    Couple of comments, I enjoy your style and fervor for the music, very easy to listen! I cracked up at the beginning when you mentioned thinning out some of you collection but not willing to let certain albums go! I didn’t mind the little dust/crackle on one of the tracks it gave it character, for me that is.

    Thank you for sharing more of Coltrane life struggles and being able to overcome his heroin habit and emerge stronger for it. I love his early work on Prestige with Miles, as well as with Garland and others as it’s part of his journey. So many speak of his work on Impulse, I totally understand why. But again, really enjoy his work on Prestige. You brought up collecting, I laughed about the part on Tenor Conclave and where to house it in one’s collection, mine too is with all my Coltrane. There were so many great tenor players, and I listen to many but fine myself going to the Coltrane LPs both as the headliner or sideman the most.

  • Thanks, Kyle. The feedback is very helpful. I was pleased with the show in the music I selected, but was a bit upset with myself for not noticing the dust on the stylus and letting a couple of the records play through with too much surface noise. But it’s vinyl, and that sometimes does happen, doesn’t it?

  • Aloha Al, I totally understand as you are a professional. You take the time to plan out your shows, prep for it then something as small as the studio’s turntable stylus can affect a show. I liked how you were able on the fly to say you brought in a stylus cleaner and then cleaned it. In essence teaching those who may not know and just getting into vinyl a valuable skill.

    By the way, I was not alive during Coltrane’s life, I wish I had been. I have a friend in his late 80’s that was and saw him play many times live in NYC. I love listening to his stories about that time! When I started to get into this great music after college in the later 90’s, I learned from my “people” on the Japan side how much they enjoyed Coltrane going there. They said Miles came in pristine suits, had a certain “aura” about himself, almost haughty if I may say. Nothing against that, as that was his style at the time. But Coltrane they said was so different, “loose” coming off the plane in short sleeve shirt, windbreaker, more humble. They respect both tremendously but at the time really took to John, showed him their love. I joked with my “relatives” that they worked Coltrane to hard because they couldn’t get enough of him, probably wished he could play 24/7!

    Anyhow, rambling now, lol! I enjoyed your show. Will share with others. Keep up the good work! Mahalo!

  • Half the fun of my doing live radio shows back in the day was coming into the control room for your shift and finding out that the cd players weren’t working when you brought all CDs to play or the turntable was broken when you brought all lps to play.
    Lots of live improvisation goin’ on then

  • Aloha Al, question: something you brought up in your last radio show, how to catalog one’s library.

    For example, do you mix jazz vocals in with the instrumental jazz? I have Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong on Verve. Was wondering if it should be under Ella or Louis. Another one I have is Waltz for Debby, Zetterlund and Evans. I admit I originally was drawn to it because of Bill Evans. Wonder how it should be cataloged.

    You mentioned Coltrane. After I got into the music and discovered him, of course I wanted all the albums he headlined but also in as supporting cast. He was on many Prestige lps in this role. I’ve generally keep all my Red Garland together be it him in a trio or larger that includes Coltrane. Then I have Taylor’s Wailers. I believe he is only on one track C.T.A.

    So any advice in regard to vocals if it should be included with everything or if one should separate out and just have a vocals section. Then for an lp that has a prominent musician listed like the Ella Louie or Zutterland Evans, should it be with the vocalist or the player?

    Thank you again, this is both therapeutic and helpful to not only organize my music but figure out which records can go and which ones stay. I’m embarrassed to admit some lps I might have 3+ copies of, lol! Mahalo and keep up the good work!

  • PS: sorry Al for the many questions. Do with Taylor’s Wailers do you keep that album with your Taylor library? And with an LP that is on Prestige New Jazz like Jordan Jenkins and Timmons, do you catalog that with Clifford Jordan or create another section with mixed players sharing the “spotlight?” Thanks again.     Yo dude, choose the method that feels right for you. Al may be the great guru, but in the end they’re your records(for the time being). Whatever filing order you choose is the right one.
