We were talking last week about albums featuring Bill Evans as a sideman. Well here’s one of the very early ones, for sale now on eBay: Lucy Reed, The Singing Reed, Fantasy 3-212. This looks to be an original pressing. The record looks to be in VG++ condition and the cover looks more like VG. The listing doesn’t mention the presence of Evans as a sideman, which would certainly attract bidders: However, the start price of $150 is pretty high, which might be a deterrent. We’ll see if it sells.

As Rudolf notes in the Reader Forum, there are a bunch of records now from the seller bobdjukic, who has been noted here at Jazz Collector many times for his hyperbole and his ability to get people to bid astronomical prices for his records. Here’s one that I have always assumed was a pretty routine record, but after reading his description even I begin to wonder:

Billie Holiday, Lady in Satin, Columbia 8048. This is a stereo pressing, which, according to the seller, seems to make it a big deal because there was an extra song printed on the cover. I’ve seen many copies of this record, mono and stereo, and never gave it much thought. Perhaps I should think again. This one is already at nearly $300 and there are still three days to go. There’s also this one: Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, Midnight Session, Elektra 120. This is a mono pressing and it’s already at $100. The appeal seems to be the difference between the mono a stereo covers. Ah well.
The post Jazz Vinyl on eBay: Evans The Sideman, Lady Day first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

It’s a little scary when the auctions of bobdjukic, which are getting quite a lot of attention from some of our commentators, are fetching higher prices than those of Jazz Record Center or Euclid. But that’s life on eBay, which tends to be a great equalizer. Anyway, both JRC and Euclid had some auctions close yesterday, with some interesting items, including: Miles Davis, ‘Round About Midnight, Columbia 949. This was an original mono pressing with the white promo label from Jazz Record Center. The record was in M- condition and the cover was at least a VG++. This one sold for $291. This is another case where I believe the promo label actually helped to boost the sale price.

This beauty was sold by Euclid Records: Ernie Henry, 7 Standards and a Blues, Riverside, Riverside 248. This was an original blue label pressing in near mint condition for both the cover and the vinyl. The price was $564.32. I think that sets a record for this LP, but

how do you put a price on such pristine condition? I do have a question: Does anyone know exactly at which point Riverside switched from white labels to blue? It’s sometime in the 240s, but I’m not quite sure which record marks the switching point. This was another gem from Euclid: The Brew Moore Quintet, Fantasy 3-222. This was an original red label pressing in M- condition for both the vinyl and the cover. The price was $304.
The post Catching Up: Miles, Ernie Henry, Brew Moore first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

Here are some of the items we at Jazz Collector are watching on eBay today:

The previously mentioned Euclid Records has a few nice items up today, including Charlie Mariano Sextet, Fantasy 3-10. This is a 10-inch LP in M- condition. The current price is $76.

Here’s another one for the $1,000 record bin, or perhaps even the $2,000 bin: Thelonious Monk, Prestige 7053. This is the one with the cover design by Andy Warhol. The record is only in VG condition and the cover is VG+, yet the price is already at $1,775. The same seller has another Warhol cover: Artie Shaw, Both Feet in the Groove, RCA 1201. This is an original pressing and it looks to be in at least VG+ condition. The current price is $71.

Finally, here’s a pretty Norgran currently in the $50 price range: Johnny Hodges, Ellingtonia ’56, Norgran 1055. This one is in what looks like VG++/VG+ condition.
The post Today on eBay, Feb. 2, 2009 first appeared on jazzcollector.com.
