Watching the Warhol Covers

I’m in the midst of an interesting experiment. Last week I put three records on eBay with a common property: Each features a cover design or cover artwork by Andy Warhol. The three records are The Story Of Moondog, Prestige 7099; Artie Shaw, Any Old Time, RCA 1570; and Artie Shaw, Both Feet in the Groove, RCA Victor 1201. Clearly, the Moondog on Prestige is the big prize of the bunch. In posting the three together, it is clear to see how much the Moondog is the prize of the bunch. I started each item with the same exact price: $49.99. They all close today, and they are all in relatively comparable condition. The Moondog LP currently has a top price of $255. It also has received a total of

165 page views and it has 46 potential buyers watching it on the watch lists. The two Artie Shaw LPs together have a total of zero bids, have been viewed a total of 25 times and have two potential buyers watching them on their watch lists.

A Few More Warhol Covers

There’s been a lot of back-and-forth on Jazz Collector recently about Andy Warhol covers. Here are a few more that sold recently, including a couple for pretty high prices. All of these will be entered into the Jazz Collector Price Guide this week. These first two are from Euclid Records, so they received top dollar: Kenny Burrell, Blue Lights Volume 1, Blue Note 1596. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing. The record was VG++ and the cover was M-. The price was $698.89. The second was Kenny Burrell, Blue Lights Volume 2, Blue Note 1597. This was a New York USA pressing without the deep groove. Clearly not a first pressing. It was in M- condition, record and cover. It sold for $343.88, which seems to tell us that the demand for these Warhols is pretty high right now. Another LP with a

Warhol cover that sold for a fairly high price recently was Artie Shaw, Both Feet in the Groove, RCA 1201. This was an original pressing that looked to be in VG++ condition, record and cover. It sold for $133. Were it not for the cover, the record probably wouldn’t fetch $5 on eBay.

Here are some of the items we at Jazz Collector are watching on eBay today:

The previously mentioned Euclid Records has a few nice items up today, including Charlie Mariano Sextet, Fantasy 3-10. This is a 10-inch LP in M- condition. The current price is $76.

Here’s another one for the $1,000 record bin, or perhaps even the $2,000 bin: Thelonious Monk, Prestige 7053. This is the one with the cover design by Andy Warhol. The record is only in VG condition and the cover is VG+, yet the price is already at $1,775. The same seller has another Warhol cover: Artie Shaw, Both Feet in the Groove, RCA 1201. This is an original pressing and it looks to be in at least VG+ condition. The current price is $71.

Finally, here’s a pretty Norgran currently in the $50 price range: Johnny Hodges, Ellingtonia ’56, Norgran 1055. This one is in what looks like VG++/VG+ condition.
