Bird 10-Inch Savoy Enters $1,000 Bin

Here’s a record new to the $1,000 bin and it’s presence there is somewhat of a surprise to us: Charlie Parker, Savoy 9000. This is a 10-inch LP and I’ll assume it’s the original cover. I have this record with two different covers and was never sure which one came first. The high price tag leads me to believe this is the first cover, and I assume it is the first cover for the rest of the series. It’s also surprising to see a Bird record sell for such a high price, and a 10-inch LP to sell for such a high price, and a Savoy to sell for such a high price. But, all of that notwithstanding, it did sell for a high price: $1,335 to be precise. The record was in M- condition and the cover was VG+.

Al, that is amazing indeed, exactly for the 3 reasons you give. IMHO this sale was a 2nd version of MG 9000 (photo design by Burt Goldblatt). The first version came out (as vol. 1 of a series of four, with 4 identical photo covers, with just the colour of the lettering changing for each volume.(MG 9000, 9001, 9010, 9011). As a matter of fact these 4 10″ LP’s give the original masters of Bird’s Savoy sessions. I have the second pressings/cover series, which are designed by Burt Goldblatt. They have different designs for each volume. The covers are laminated, whereas the other, “earlier” version was not laminated. The big plus of these 10 inchers is that the remastering job by van Gelder of this material for the 12 inchers was not very successful: the original sound of the 10 inchers is much better than the more familiar 12″ albums of this material (12000, 12001, 12009, 12014, 12079), which are all remastered.

Al, can you show the other version of Sav 9000, which you have in your collection? I saw it once, long ago. Is it unlaminated?
Does it match what I pretended?

  • Hi, Rudolf. Yes, I can show it, but it will have to wait until Monday. I have already snuck off to my lake house for the weekend.

  • I have a Savoy Vol. 1 MG-9000 That I bought myself in the early ’50s. Is there still any interest? I would be willing to sell for right $$. Many thanks.
