We’ve been quite busy the past few days updating the Jazz Collector Price Guide so, if you haven’t looked lately, it’s worth taking a peek. There are more than 4,100 records in there now, and quite a lot in the $1,000-and-up category. If you want to search by highest prices first, you can do that just by clicking the word “Price” at the top of the Guide, or you can just sort by fields. If you want to sort all of the records based on price, you can click on the link for View the Complete Price Guide. Anyway, here are a few more records we’ve added to the Guide.

Johnny Griffin Sextet, Riverside 264. This was an original blue label pressing. The record was listed as M- and the cover appeared by be bout VG+. The price was $237.50.

Miles Davis, Cookin’, Prestige 7094. This was an original New York pressing that was listed in M- condition for both the record and the cover. The price was $394.

The Magnificent Thad Jones, Blue Note 1527. This was an original Lexington Avenue pressing. The record was in VG++ condition and so was the cover. The price was $545.55.

Horace Silver, The Stylings of Silver, Blue Note 1562. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing. The record was listed as M- and the cover was at least VG+, perhaps better. The price was $154.49.

Here’s one we thought would fetch a higher price. Serge Chaloff, Blue Serge, Capital 142. This was listed in M- condition for both the record and the cover. The price was $185.06. I think with a record like this, you have to put Sonny Clark in either the title of your listing, or in the body of the text, so that people doing searches for Sonny Clark can find the record. Many of the fluctuations in the pricing on eBay depend upon subtleties such as this, which is why it’s sometimes difficult to compare, and that’s why we usually show a range on the Jazz Collector Price Guide.
The post Price Updates: Serge, Thad, Miles, Silver, et al first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

Some more for the Jazz Collector Price Guide:

Duke Ellington and John Coltrane, Impulse 30. This was an original white label promo copy. It was in M- condition, both record and cover. The price was $326. We’ve actually seen this go for slightly higher before. Interesting — I went to a play with Mrs. JC the other day (Mrs. Jazz Collector, not Mrs. John Coltrane), and they were using 1960s mood music between scenes. One of the tracks was from this album, In a Sentimental Mood. After the fourth note, I was able to identify it. Not difficult really — it’s a very recognizable version. Excellent play, by the way: The American Plan. Worth seeing if you’re in New York.

We were watching these two LPs from Serge Chaloff and questioning how big a difference the presence of Sonny Clark was have on impacting the price. Quite a bit, it turns out:

Serge Chaloff, Boston Blow-Up, Capital 6510, is the one without Clark. The record was M- and the cover was VG++. The price was $49. Serge Chaloff, Blue Serge, Capital 742. This is the one with Sonny Clark. It was in similar condition to Boston Blow-Up. It sold for $294.

Lee Morgan, The Cooker, Blue Note 1578. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing. The record was VG+ and the cover was also VG+. The price was $462.

Here’s one I didn’t realize was a collectible: The Heath Brothers, Marchin’ On, Strata-East 19766. This was in VG++ condition and sold for $120.25

Oliver Nelson, Screamin’ the Blues, New Jazz 8243. This was in M- condition and was an original, with the deep groove and the purple label. The price was $107.50.

Finally two from Ernie Henry. Presenting Ernie Henry, Riverside 222. This was an original white label pressing in M- condition. It sold for $456. Ernie Henry, 7 Standards and a Blues, Riverside 248. This was a blue label pressing. The record was M- and the cover was VG++. The price was $167.50.
The post Ellington and Trane on Broadway; Plus Serge Chaloff With and Without Sonny Clark first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

We can’t spend too much time on eBay this morning because we have to watch the historic inauguration of Barack Obama, which is very exciting. But we’ve be able to cull through the next 24 hours worth of jazz collectibles, to bring you a few gems that are being offered today by various sellers. Foremost among these sellers is Euclid Records, which always seems to come up with some goodies. Here are a couple: Serge Chaloff, Blue Serge, Capital 742. This is an original pressing. The record is M- and the cover is VG++. The current price is $294. Also from Euclid is Serge Chaloff, Boston Blow-Up!, Capital 6510. This also seems to be an original pressing. The record is M- and the cover is VG++. The current price is $33. Goes the presence of Sonny Clark on Blue Serge make that much of a difference in the value between these two records?

Also coming up today on eBay are:

A beautiful copy of Sonny Rollins and the Modern Jazz Quartet, Prestige 7029. This is a copy with the original orange cover that had the wrong catalogue number (Prestige 7020 instead). It has the original yellow label and is in M- condition, also from Euclid Records. The current price is $430.

Another nice Prestige: Hal McKusick, Triple Exposure, Prestige 7135. This is an original New York pressing. It looks to be in about VG+ condition, record and cover. The current price is $46.
The post Today on eBay, January 20, 2009 first appeared on jazzcollector.com.
