight, but I am curious if other people are having problems and if anyone is finding solutions. Also, if anyone can find a search where my Lee Morgan record appears as a featured item, please be kind and let me know. I don’t know about you, but I hate it when eBay tries to fix things that aren’t broken and winds up screwing up a perfectly good system.

We’ve been quiet the past few days, but eBay keeps buzzing along at its own pace whether we tune in or not. There are a few interesting items we’re watching today and most of them happen to be on the Blue Note label (I’m sure that comes as a shock(!) to many of you). Anyway, here are some of the items we’re watching with appropriate commentary. Please feel free to comment as well.

The first item is one of our own: Clifford Brown Memorial Album, Blue Note 1526. This one is listed as VG on the record and VG+ on the vinyl. It happens to be a very nice listening copy and it’s only at $49 now, so it could be a bargain for someone looking to own an original Lexington Avenue pressing.

Get ‘Em While They’re Hot

We don’t usually plug our own records on eBay, but we’ve got some nice items closing later today and later this week and the prices are not too high. So, perhaps there are bargains out there. Here are some of the items worth watching. After you look at these, please go to View Seller’s Other Items and click “list.” 

Sonny Rollins, Moving Out, Prestige 7058. This is an original New York pressing with the yellow label and deep groove. The record is in VG++ condition and the cover is VG+. It sounds great. The current price is just a little over $100.  In the Jazz Collector Price Guide we’ve seen M- copies of this record sell for nearly $500. 

Herbie Hancock, Takin’ Off, Blue Note 4109. This is a New York USA pressing that is autographed by Herbie Hancock. The record is in VG+ condition and sounds great. The cover is VG++. The current price is just

Nice Norgrans at High (But Not Blue Note) Prices

We’ve been watching a few records on the Norgran label on eBay and we’ve been pleasantly surprised by the continued strong market. Here are a couple of the records we’ve been watching:

Johnny Hodges, Dance Bash, Norgran 1024. This was an original pressing in M- condition, both record and cover. It has a beautiful cover illustration by David Stone Martin. The price was $274. This is one of those Norgrans that, instead of the trumpeter logo, has the logo of the couple dancing, also designed by David Stone Martin. I’ll post a copy in a later posting. I still owe Rudolf  a post on the David Stone Martin book, which I will also get to later.

Stan Getz, Interpretations Volume 3, Norgran 1029. This was also an original pressing (with the trumpeter logo) and also has a cover designed by David Stone Martin. This copy was in M- condition, both record and cover, and sold for $274.

Some Nice Blue Notes For The Price Guide

We’ve seen several nice Blue Note records break the $1,000 price barrier in the past couple of weeks, including the copy of Cool Struttin’ by Sonny Clark that sold for $3,416. Here are some of the Blue Notes that we will be entering into the Jazz Collector Price Guide this weekend. 

Lee Morgan, Candy, Blue Note 1590. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing. The record was VG++ and the cover was M-. The price was $1,575.

Lee Morgan, Indeed, Blue Note 1538. This was an original Lexington Avenue pressing in VG+ condition, both record and cover. The price was $900.

Thad Jones, The Magnificent Volume 3, Blue Note 1546. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing. The record was VG++ and the cover was M-. The price was $500.

A $1,000 Bill Evans & a Few More For The Price Guide

We’ve been quite busy selling some nice records on eBay and posting a few more, but we’ve still made time to keep an eye on some of the interesting collectibles that other people are selling. Here’s an update, all of which will be entered into the Jazz Collector Price Guide sometime over the weekend:

Bill Evans, New Jazz Conceptions, Riverside 223. This was an original white label pressing with the original cover. The cover is one of the things that makes this so collectible, since subsequent versions were released with another cover. For this copy, the record was in M- condition and the cover was listed as VG/VG+. The price was $1,136.

Phil Woods, Warm Woods, Epic 3436. This was an original pressing with the yellow label. The record and the cover were both in M- condition. The price was $555.

Helen Merrill, Emarcy 36006. This was the original pressing of this LP, which features

One For the $3,000 Bin

Here’s one that sold for more than $3,000 the other day: Sonny Clark, Cool Struttin’, Blue Note 1588. This was an original pressing in M- condition, both record and cover. It had the advantage of being sold by Euclid Records, which is one of the larger sellers on eBay and has an excellent reputation. This copy sold for $3,416, which puts it among the Top Five we’ve recorded on the Jazz Collector Price Guide.  If you click the previous Price Guide link, it should take you to a page where all of the records are sorted by highest prices first, which is always a fun way to view the Price Guide. 

Speaking of prices, we’ve got some nice items closing tomorrow at pretty reasonable prices, and we just put up some interesting new items that are closing next week. Among the more interesting items we have up now are a Lexington Avenue pressing of Paul Chambers, Whims of Chambers, Blue Note 1534. This is closing tomorrow and is currently about about $180. Looking for a Serious Jazz Collector in the D.C. Area

Ever since we started appearing regularly in Google searches, all kinds of interesting people are finding Jazz Collector, which is great. We recently got a peak at a very cool Bud Powell collectible that we hope to share with you soon, and we also just got a note from a documentary filmmaker who is looking for a serious jazz record collector in the greater Washington DC area for a documentary movie about jazz. We are up in the lovely Berkshire Mountains of Western Massachusetts, sitting on our porch with the lovely Mrs. JC, and looking at jazz records on eBay. Life is not bad. Here are a few items we will be entering into the Jazz Collector Price Guide sometime before the end of the weekend. 

John Coltrane, A Love Supreme, Impulse A-77. This was an original stereo pressing with the orange label and gatefold cover. It was in M- condition, both record and cover. It sold or $150. One of the reasons I’m putting this up is that I recently acquired a mono copy in M- to go with my stereo copy, also in M- condition, and I am currently deciding whether to keep both or put one up for auction on eBay, or, perhaps, even sell it here on Jazz Collector. I am open to offers and/or suggestions.

Thelonious Monk, Prestige 7053. This was an original pressing with the cover design by Andy Warhol. It was in VG++/VG++ condition
