Speaking of Miles, we’re also watching this: Miles Davis, Kind of Blue, Columbia 1355. This looks to be an original pressing with the rare

white promo label. This one is said to be in VG++ condition for both the record and the cover. The current price is about $200, with just a few more hours to go.

Hank Mobley With Donald Byrd and Lee Morgan, Blue Note 1540. This was a beauty: An original Lexington Avenue pressing with vinyl in M- condition and a VG++ cover. At 1540, Blue Note was nearing the ends of the Lexington Avenue addresses and this one is hard to find a an original. The final price was $1,616.

Here’s one we’re not familiar with, so any insight would be appreciated (Michel?): Georges Arvanitas Quintet, Soul Jazz, Columbia FPX 193. This was an original French pressing from 1960. The record was listed as M- and the cover was VG+. The price was $1,325.

There are two copies of Jackie McLean, Alto Madness, Prestige 7114. They are from different sellers and close at different times. This one is listed as VG for the record and VG+ for the cover. The current price is $42 with four bidders. The next one actually closes tomorrow. It is currently at about $100 and is listed in VG condition by the seller. 

Here’s a nice original mono pressing of Donald Byrd, Live at the Half Note Volume One, Blue Note 4060. This has the West 63rd street address. The vinyl looks to be VG++ and the cover VG++ as well. The current price is just $51. 

There’s a copy of Jazz at Massey Hall, Volume 3, Debut 2, which we’re watching because of the high start price. This is an original 10-inch pressing. The record and cover are both listed in VG+ condition. The start price is $200 and, as of now, there are no bidders. 

Finally, here’s one we don’t normally consider as a higher-end collectible, but this copy is fetching a pretty decent price: Miles Davis, Quiet Nights, Columbia 2106. This is an original mono pressing with the 2-eye logo. It is listed in M- condition, both record and cover. The current price is more than $50.  This copy will probably be the first version of this record to make it into the Jazz Collector Price Guide. 

Among some of the nice items that just sold today are:

Bud Powell, Bud!, Blue Note 1571. This was an original pressing. The record was M-, the cover was VG++, the price was $271.

Miles Davis, Kind of Blue, Columbia  8163. This was an original stereo pressing that sold for $328. The vinyl was M- and the cover was VG+. 

John Jenkins, Clifford Jordan and Bobby Timmons, Jenkins, Jordan and Timmons, New Jazz 8232. This was an original purple label pressing in VG++ condition, both cover and vinyl. Price: $153.50

Milt Jackson and the Thelonious Monk Quintet, Blue Note 1509. This was an original Lexington Avenue pressing. The record and cover were both in VG++ condition and the price was $227.50.

Finally, this beauty: Thelonious Monk, Brilliant Corners, Riverside 226. This was an original white label pressing in M- condition. The price was $421

From there I was interested in more Sonny but from a later period, and turned to Sonny Rollins, What’s New, RCA 2576, specifically If Ever I Would Leave you. Some great guitar by Jim Hall and very percussive Rollins. Did you know that this was the first album in the U.S. that featured the term Bossa Nova? From 1962, and the cover on my record actually as a stamp that states “Bossa Nova.” The liner notes describe “a new beat that will be heard often again as fresh elements continue to be absorbed into the ever-bubbling world of jazz.” The idea of something new and fresh got me thinking about Monk and now I’m listening to Thelonious Monk  Criss-Cross, Columbia 2038.  I know the Monk Prestiges, Blue Notes and Riversides are the collectibles, but for my money this is the Monk record I’d want if I was stuck on a desert Island and could only choose one. It’s from the mid-1960s and features Monk in a relaxed setting with his regular quartet of Charlie Rouse, Frankie Dunlop and John Ore. This album features a mix of Monk swingers, such as Hackensack and Rhythm-A-Ning, a beautiful version of Crepuscule  With Nellie and even a couple of standards, Don’t Blame Me and Tea for Two.

Ben Webster, The Consummate Artistry, Norgran 1001. When we first spotted this, it was at about $30 with just a few hours to go. It sold for $203.51. It was an original pressing in M-/VG++ condition.

Ornette Coleman, The Shape of Jazz to Come, Atlantic 1317. This was with the bulls-eye label in VG++/VG++ condition. It sold for $72.60

Miles Davis, Kind of Blue, Columbia 1355. This was a white label promo copy in VG+/VG++ condition. Price: $338

This one didn’t sell: The Three Sounds, Blue Note 1600. It was an original pressing, autographed by each of the members of the band and had a start price of just $45. Odd that no one wanted it, but it confirms our thought that collectors don’t seem to have as much interest in autographed records as one would suspect. Horace Silver, with Art Blakey and Sabu, Blue Note 1520. This was an original Lexington Avenue pressing in VG+/VG++ condition. This was the one from the collection of Donald Byrd. Price: $272

John Coltrane and Tadd Dameron, Mating Call, Prestige 7070. This was an original New York pressing in VG++/VG++ condition. Price: $272

Steve Lacy, Soprano Sax, Prestige 7125. This was an original New York pressing in VG+/M- condition. Price: $202.50 

Here’s another one that did not sell: Bennie Green, Soul Stirrin’, Blue Note 1599. The top bid was $154 and that did not meet the seller’s reserve price.

I said I liked the original Verves and I like the prices. Here are two nice examples, of great records for reasonable prices: Dizzy Gillespie with Sonny Rollins and Sonny Stitt, Sonny Side Up, Verve 8262. This was in M-/VG++ condition and sold for $77. Stan Getz, Award Winner, Verve 8296. This was in M-/V++ condition and sold for $48.95. Both records were original pressings with the trumpeter logo.

Red Garland, All Morning Long, Prestige 7130. This was an original pressing with the original cover in M-/VG+ condition. Price: $308.

Sonny Side Up, Dizzy Gillespie with Sonny Rollins and Sonny Stitt, Verve 8262. This is in nice condition and is currently at only $24.50. A nice Verve collectible, which will probably go for a reasonable price. It’s strange: I’ve had this record for maybe 30 years, and I just realized that it’s Sonny, with an “O” and not Sunny with a “U.” Definitely works better with the “O.”

Bennie Green, Soul Stirrin’, Blue Note 1599. This is a nice record. The saxophone player is listed as “Jug,” which we all know is Gene Ammons, who wasn’t on contract with Blue Note and had to use a pseudonym. This has 11 hours to go and is still at just 99 cents. Wonder why?

Steve Lacy, Soprano Sax, Prestige 7125. This is an original New York pressing, not in mint condition. Current price is around $125. 

John Coltrane and Tadd Dameron, Mating Call, Prestige 7070. This is also a New York pressing. The current price is $43. It will go for more than that.

Horace Silver with Art Blakey and Sabu, Blue Note 1520. This is from Atomic Records and, not only is it an original pressing, it is listed as coming from the collection of Donald Byrd, who is not on this album. The album is mostly a trio recording from 1952 and 1953, but there are also two tracks that feature just Blakey and Sabu, also from 1953. 

Here’s one I would think might generate some interest: The Three Sounds, Blue Note 1600.  This is an original pressing in VG/VG+ condition that is signed by Gene Harris, Andrew Simkins and Bill Dowdy and dated from 1959. It has a start price of $45 and currently had no bidders. 

And, finally, there’s this: A white-label, original mono promo copy of Miles Davis, Kind of Blue, Columbia 1355. Kind of Blue hasn’t always been a collectible, since there are a lot of copies in print, but these white-label monos are pretty rare and usually go for a decent price. We’ll see what happens with this one and follow up on it later in the week.

The seller Stereojacks has some nice items up today, including: Sonny Rollins, Way Out West, Contemporary 3530. 

The seller goodrecordsnyc has several Mosaic boxed sets, including: The Complete 1959 CBS Charles Mingus Sessions, Mosaic MQ4-143. This includes Mingus’ Columbia LPs, with classic tracks such as Goodbye Porkpie Hat, Better Git It in Your Soul and Fables of Faubus.

Another nice Jackie McLean LP: Jackie McLean, Jackie’s Bag, Blue Note 4051.

Here’s a 10-inch Miles Davis BLue Note: Miles Davis, Volume 3, Blue Note 5040.

A few weeks ago we saw an original pressing of Sonny’s Crib sell for $3,750. Here’s another copy: Sonny Clark, Sonny’ Crib, Blue Note 1576. This one is now at $530, but it hasn’t met the seller’s reserve price. This is one we’ll follow up on.

The seller Goldrecords has a batch of items, including another 10-inch Blue Note: Sal Salvador Quintet, Blue Note 5035.

Finally, here’s a Jackie McLean record that’s quite underpriced at the moment: Jackie McLean, Bluesnik, Blue Note 4067. This currently at $12.50 for an original pressing. The dealer rates the vinyl in M- condition, so we’ll see what happens.
