Leapin’, Lopin’ and eBayin’

Here’s some more jazz vinyl to watch, starting with Sonny Clark, Leapin’ and Lopin’, Blue Note 4091. This looks to be an original New York USA mono pressing. The record and the cover are both listed in VG++ condition. The bidding is at about $180 and there’s more than a day left on the auction. I now am the proud owner of two copies of this record, so perhaps I will be putting one of mine up on eBay soon.

Art Taylor, Taylor’s Tenors, New Jazz 8219. This is an original purple label pressing with the deep grooves. The record looks to be in M- condition and the cover looks to be probably VG++. This one is now in the $225 range with more than a day left on the auction. This seller has several nice records on eBay now, also including: Sonny Rollins Plays, Period 1204. This is an original pressing that looks to be in VG++ condition for both the record and the cover. The bidding is approaching $500. I think this is the only Sonny Rollins collectible record I don’t own as an original pressing.

Quite a Waltz

Wait a second. How did I miss this one: Bill Evans, Waltz for Debby, Riverside 399. This was an original white label promo copy. The vinyl was listed in M- condition and the cover was VG+. The price was, get ready, $3,050.

Here are a few we’re watching on eBay now, starting with Introducing Lee Morgan, Savoy 12091. This is an original red label pressing listed in VG condition for the record and VG+ for the cover. The price is about $190 and the auction closes later today.

Art Blakey, The Jazz Messengers at the Cafe Bohemia, Volume 2, Blue Note 1508. This is an original Lexington Avenue pressing. The record is in VG+ condition and the cover is VG++. The auction closes today and the bidding is in the $280 range.

A New Standard for United Artists Blue Notes?

Here’s another selection of jazz vinyl we are watching on eBay, starting with Johnny Griffin, A Blowing Session, Blue Note 1559. This is clearly marked as a United Artists pressing. The seller lists it as a 1968 pressing, which I think he’s just making up. As far as I know these United Artists Blue Notes were originally issued for the Japanese market in the late 1970s or early 1980s. In any case, this is in VG++ condition for the record and the cover and is currently at a price of $78. Is it possible that these United Artists Blue Notes are increasing in value to the point where they are becoming collectibles? Or is it perhaps an aberration, some bidders not knowing, some not caring, some not reading the listing carefully enough?

Our friends at Euclid Records have some very nice records on eBay now, including The Unique Thelonious Monk, Riverside 209. This is an original white label pressing listed in VG++ condition for the record and VG+ for the cover. This one is already in the $250 range with nearly four days left on the auction. A Delightful Trio of Jazz Vinyl

Here are some other jazz vinyl auctions we’ve been watching on eBay, starting with Art Taylor, AT’s Delight, Blue Note 4047. This is an original West 63rd pressing with the deep grooves, Van Gelder, ear, etc. It is listed in VG++ condition for the record and VG++ for the cover. The bidding is in the $530 range and the auction closes later today.

Dexter Gordon, Doin’ Allright, Blue Note 4077. This was an original New York pressing. The seller listed it in VG+/VG++ condition for the record and the cover. In the description, he mentioned tape on the cover. To me this immediately marks the condition down to VG+, not VG++. So I would also question the condition of the vinyl, but that’s just me. This one sold for $222.50, which is what I would expect for a VG+ pressing of this record, so I guess others may have had the same sense on the grading.

Lady in $atin and $tereo

Here are a few more jazz vinyl auctions we are watching on eBay. This one is from the seller bobdjukic and it is always suprising: Billie Holiday, Lady in Satin, Columbia 8048. This is a six-eye stereo pressing listed in VG++ condition for the record and VG++ for the cover. It is always surprising in that this seller is somehow able to get collectible prices for this record, where no one else can. This one is already at more than $120. And the explanation is . . . ?

This is from the same seller at, at this point, it is actually priced at less than the Billie Holiday record: John Coltrane (et al), Tenor Conclave, Prestige 7074. This looks to be an original New York yellow label pressing. The seller lists the record in VG++ condition and the cover as well, but it seems clear from the pictures of the cover that the real condition is VG+. Perhaps why the bidding is relatively low, at about $115 with a few hours left on the auction.

I now have duplicate copies of this great Blue Note and will be figuring out my next step once I get a chance to grade and listen to both copies:

Ho, Ho, Ho. Here are the jazz vinyl auctions we are watching on eBay on this sunny Christmas morning in New York City.

Sonny Rollins, Way Out West, Contemporary 3530. This looks to be an original pressing with the yellow label and deep grooves. The seller calls it an original, but I think he may not be fully aware. It would have been better if he had included a picture of the back cover so that potential bidders could see, if indeed, the cover had the red writing to confirm its provenance. This one is listed in VG+ condition for both the record and the cover. The start price is $250 and, as of now, there are no bidders. The same seller also has: Lee Morgan, The Cooker, Blue Note 1578. This also looks to be an original pressing, listed in VG condition for the record and Ex for the cover. The starting price is $400 and so far there are no bids.

Atomic Records continues to have some nice items on eBay. We are still watching that copy of Tommy Flanagan Overseas, which closes tomorrow. We are also watching:

Here’s some nice jazz vinyl we’re watching on eBay now, starting with: Lee Morgan, Candy, Blue Note 1590. This is an original pressing listed in VG+ condition for both the record and the cover. It is a relatively new listing, with more than six days to go, but the price is already in the $800 range with 16 bids as of this writing. Has the makings of a bidding frenzy, perhaps.

Charlie Rouse, Bossa Nova Bacchanal, Blue Note 4119. How often do you get to write the word “bacchanal?” This one is in M- condition for the record and VG++ for the cover. It is an original pressing and there are four days left on the auction. Bidding is in the $190 range.

Hank Mobley, Workout, Blue Note 4080. This is an original New York USA pressing listed in Ex condition for the record and VG++ for the cover. The auction closes later today and the bidding is in the $350 range.

Tracking Some High-End Jazz Vinyl

Here’s some high-end jazz vinyl collectibles we’re watching on eBay, starting with: Kenny Dorham, Afro-Cuban, Blue Note 1535. This looks to be an original pressing, although the seller could certainly be more forthcoming with details. Then again, the seller has a rating of just 98.1 percent, so that could be a warning right there. The record is listed in M- condition and the cover is VG. The bidding is close to $800 and there are still two and a half days left on the auction.

Another Blue Note: Johnny Griffin, The Congregation, Blue Note 1580. This looks to be an original pressing and, of course, it has the Andy Warhol cover. The record is listed in Ex condition and the cover is listed as VG+. The price is in the $400 range and there are more than two days left in the auction.

Getting “Hipp” To Some Nice Jazz Vinyl

Okay, back to the business of watching rare jazz vinyl on eBay. I’ve been less diligent about watching (and posting) because 1: I’ve been spending a lot of time listening to the records from the collection I just purchased in Baltimore and 2: Having purchased this major collection and melding it with my collection, the last thing I am looking to do now is purchase any more jazz records. But I realize I have an obligation to our loyal readers here at Jazz Collector, so back to eBay it is. Lots of great items on the board right now, including:

Jutta Hipp at the Hickory House, Volume 1, Blue Note 1515. This is an original Lexington Avenue pressing listed in VG++ condition for the record and VG+ for the cover. It is currently in the $450 range with more than two days left on the auction. The same seller is selling Jutta Hipp at the Hickory House Volume 2, Blue Note 1516. This is a not-quite-original. It looks like the original vinyl, in VG++ condition, with a later cover, which looks to be in nice condition, but without a listed grade. Bidding on this one is already more than $200. An Early Prestige, A Few from KD

Wow, that last post drew quite a compelling discussion. I have yet to listen to that Ted Brown record, but it is definitely on the agenda. In the meantime, there are many interesting records currently for sale on eBay, including:

Jon Eardley Seven with Zoot Sims, Prestige 7033. This is an original New York yellow label pressing. The record is in VG+ condition and the cover is VG++. The start price is in the $300 range and, with nearly three days left in the auction, there are no bidders yet. We would expect this one to sell, but you never know. It is Prestige and not Blue Note, after all.

Kenny Dorham and the Jazz Prophets, ABC Paramount 122. This looks to be an original deep groove pressing. It’s not simple to decipher the condition based on the seller’s description, but I would guess that the record is between VG+ and VG++ and the cover is probably about the same. The start price for this one is $300 and, with less than two days left, there are no bidders.
