I do think that the previous post set a new high for comments on Jazz Collector — and counting — and we came within 10 page views of our all time high for a single day, set last summer during the midst of my stories about purchasing the record collection of Irving Kalus. In any case, I received a missive from our friends at the Jazz Record Center that they have a new auction on eBay, so I took a look over to see what they had. Here are some of the things I found, starting with: Serge Chaloff, Boston Blow-Up, Capitol 6510. This is an original promo pressing that looks to be in M- condition for the record and possibly M- or VG++ for the cover. I haven’t seen that many yellow label Capitols through the years, to be honest. This one does not seem to have the same cachet as Blue Serge, perhaps minus the presence of Sonny Clark on piano, so it will be interesting to watch this and see if it fetches a collectible price. The starting bid is $50.

Art Farmer, Modern Art, United Artists 4007. Like Blue Serge, this one benefits from the presence of a gifted piano player — both musically and as a collectible. In this case the pianist of note is Bill Evans. This is an original pressing in M- condition for the record and perhaps M- or VG++ for the cover. The start price is $50 and there is already one bid.

Pepper Adams,10 to 4 at the 5 Spot, Riverside 265. This is an original blue label pressing in M- condition for both the record and the cover. The record is newly listed with nearly seven days to go, but already there are two bids and the price is close to $100. Perhaps we’ll see a bidding war for this one. Someone asked me recently if the Five Spot was still around. I told him that it was long gone, but I do remember being there as a kid or young teen. My father used to take us to jazz concerts when we were quite young. I remember my kid brother at 5 or 6 falling asleep at a Kenny Burrell show at one of the clubs. I was probably at the Five Spot half a dozen times. I know I saw Thelonious Monk there, but can’t remember anyone else. I’m also not sure when the Five Spot actually closed. Just tried doing a quick Google search, but it didn’t come up easily. I imagine someone out there will either know or be more persistent in finding out.

Each of these will be entered into the Jazz Collector Price Guide as soon as we get the chance, hopefully by the weekend.

This one almost made the $3,000 bin: Jackie McLean, The New Tradition, Ad Lib 6601. This is the one that was listed as “almost M-” for both the record and the cover. Not sure how I’ll list that in the Jazz Collector Price Guide: Probably VG++, wouldn’t you say? Anyway, this one sold for $2,840.

I was also watching several listings from the seller dobdjukic, who tends to get top dollar, at least, for his auctions. Here are a couple from last week: Miles Davis, Birth of the Cool, Capitol T-762. This seemed to be an original mono pressing. Based on the description, it looked like the record and the cover were both in about VG+ condition. The final price was $315. I just picked up a

duplicate of this record in that auction I won last week. I would be quite happy to get a price close to that when I eventually sell it, but I’m sure that won’t be the case. This one came from the same seller: J. R. Monterose, The Message, Jaro 5004. This was listed as a “insanely rare promo” copy. His words, not mine. This one was listed as “weak” M- for the vinyl and VG++ for the cover. It sold for $833.78.
The post Jazz Vinyl Update: Jackie, Miles, JR first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

This one almost made the $2,000 bin: Sahib Shihab and the Danish Radio Jazz Group, Oktav 111. This was an original Danish pressing. What was most amazing about this listing was the number of views it received — more than 1,600. It was listed so that it came up on the first page when you would do a search of jazz vinyl, but still, 1,600 views is quite a lot for any record. Also, I have to plead my ignorance about this LP: I’ve never seen it before and know nothing about it, so if anyone has insight to share, please feel free to do so. The record seemed to be in VG++ condition, close to M-, and the cover was also about VG++, based on the description. The price was $1,952.60.

This one seemed to get top dollar: Serge Chaloff, Blue Serge, Capitol 742. It was an original pressing in M- condition for both the record and the cover and it was sold by Euclid Records. The price was $364.88. Finding these records in such

mint condition is such a rarity, you wouldn’t be surprised by any price, right? I mean, if this sold for $1,364.88 in this condition no one would be shocked.

This next one sold for nearly the same amount in VG+ condition but, of course, it is a Blue Note: Sonny Rollins, Volume 2, Blue Note 1558. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing. The price was $360.55.

One more. We’ll catch up on that copy of Phil Woods, Woodlore, Prestige 7018. You may recall that we had our eye on that one and debated whether to write about it on Jazz Collector. It was in VG+ condition and it was only around $40 when we did our previous post. We tried to sneak off with it with a snipe bid of about $140. Hah! The record sold for $338.88. Did we bring defeat upon ourself? Highly doubtful. It was merely wishful thinking to suppose that a record such as this would not sell at its fair market price, which it probably did.
The post Catching Up: Sahib, Serge, Newk, Woods first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

In addition to having an occasional existential crisis, I have also been putting some interesting items on eBay that are worth watching. Here are a couple:

The Complete Capitol Recordings of Duke Ellington, Mosaic MD 5-160. I got this a dozen years ago and never even opened it, so I figured it might be time to sell it. The CDs are unopened and the price is close to $100. Also: The Complete Blue Note/UA Curtis Fuller Sessions, Mosaic MD3-166. Similar situation as the Duke, with the CDs unopened. This one is currently at $50, but I’m hoping it goes for a lot more.

I had this one hanging in a frame above my desk: Sonny Rollins, Saxophone Colossus, Prestige 7079. This is an original New York pressing. It is

in pretty beat up condition, as I mention in the listing. I have the vinyl graded as G+, which is pretty low, and the cover as VG-, which is also pretty low. I had noticed, however, from reader comments on Jazz Collector, that original pressings of this LP, even in poor condition, were selling for more than $100, and sometimes higher. So I pulled the record out of the frame — it is a duplicate copy for me — and figured it would be worth selling. There are a lot of other LPs to frame, and most of them are not worth more than $100. This one is currently at about $80 with a few hours to go.
The post On eBay Now: Duke, Fuller, Newk first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

Those auctions we were watching from the seller bobdjukic closed and, while we’re not looking to give this seller any undue publicity, we are quite fascinated with the prices he is somehow able to obtain — even higher than top dealers such as The Jazz Record Center and Euclid Records. We will give a few examples: This one we noted before: Miles Davis, Birth of the Cool, Capitol 762. This is an original British pressing, not even an original U.S. issue. It was listed in M- condition for both the record and the cover and sold for an astounding $812.15. I recently sold a beautiful mint U.S. pressing of this record and was happy to get close to $100 for it. Is there something about the British pressing we’re not aware of? Doubt it, but somebody out there in the Jazz Collector world will know if there is. The other thing is, look at this quote from the seller’s description of Birth of the Cool:

“The earliest Miles Davis material in existence.” So we all know this is not even close to being true, on any level. Do people actually look at that and buy into it? And, if they do, who are they and how can I get them to bid on my records? Here are two more items from the same seller from this weekend that went for prices way beyond the expected market value: Cannonball Adderley, Things are Gettin’ Better, Riverside 286. This was an original blue-label pressing. It was listed in M- condition for the vinyl and VG++ for the cover. It sold for $137.49. Also, Cannonball Adderley In New York, Riverside 404. This was also an original pressing. The vinyl was M- and the cover was VG++. The price was $91.

We’re hoping to spend a couple of hours this morning catching up on eBay and updating the Jazz Collector Price Guide, so stay tuned for more posts and take a look at the Price Guide later in the day because we’ll be adding quite a few records to the $1,000 bin.
The post Catching Up: Miles, Cannon — What’s Going On? first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

Sonny Clark, Sonny’s Crib, Blue Note 1576. This is an original pressing. The record is listed in VG+ condition and the cover is listed as VG++. Seems to be a nice copy. The current price is $385 with one more day to go.

The seller bobdjukic is back with a few items this weekend. I don’t know this seller, but he seems to be a bit unpopular among some of the visitors to Jazz Collector. I’ve censored a few comments about him because, as I’ve said, I don’t really want this site to be a forum to air complaints about individual buyers and sellers. But, having said that, there have been a few complaints. In any case, he seems to have some kind of magic system for getting great prices on his records and in getting high viewership. Here’s one of his records this weekend: The Cannonball Adderley Sextet In New York, Riverside 404. This is a

nice record and the vinyl is M- and the cover is VG++. The current price is about $55. Not Blue Note numbers to be sure, but more than this record typically gets. I’m curious to see what price it eventually goes for. If you look at the seller’s other items, there’s a Miles Davis, Birth of the Cool, Capital 762 that is already at more than $230 with more than 100 page views.

Here’s one you usually don’t think of as a collectible: Dave Brubeck Time Out, Columbia 8192. This is a stereo pressing with the 6-eye label. It has the white promo label, which would seem to make it fairly rare and hard to find. The vinyl on this one is in M- condition and the cover is VG++. The current price is $50. We’ll see if this one makes it to the Jazz Collector Price Guide.
The post This Weekend on eBay: Clark, Cannon, Miles, Brubeck first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

We spent some time last night perusing today’s activities on eBay, so we figured we’d share some of our findings with you on a bright lovely morning in the New York metro area.

Charlie Parker, The Bird Blows The Blues, Dial 901. This is purported to be the first 12-inch LP ever. It was issued as a promo for Dial. There are reports of only 50 pressings of this record, but, we’re sure that is part of the mythology. We’ve written about it before at Jazz Collector and we’ve also tracked pricing in the Jazz Collector Price Guide. Our top price in the past has been $2,850. It certainly does not come up on eBay very often. This one seems to be in pretty nice condition. When we first saw this last night, the price was around a hundred dollars and now it’s around $400 with six hours to go. We’ll see where it ends up. It is quite a rarity and

would certainly be a cool addition to any collection.

If you’re interested in paying a few hundred dollars for a not-so-great copy of the rare jazz vinyl Tommy Flanagan Overseas, Prestige 7134, there’s a copy available today on eBay. This one is listed in VG condition for both the record and the cover. Sometimes these old Prestiges play better than they look. Anyway, this one is in the $200 range with a few hours to go.

Our friends at Euclid Records have a few nice items up today as well, including: Art Farmer Quintet Featuring Gigi Gryce, Prestige 7017. This is an original pressing. The record is listed as VG++ and the cover is M-. The current price is close to $200.

Finally, we have a few records of our own closing today. Here’s one that’s not getting nearly as much action as we had expected: Serge Chaloff, Boston Blow-Up, Capitol 6510. It’s listed in VG+ condition, but I tend to grade conservatively. At the point, it’s only $35, closing later today. I also put up a few decent items yesterday, including the Ike Quebec Blue Note and Jackie McLean Prestige I had mentioned earlier on the site in The Great Jazz Vinyl Countdown.
The post Today on eBay: A Rare Bird Indeed first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

I’ve owned a mint copy for 25 or so years and never listened to it. I found a second copy and put it on eBay last night. In order to list it on eBay I finally put it on the turntable. You know what? I’m selling the one on eBay and keeping the one in my collection. This is quite a nice record, Serge was some player and the bari version of Body and Soul is certainly worth the price of admission. Now I’ve got to give a second listen to Blue Serge before I get any thoughts about getting rid of that one as well. That may be harder to keep, since it is now selling for several hundred dollars in today’s market. I’m hoping that during the course of this process I’ll discover music that’s been sitting around the collection for awhile. I had the same experience with

Beverly Kenney recently: I’d had a couple of her records for years without ever realizing how good they were and how good she was. Now I know.
The post Jazz Vinyl Countdown: Serge Chaloff, Boston Blow-Up! first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

Here are a few items of interest we’re following over the next few days:

Jutta Hipp at the Hickory House Volume One, Blue Note 1515. This is an original pressing with the Lexington Avenue address, but it’s only in VG condition. The seller has a start price of about $200 and there are no bidders with a couple of days left. We’ve recently seen one of these sell for about $775 in better condition, of course, on the Jazz Collector Price Guide. One of the reasons we’re watching this: We have been going through our own collection deciding what to keep and what to sell. Some of the prices of the Blue Notes are higher than ever, so we’re considering dipping into the collection and picking out some choice items to post on eBay. This is one of the records we own, and we have a copy in extremely nice condition. If anyone out there wants to make an offer, we’re listening.

Here’s one of similar interest, for similar reasons:

Serge Chaloff, Blue Serge, Capitol 742. This one is in M- condition and it still has a couple of days to go. It features Sonny Clark on piano, and the Sonny Clark records have been selling for quite a premium. This one is at $100 with a couple more days to do. We’ll keep you posted on what happens with it.
The post A Few to Keep an Eye On first appeared on jazzcollector.com.
