I have yet to listen to that Ted Brown record, but it is definitely on the agenda. In the meantime, there are many interesting records currently for sale on eBay, including:

Jon Eardley Seven with Zoot Sims, Prestige 7033. This is an original New York yellow label pressing. The record is in VG+ condition and the cover is VG++. The start price is in the $300 range and, with nearly three days left in the auction, there are no bidders yet. We would expect this one to sell, but you never know. It is Prestige and not Blue Note, after all.

Kenny Dorham and the Jazz Prophets, ABC Paramount 122. This looks to be an original deep groove pressing. It’s not simple to decipher the condition based on the seller’s description, but I would guess that the record is between VG+ and VG++ and the cover is probably about the same. The start price for this one is $300 and, with less than two days left, there are no bidders.

Speaking of Kenny Dorham:

Kenny Dorham, Quiet Kenny, New Jazz 8225. This is an original deep groove purple label pressing that looks to be in VG++ condition for both the record and the cover. The pricing is in the $340 range with seven bids. There are more than two days left in the auction. There’s another copy of Quiet Kenny as well. This one looks to be in VG condition for the record, with no grading for the cover. Tough to bid without a full grading, as the seller is likely discovering. No action on this one yet with a start price of $399.

Here are some of the ones we’ll be watching for you at Jazz Collector:

As noted, the lovely bobdjukic is back with a lot of superbly hyped records, including: J.R. Monterose, Blue Note 1536. This looks clearly to be an original pressing and it is listed in VG+ condition for both the record and the cover. It closes at the end of the week and is already at $510. This will certainly be in the $1,000 bin soon. From the same seller, among others, is John Coltrane, Lush Life, Prestige 7188. I mention this because I have a friend looking for a nice original pressing of this record. This one looks to be in VG++ condition for the record and VG+ for the cover. It is now at $100. I’m sure you all know the great story behind this record, about the trio side which was only a trio side because Red Garland forgot to show up for the date.

This is from another seller: Lee Morgan, City Lights, Blue Note 1575. This one looks to be VG++ for the record and perhaps VG+ for the cover, although part of the top right corner is off. The current price is $485 and there are about three days left.

Kenny Dorham and the Jazz Prophets Volume 1, ABC Paramount 122. This is an original pressing that looks to be in M- condition for both the record and the cover. The current price is $228 and there is only one bidder.

Duke Jordan, Flight To Jordan, Blue Note 4046. This looks to be an original pressing. The record is in M- condition and the cover is VG+. The start price is $699 and there are no bidders, but still six days to go. We’ll keep an eye on it for you, as is our custom.
The post eBaying This Week: JR,Trane and More first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

Here are a few records we’ve been watching:

Lee Morgan, The Cooker, Blue Note 1578. This seemed to be an original pressing listed as being in near mint condition. The price was $741. It’s hard to think of a record selling for $741 as being a bargain but given Blue Note prices lately, this seems kind of low. I had expected it to break into the $1,000 bin.

Because of some of the chatter on the site, we’ve also decided to keep an eye on more second pressings, such as this one: Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, The Big Beat, Blue Note 4029. This was a New York USA pressing — not an original — and it was

in just VG+ condition for both the record and the vinyl. Still, it sold for $54, which is probably what an original of this record in this condition would have fetched a few years ago.

This one was tempting (it always helps to have a nice picture with the auction): Kenny Dorham and the Jazz Prophets, Volume 1, ABC Paramount 122. This was an original pressing in VG++ condition, close to near mint, and it sold for $426.
The post Catching Up: Morgan, Blakey, Kenny Dorham first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

We had a couple of hours to kill last night, so we did something we used to do every day: Scroll through a full 24 hours worth of jazz records listed on eBay. It was good timing, because we found some nice items for our Jazz Collector readers and one item we plan to bid on for ourselves.

Our friends at Euclid Records have a nice batch closing today, including: Kenny Drew Trio, Riverside 224. This is an original white label pressing and is listed in M- condition for both the record and the cover. The current price is $1,256, so, Kenny Drew, welcome again to the $1,000 bin. Also from Euclid is The Tal Farlow Album, Norgran 1047. This is the 12-inch version with the beautiful cover by David Stone Martin. It is in M- condition for both the record and the cover and is currently in the $60 price range. My friend Dan Axelrod, who was Tal’s good friend and protege, swears that the 10-inch version of this record offers far better sound quality than the 12-inch version. I suppose that’s why he has more than a dozen copies of the 10-inch version. Nonetheless, the 12-inch Tal Farlow Album is quite lovely to listen to and quite collectible and is certainly a worthy addition to any collection.

It always pays to read the eBay listings carefully. Here’s an example why:

I’ve been watching a copy of the LP Kenny Dorham and The Jazz Prophets, ABC Paramount 122. This is listed as an original pressing and it’s listed in VG++ condition and the starting price is $100. It’s closing in a couple of hours and there are no bidders. This is a record we’ve tracked several times in the Jazz Collector Price Guide and it usually sells for more than $300 in this condition. We were even thinking about bidding on the record ourselves, but we were cautious: Surely something must be wrong. There was. Looking closer at the listing, it was clear that, yes, this was an original pressing: But it was an original CANADIAN pressing. Too good to be true? In this case, yes, it was.

Finally, there’s always at least one Blue Note worth watching. This one also comes from Euclid Records: Tina Brooks, True Blue, Blue Note 4041. This is an original pressing. The record is VG++ and the cover is VG. The current price is $535.
The post Today on eBay: Tal, Drew, Kenny Dorham, True Blue first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

I bring this up because one of the records that would certainly make the Top Ten of my list is currently available on eBay: Sonny Rollins Plus Four, Prestige 7038. This is an original New York pressing on the vinyl. But is it the original cover, or is the original cover the one with the red and purple design? Let’s see who knows the answer out there. In any case, this one looks to be in nice condition, VG++, and is currently a bit more than $100.

Other items we’re watching:

Our friends at starrynightrecords have a few nice items posted today, including: Kenny Dorham and The Jazz Prophets, ABC Paramount 122. This is an original pressing that looks to be in nice condition, VG++ for both the record and cover. It is currently priced at about $125.

It’s not a heavy Blue Note day. Here’s Sonny Clark, Leapin’ and Lopin’, Blue Note 84091. This is a stereo pressing with the NY USA label. It is in M- condition, record and cover, and is priced at about $130.
The post Today on eBay: Does Sonny + 4 = 100? first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

Here are a few more we’ve added to the Jazz Collector Price Guide:

Johnny Glasel, Jazz Session, ABC Paramount 165. This was an original pressing featuring Dick Garcia on guitar. The record and cover were both in M- condition. The price was $86. We had asked if anyone knew much about this record. Turns out our good friend Dan Axelrod knew Johnny Glasel quite well. He was president of the musicians union in New York and a regular on club dates. I’ve asked Dan to fill in the blanks on some of this and he has promised to do that, so stay tuned.

Sheila Jordan, a Portrait of Sheila, Blue Note 9003. Speaking of jazz guitar (that was Dick Garcia we just mentioned), this LP features some great work by Barry Galbraith. This was an original pressing. The record was in M- condition and the cover was VG+. The price was $79.16.

John Coltrane, Giant Steps, Atlantic 1311. This was an original black label in M- condition. The price was $154.27. A similar copy sold for more than $1,000 a few weeks ago. What was the difference? Who knows.
The post Catching Up With A Few Titles first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

Quite a lot to view today on a snowy day in New York. Here are some of the nicer and more interesting items we are watching at Jazz Collector: This is one of our favorite records from one of our favorite sellers: Art Taylor, AT’s Delight, Blue Note 4047. This is an original West 63rd Street pressing being offered by Euclid Records. The vinyl is in M- condition and the cover is VG++. The current price is about $230. Also from Euclid Records is a beautiful copy of John Coltrane, Blue Train, Blue Note 1577. This one is currently priced at $365.

This is one of interest to us: Johnny Glasel, Jazz Session, ABC Paramount 165. This is also from one of our favorite sellers, Analogman on Long Island, aka Infinity Records. About 25 years ago we purchased a collection and this record was in there primarily, we think, because of the presence of Dick Garcia on guitar. So it’s one of these records that’s been sitting on the shelf for 25 years and we’ve never played it. We’ve also rarely seen it on eBay, so we’re interested to see what it will sell for. We’ll try to listen to it later today and give you a report.
The post Today on Ebay, January 28, 2009 first appeared on jazzcollector.com.
