This is an original pressing. The record is labeled “pristine” and the cover looks to be VG++ or so. The bidding is in the $900 range and there are still three days to go. For those looking to spend big bucks filling in big gap in their Blue Note collections, there is also the companion Jutta Hipp at the Hickory House, Volume Two, Blue Note 1516. This one is also listed in “pristine” condition for the record, with a similar condition on the cover, perhaps VG++, perhaps a little less. This one is in the $800 range with three days left.

The seller bobdjukic is also back with some jazz records, including: The Dave Brubeck Quartet, Time Out, Columbia 8192. This is an original stereo pressing with the 6-eye labels. The record looks to be in M- condition and the cover is VG++. The bidding is in the $100 range and there are still two days left in the auction. History has shown us that this seller is able to sell jazz records for prices that flout conventional market expectations. I don’t follow Brubeck that closely so I took a look at Popsike and discovered that there have been many instances of stereo copies of this record selling for $200 or more. That surprised me but, hey, it is a great, classic record. Even though there were probably many more copies pressed than most jazz records, finding an original in great condition is probably not so easy these days. After all, the first pressings were produced nearly 60 years ago, at the end of 1959.

In quickly browsing through the through the seller’s other listings, I didn’t seen any whacky prices that jumped out at me, as they usually do, but I may have missed something. To the contrary, I may have even noticed a couple of potential bargains, including Benny Green, Walkin’ and Talkin’, Blue Note 4010. This looks to be an original West 63rd Street pressing listed in VG++ condition for both the record and the cover. With less than two days left, the record is still in the $60 range. There is a reserve price, however, so bargain hunting may not be a reality for this one.

Finally, I have this one for you today: Sonny Clark, Cool Struttin’, Blue Note 1588. This is not an original pressing. One label is West 63rd, the other is New York USA. The record and the cover are listed in Ex condition. There are less than two days left on the auction and the bidding is close to $1,400.

Perhaps they will show up at the end, as the often do. But, after seeing so much action on other auctions, I’d expect to see more on this one, considering the sterling reputation of the seller. We’ll see what happens. Some of the records I’m watching from this list:

Bennie Green, Back on the Scene, Blue Note 1587. This is an original pressing in what looks to be pristine condition for both the record and the cover. The start price is $300 and so far there are no bidders. I recently purchased a copy of this record in my Baltimore purchase, so I don’t need it, but I’d be happy to get a copy in this condition for anything less than $500, which may seem possible.

Art Taylor, AT’s Delight, Blue Note 4047. This is also an original deep groove pressing in what looks to be M- condition for the record and the cover. The start price is $250 and there are no bidders as of now. Huh? This is a great record. I happen to own a copy signed by Art Taylor, which is quite precious to me.

Doug Watkins, Watkins at Large, Transition 20. This is an original pressing with the booklet. The record looks to be in M- condition and the cover is probably VG+. The start price on this is $1,000 and, again, no bidders so far.

One more: Red Rodney, Signal 1206. This is an original pressing in M- condition for the record and probably VG++ for the cover. The starting price is $500 and so far there are no bids. We’ve seen a copy of this record sell for more than $1,800 in worse condition, so what gives?

Here are some recent sales:

This one set a new high for this LP: Joe Henderson, Page One, Blue Note 4140. This was an original pressing and it was listed in M- condition for the record and the cover. It sold for $565.58.

Another high one: Benny Green, Back on the Scene, Blue Note 1587. This was also in M- condition. It sold for $620.

Kenny Dorham, Unas Mas, Blue Note 4127. This was an original mono pressing and it was listed in VG++ condition for both the vinyl and the cover. It sold for $283.

This one just ended, as we were typing:

Lou Donaldson, Wailing With Lou, Blue Note 1545. This was an original pressing. The vinyl was VG+ or VG++ and the cover was VG-. We wrote about it earlier today and it was only at about $100. It eventually sold for $523. Perhaps we should stop writing about records we are interested in purchasing? Some of our readers do believe that we have an impact on the prices.

Thad Jones, Detroit-New York Junction, Blue Note 1513. This was an original Lexington Avenue pressing in VG+ condition for the record and the cover. The price was $308.50.
The post More Big Blue Notes, More Big Prices first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

We promised to show you a few more interesting items on sale this weekend on eBay, so here we go. We’ll also follow-up on all of these items during the week to see what happened with them. And, we’ll also include them on our Price Guide, which now includes more than 3,500 entries.

The seller bluenotesound, which I’m pretty sure is affiliated with Mosaic Records, has several interesting Mosaics on sale, including: Andrew Hill, the Complete Andrew Hill Blue Note Sessions 1963-1966, Mosaic MQ10-161. This is number 0006 of a limited edition of 5,000. This seller has several other nice Mosaics, so be sure to look at his other items.

Another seller with some nice items today is the seller roverd-90, including this record: Art Farmer Quintet, Prestige 7017 and this one Hank Mobley and His All Stars, Blue Note 1544.

And the seller Mojee has two real heavyweights: Sonny Rollins, Saxophone Colossus, Prestige 7079 and Hank Mobley, Mobley’s Message, Prestige 7061. If that’s not enough, these seller also has these two nice Prestiges: Jackie McLean, 4, 5 and 6, Prestige 7048 and Zoot Sims Quartets, Prestige 7026

We received a note from Anthony Pearson the other day that he’s running another major auction under his anthonypearson2 account. This is the account he uses for the collection of the late Leon Leavitt, which is being sold on eBay in large increments almost every month. This batch includes about 1,200 records and began closing today and will go through Saturday evening West Coast time. Pearson is also giving winning bidders a break this summer: “It is OK to wait 3 to 4 weeks to issue payment during the summer months,” he writes. Anyway, here are some of the items on this list.

Bennie Green, Walkin’ and Talkin’, Blue Note 4010

Art Farmer, Art, Argo 678. A few weeks ago a mint copy of this sold for more than $100. This one looks to be in nice condition and, as of this posting, had no bids for $24.

The Return of Art Pepper, Jazz West 10

Dexter Gordon, Dexter Calling, Blue Note 4083. There are pages and pages and pages more to look at. After you click one of these just go to “View Seller’s Other Items” to see the complete list. We’ll follow up on these and look at some more tomorrow. See you then. — al

More eBay watching today. Here are some of the items and dealers we’re keeping an eye on for you:

Billie Holiday at Jazz At the Philharmonic, Clef 169. This is a 10-inch LP with the beautiful illustration on the cover that is either by David Stone Martin or Andy Warhol. We looked in our price guide for earlier mint copies of this LP and it sold twice recently, for $610 and $325. This copy is also near mint and was only in the $70 range as we posted this.

Kenny Burrell, Blue Lights Volume 1, Blue Note 1596. This one does have an Andy Warhol cover. The cover is VG++, but the record is only VG. We’ve had it in better condition on our Price Guide and it has sold for $250 and $438. In addition to this LP, the dealer, Atomic_Records, has some other nice items on eBay, so you might want to do a search of “View Seller’s Other Items.”

Another dealer with nice items currently on eBay is Jazz5060. Here’s another Kenny Burrell Blue Note:

Kenny Burrell Live at the Five Spot, Blue Note 4021. This one looks to be in nice condition, not quite mint minus, but pretty close. In our Price Guide, we’ve seen copies sell for $114 to $275. This one was already priced at nearly $230 as we posted this and it still hadn’t met the reserve price.

The dealer JBLD44000 is also back with some high-ticket items, including this one:

Jutta Hipp at the Hickory House Volume 2, Blue Note 1516. This copy is listed in M-/M- condition. We haven’t seen this one in our Price Guide yet, so this copy will help fill out the Blue Notes. As we posted this, the price was $620.

And here are the results of some of the auctions we were watching yesterday:

This first one is also from Jazz5060

Benny Green, Walking Down, Prestige 7049, in M-/VG++ condition. Price: $338

Wynton Kelly, Kelly At Midnite, VeeJay 3011. This was a promo copy with the white label and was in M-/VG++ condition. Price: $147.95.

Finally, here’s a 10-inch LP with a nice looking cover:

Ben Webster, The Big Tenor, Emarcy 26006. Price: $103.50

That’s it for today. Keep checking Price Guide and Latest Prices for an ongoing look at the eBay market. We’ll see you tomorrow. — Al
