On eBay: True Blue Returns & More

This one was on eBay, didn’t meet the seller’s reserve price, is back again and the reserve price has been me, to it will sell this time: Tina Brooks, True Blue, Blue Note 4041. The seller was smart not to sell it the first time, I guess. He got a top bid of around $2,300 the first time up and now the record is already at $2,650 with plenty of time to go. Perhaps the recent high price on the Hank Mobley Blue Note 1568 inspired either some collectors or investors. This one is in M- condition and it has shrink wrap on it, and the shrink wrap may even be original, who knows. It is just shrink wrap, however: You can’t put it on the turntable.

The same seller also has this: Cliff Jordan, Cliff Craft, Blue Note 1582. This is an original pressing. The vinyl is VG++ and the cover is VG+. The current price is about $600.

The seller Bullsite2000 is also back with some nice Blue Notes, including: Johnny Griffin, A Blowing Session, Blue Note 1559. This one is already more than $500 with several

Catching Up On Some Sweet Blue Notes

Here are a few more Blue Note 1500-series beauties we’ve been watching:

This one goes into the $1,000 bin: Lou Donaldson, Quartet, Quintet, Sextet, Blue Note 1537. This was an original Lexington Avenue pressing that was in M- condition all the way around. A real beauty. It sold for $1,880.55.

Lee Morgan, City Lights, Blue Note 1575. This was an original pressing. The vinyl was listed as VG++ and the cover was listed as VG+. The price was $850 and it had nearly 200 page views, which means a lot of people were at least considering a bid. I know I was.

Paul Chambers, Bass on Top, Blue Note 1569. This was also an original pressing, although the listing was a little weird, advertising it as Bone and Bari, the Curtis Fuller LP. Nonetheless, whatever record this turns out to be it was listed in VG++ condition and it sold for $790.

On eBay Now: Watching Some Blue Notes

Here are some interesting items on eBay now.

Here Comes Frank Foster, Blue Note 5043. This is an original 10-inch pressing from Euclid Records. The record is in M- condition and the cover is VG+. The price is around $235 with a few hours to go. This is another 10-inch LP from the same seller: Milt Jackson, Wizard of the Vibes, Blue Note 5011. This one is in M- condition for the vinyl and VG++ for the cover. The current price is about $190.

Heres another seller with some interesting items, including: Paul Chambers, Bass on Top, Blue Note 1569. This is an original West 63rd Street pressing. Based on the description it looks like the record is VG++ and the cover is VG+. The current price is close to $500. This seller has a bunch of collectibles closing today, many of which don’t have bids yet. Probably worth taking a look

Here’s some more jazz vinyl for the Jazz Collector Price Guide:

Sonny Rolins, Saxophone Colossus, Prestige 7079. This was an original New York pressing with the yellow label. Based on the description we would rate the vinyl as VG+ and the cover as VG+. Considering the overall condition, this one sold for a pretty hefty price tag: $1,705.

By comparison, based on the condition, we thought this might fetch a higher price: Cliff Jordan, Blue Note 1565. This was an original pressing in at least VG++ condition, perhaps M-, based on the description. We expected it to certainly break into the $1,000 bin, but it fell just short. It sold for $939.

Prestige Day At Jazz Collector

Let’s catch up on some of the Prestige jazz vinyl we’ve been watching on eBay:

Sonny Rollins, Moving Out, Prestige 7058. This was an original New York pressing. It was listed in VG++ condition for both the record and the cover and the seller has a good reputation. The price was $197.50. This one has Kenny Dorham and Thelonious Monk. We would have expected a higher price.

Webster Young, For Lady, Prestige 7106. This was an original New York pressing as well. The record was only VG, while the cover was M-. The price was $213.50.

A Few More Blue Notes For the $1,000 Bin

The $1,000 jazz vinyl bin got a little bit more crowded over the weekend. Here are some of the additions: Clifford Jordan, Cliff Craft, Blue Note 1582. This was an original pressing that was listed in EX+ condition, which we translate into what we would describe as VG++. This one was among the nice batch sold by the seller JazzRecordRevival, which did quite nicely with its bit auction. This one sold for $1,273.

Catching Up on Some More Blue Notes

We’ve been watching the Blue Notes carefully because the prices have jumped quite a bit recently. We’re always looking for trends. We thought we detected some softness the other day, but now we’re not so sure. Either way, the market on eBay always fluctuates a bit depending upon who’s bidding and who’s selling. Some sellers, because of presentation, packaging, credibility, always do better than others. Anyway, here are some recent Blue Note sales as tracked by Jazz Collector. See what you think.

Cliff Jordan, Blue Note 1565. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing. The record was at least VG+ and the cover was also VG+. The price was $760.

Miles Davis Volume 1, Blue Note 1501. This was an original Lexington Avenue pressing, from a reliable seller. The record was in M- condition for both the vinyl and the cover. The price was $517. Also, Miles Davis Volume 2, Blue Note 1502. This was also an original Lexington Avenue pressing from the same seller. It was also in M- condition all the way around, which is tough to find in these older Blue Notes, isn’t it? This one

A Weekend on eBay: Miles, Bud, PC & More

I’m heading up to the country for the weekend, but before I go I’ve found a few nice items to watch on eBay. There were the couple I mentioned yesterday on Jazz Collector — The Jutta Hipp on Blue Note as well as the Serge Chaloff — and here are a few more:

Miles Davis, Relaxin’, Prestige 7129. This is an original pressing with the New York labels. The record is in M- condition and the cover is VG++. Great record featuring John Coltrane and the classic Miles quintet from the ’50s. This one has a start price of about $135 and there are no bidders yet. It’ll be interesting to see if it sells. Our previous high price for this in the Jazz Collector Price Guide has been about $300.

Paul Chambers, Whims of Chambers, Blue Note 1534. This is an original pressing, but it’s in VG condition for both the record and the cover. A nice copy of this one recently sold for more than $1,000 on eBay. This one

For the $1,000 Bin: Jordan/Gilmore On Blue Note, Saxophone Colossus

It’s time to throw a few more items into the $1,000 bin. These are some of the rare jazz records that have recently crossed the $1,000 price threshold.

Cliff Jordan and John Gilmore, Blowin’ in From Chicago, Blue Note 1549. This was an an original pressing with the West 63rd Street address and deep groove. The record was listed in M- condition and the cover appeared to be at least VG+, perhaps better. The price was $1,199.99.

Sonny Rollins, Saxophone Colossus, Prestige 7079. This was an original pressing. The record was in VG++ condition and the cover was VG+. The price was $1,266.66. The item had more than 500 page views, compared to less than 200 for the Cliff Jordan/,John Gilmore LP. The seller, bobdjukik, seems to have a knack for getting people to view his records.

We’ve gotten so tied up in the J.R. Monterose stuff the past couple of days, we forgot to go back to eBay to catch up on all of those hot records we were watching last week. So we just took a look and, WOW! The prices are quite staggering, and we will be adding more records to the $1,000 bin — and $2,000 bin — and $3,000 bin — than we have ever previously added at one time. Here’s the list:

Dexter Gordon, Dexter Blows Hot and Cool, Dootone 207. This was an original pressing with the red vinyl. It was in M- condition, both the record and cover. It sold for $3,059. The seller was Herschel78, who had a bunch of hot records last week, a few more of which will appear in this post. I had tried to reach out to Herschel78 to find out more about these beautiful records, but he never replied. Perhaps I’ll try again.

Cliff Jordan, Cliff Craft, Blue Note 1582. This was an original pressing in M- condition, both record and cover. It sold for $2,303.

Cliff Jordan and John Gilmore, Blowing in From Chicago, Blue Note 1549. This was another original pressing in M- condition. It sold for $1,692. A second copy of this record, this one in VG+ condition for the record and the cover, sold for $676.
