As you might expect on the day before Thanksgiving in the U.S., things are fairly light on eBay today. However, we are ever vigilant at Jazz Collector, so we’ve found a few items worth watching. And here they are: Thelonious Monk, Monk’s Music, Riverside 242. This is an original pressing with the white label. You may recall there was quite a stir on Jazz Collector several years ago, when an original copy of this record sold for more than $3,000. You can find the original article by doing a search on the site or just by clicking here. This one will not sell for $3,000, of that we can be sure. It is in VG+ condition and is currently priced at $177. From the same seller is this: Miles Davis, Workin’, Prestige 7166. This is an original New Jersey pressing. The record is M- and the cover is VG++. The current price is $152.50, which is somewhat higher than usual for this LP. Although it’s a great record and we wouldn’t begrudge anyone paying any amount for a near mint version. Finally, from the same seller is this: Thad Jones, Mad Thad, Period 1208. This is an original pressing. The record is M- and the cover is VG+. The current price is $300.

Here’s one with a cover we’ve always liked: When Farmer Met Gryce, Prestige 7085. This is an original New York pressing in decent shape. The record is VG and the cover is VG+. The current price is $89.88

Finally, here’s a collectible from the Epic label: The Magnificent Trombone of Curtis Fuller, Epic 16013. This is an original pressing. The vinyl is listed in M- condition and the cover is listed as VG+, although the picture shows a bit more ringwear than we’d like to see on a VG+ LP. Sometimes it’s just the light and the camera angle. This one is currently priced at $91.

We expect to post again before the Thanksgiving holiday, which, to our friends around the world is a time when we Americans gorge ourselves on turkey and stuffing and potatoes and pies and sit around and watch football for hours then come up for air and gorge ourselves some more, all in celebration of persecuted white people coming to this country so that they could have the freedom to persecute and oppress the people who already lived here. Only in America.

Prices: Sonny’s Crib, House of Blue Lights and More

Working today to update the Price Guide, and here are a bunch of the items I’m putting it. I’m not attaching links to any of these because they’ve all already appeared on the site. If you want to look at the record, just do a search and find the original post.

This one had the highest price of all the ones we’re entering: Sonny Clark, Sonny’s Crib, Blue Note 1576. This was an original pressing in VG++/VG+ condition. Price: $1,524.99

Eddie Costa, House of Blue Lights, Dot 3206. This was an original pressing in VG++/VG++ condition. Price: $355

Red Garland at the Prelude, Prestige 7170. This was an original pressing in M-/M- condition. Price: $79. This sold on another auction for $338.70 recently.

Lou Donaldson, Sonny Side Up, Blue Note 5036. This was an original pressing with the original cover in VG+/VG+ condition. Price: $156.10

Charlie Rouse, Yeah!, Epic 16012. This was in M-/VG++ condition and sold for $416.51.

Jackie McLean, Bluesnik, Blue Note 4067. This was a West 63rd pressing in M-/VG+ condition. Price: $236.06

Sal Salvador Quintet, Blue Note 5035. This was a 10-inch LP in M-/M- condition. Price> $129.62

Jackie McLean, Jackie’s Bag, Blue Note 4051. This was VG++/VG++ and sold for $169.

Charles Mingus, the Complete 1959 CBS Sessions, Mosaic MQ4-143. This was a 4-record boxed set and sold for $133.50

Mal Waldron, Mal-1, Prestige 7090. This was an original New York yellow label in VG++/VG++ condition. Price $455

Elmo Hope, Informal Jazz, Prestige 7043. This was an original pressing in M-/VG++ condition. Price: $997.97

Jerome Richardson, Midnight Oil, New Jazz 8205. This was a purple label original in M-/VG+ condition. Price: $224.50

Lester Young, Le Dernier Message, Barclay 84-009. This was in VG+/VG + condition. Price: $518

Barry Harris at the Jazz Workshop, Riverside 326. This was an original blue label pressing in M-/VG++ condition. Price: $190.50

Thelonious Monk, Monk’s Music, Riverside 242. This was an original white label pressing in VG++/VG+ condition. It sold for $117.50, quite a bit off the $3,000 previous high.

Gigi Gryce, When Farmer Met Gryce, Prestige 7085. This was an original New York yellow label in M-/M- condition. Price: $560

Charlie Parker, With Strings, Mercury 35010. This was a 10-inch LP in VG++/VG++ condition. Price: $383

Duke Pearson, Tender Feelin’s, Blue Note 4035. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing in M-/VG+ condition. Price: $610.07

Betty Bennett, Nobody Else But Me, Atlantic 1226. This was a black label in VG++/VG+ condition and it sold for $127.12

Bill Berry, For Duke, RealTime 101. This was M-/VG++. Price: $102.50

Sonny Rollins with the Modern Jazz Quartet, Prestige 7079. This was an original orange cover and New York label in VG+/VG+ condition. Price: $260

Frank Rosolino, I Play Trombone, Bethlehem 26. This was an original red label pressing in VG+/VG+ condition. Price: $137.50

Pepper Adams Plays the Music of Charles Mingus, Workshop 219. This was a stereo pressing in M-/VG+ condition. Price: $94.89

Lou Donaldson, Quartet, Quintet, Sextet, Blue Note 1537. This was a Lexington Avenue pressing in M-/VG condition. Price: $796

Freddie Hubbard, Open Sesame, Blue Note 4040. This was an original West 63rd pressing in VG++/VG+ condition. Price: $383

Jackie McLean, Jackie’s Pal, Blue Note 7068. This was an original New York yellow label in VG/VG+ condition. Price: $170.50

Sweets Edison, Sweets, Verve 8097. This had the trumpeter logo and was in M-/M- condition. Price: $44.49

Lester Young, Pres and Sweets, Norgran 1043. This was an original yellow-label pressing in M-/VG+ condition. Price: $230.50

John Coltrane with the Red Garland Trio, Prestige 7123. This was an original New York yellow label with the original cover in M-/VG condition. Price: $372.99

OK, I’ve fallen a bit behind on posting. Here are a few items to keep an eye on today. I’m also going to update the Price Guide with a bunch of new items, and clean out all of the items I’ve been watching, so stay tuned for some new posts and observations.

Charlie Rouse, Yeah!, Epic 16012. This is an original pressing with the yellow label. It is in M-/VG++ condition and is currently at a price of $355.

Lou Donaldson, Sunnyside Up, Blue Note 4036. This is an original pressing, with the original cover, in VG+ condition. Current price: $76

Red Garland and the Prelude, Prestige 7170. This is an original New Jersey yellow label in M-/M- condition. The current price is $16.50, with 20 hours or so to go. I recently put one of these into the price guide, for a price of $338.70.

Eddie Costa, House of Blue Lights, Dot 3206. This one looks to be in nice condition and is currently at $51, below the dealer’s reserve.

That’s kind of all I’m watching through mid-day tomorrow. It’s pretty slow.

Kind of Blue, The Collectible

It’s been a few days, so we’ll spend today catching you up on some of the interesting action we’ve been watching on eBay. Here goes:

Miles Davis, Kind of Blue, Columbia 1355, represents one of the defining jazz albums and now it is taking its place as a collectible of value as well. We’ve seen copies in nice condition begin selling in the $100 range earlier this year and now we have this copy breaking the $200 price barrier. It sold for $203.37.

Here’s a rare 10-inch LP sold this week by Atomic_Records: Beryl Booker, Dale 23. Price: $351

Here’s another 10-incher from Atomic_Records, but this one failed to meet its reserve price: Moondog and Friends, Epic 1002. High bid: $146.94

I used to be able to remember where and when I got every single record in my collection. However, now that the number has swelled to more than 10,000 and my age has swelled past 50, it’s not so easy anymore. I do remember getting a copy of this record, Abbey Lincoln, Straight Ahead, Candid 8015, for free. Years ago a colleague at work was throwing out a bunch of old records and knew I was a collector. Most of it was junk, but this LP, featuring Eric Dolphy, was sitting in the pile, and it was in great condition. It sold this week on eBay for $182.50.

Freddie Hubbard, Open Sesame, Blue Note 4040. Price: $1,590.50

Signed LPs By Phil Woods, Tal Farlow

Today we’ll spend a little time watching eBay.

Here are some of the interesting items from the past couple of days. I especially like the LPs autographed by Woods and Farlow, not just because of the signatures, which are cool, but also because the records seem to be in nice condition.

Phil Woods, Warm Woods, Epic 3436, in M- condition and autographed by Woods. Price: $395

Tal Farlow, Fascinatin’ Rhythm, Verve 8011, in M- condition and autographed by Tal. Price: $149.95

Here’s another interesting guitar collectible. I know there are stories out there about Dick Garcia, so maybe one of our guitar collectors can help us out. We have a Guitar Corner section in the Forums section of the Website, but so far the traffic’s been pretty light.

Dick Garcia, Message From Garcia, Dawn 1106. Seemed to be in VG/VG+ condition. Price: $101.99

Finally, there’s this item by Paul Chambers. I believe this is a reissue of the original LP on the Jazz West label, JWLP-7. It’s interesting that a reissue would sell for so much, although it is rare and it is sealed.

Paul Chambers, A Jazz Delegation from the East, Score 4033. This LP was sealed. Price: $224.50

And last but not least, here’s a Japanese reissue of an Argo LP. Perhaps one of our readers can tell us the story behind this record and what makes it so collectible. You don’t often see reissues selling for such high prices.
