This week’s theme: Sarah Vaughan Centennial. Featured artists include Sarah Vaughan, Clifford Brown, Cannonball Adderly, Paul Quinichette, Clark Terry, Jimmy Jones, John Malachi, Joe Benjamin, Roy Haynes, Richie Powell, Herbie Manne, Bill Eckstine, Ernie Wilkins, Wendell Cullen, Frank Wess, and more.

John Coltrane, Tenor Conclave, Prestige 7074. Notice how I listed this as a John Coltrane record. It is actually one of those Prestige jam sessions featuring Coltrane along with Hank Mobley, Al Cohn and Zoot Sims. So Why do I think of it as a Coltrane record? Because that’s where I place it within my collection, under the Coltranes. Where else would you put it? Mobley aficionados aside, Coltrane is the one transformational musician in that group, aside from being, by far, my favorite tenor play among the four of them. So, to me, it’s always been a Coltrane record, and one I am quite happy to own.  This one was in M- condition for the record and probably VG+ or VG++ for the cover. It sold for $350. A bargain for someone, IMHO. This one falls into the same category: John Coltrane, Wheelin’ and Dealin’, Prestige 7131. This one features Coltrane along with Frank Wess and Paul Quinichette. For me, it’s a Coltrane record. This one was in VG+ condition for the record and the cover and sold for $263. Wonder what prices they would be selling for if they were on Blue Note? Double that? Triple?

And now some Blue Notes:

Jutta Hipp, Jutta, Blue Note 5056. This is an original 10-inch pressing. The listing was a little weird. At one point the seller describes it as near mint for the record, at another it is described as VG+. The cover was VG+. The price was 449.

Pete La Roca, Basra, Blue Note 4205. This was an original New York USA pressing that looked to be in probably VG++ condition for the record and the cover. It sold for $353.88.

John Coltrane with the Red Garland Trio, Prestige 7123. This was an original pressing with the original cover (the second pressing on this is Traneing In). The record was M- and the cover was VG+ and the price was $660. We’ve watched this one many times in the Jazz Collector Price Guide and it never surpassed $400. Quite a change. I’ve been cataloguing my records for insurance purposes and I had this one at $300. Guess I’ll have to change that.

This one also seemed to hit a new high: Olio, Prestige 7084, with Thad Jones, Frank Wess, Teddy Charles, Elvin Jones, Mal Waldron and Doug Watkins. This one was in M- condition all the way around and sold for $504.

Elmo Hope, Informal Jazz, Prestige 7043. This was an original pressing that looked to be close to M- and probably in VG++ condition for both the record and the cover. It sold for a hefty $898. Did I write last week that this might be the second cover? Can anybody figure out what I was thinking, because I can’t? Sometimes the fingers move quicker than the brain.

Three Trumpets, Prestige 7092, Donald Byrd, Art Farmer, Idrees Sulieman. This one looked to be M- for the vinyl and VG++ for the cover. The price was $232.28. Of a similar vintage was this: Two Trumpets, Prestige 7062, Art Farmer, Donald Byrd. This one was in M- condition for the vinyl and VG+ for the cover. The price was similar to Three Trumpets: $236. Guess the additional trumpet player didn’t matter.

Dorothy Ashby and Frank Wess, In A Minor Groove, New Jazz 8209. We saw a copy of this sell for about $150 a few weeks ago and figured we’d give ours a shot.  So far this one has no bids at $30 with just a few hours to go. If it doesn’t sell, we’ll be happy to keep it: We were quite ambivalent about selling it in the first place.  There aren’t that many jazz harp LPs to begin with, and this is a good one.

Thelonious Monk, Monk’s Moods, Prestige 7159. This one is similar to the Early Miles LP we also have up on eBay now. It’s an early reissue of classic music, with nice packaging and it’s part of the early yellow-label Prestige catalogue. As we had mentioned last week,

we once had the goal of owning the entire catalogue of Yellow Prestiges, or at least those in the 7000 and 7100 series, but we gave up on that, thank goodness, in a rare moment of sanity. In any case, we have the earlier original pressing of this and we are hoping to sell this copy to someone looking for the music or someone still seeking the fantasy of Prestige catalogue completion. After you look at these, please take a look at our other auctions this week: We have a lot of items and many of them seem to be selling for quite reasonable prices at this stage.

Our friends at Euclid Records also have some nice items this week, including:

Jackie McLean, Jackie’s Bag, Blue Note 4051. This is an original pressing in VG++ condition for both the record and the cover. The price is now in the $175 range with one day left, so we’ll expect it to sell for a bit more than that. Also from Euclid: J.R. Monterose, Blue Note 1536. This is an original Lexington Avenue pressing. The record is listed as VG++ and the cover is VG+. The current price is about $350.

Also active on eBay this week is Atomic Records, which has this one, among others: Bill Evans, Waltz for Debby, Riverside 9399. This is an original black label stereo pressing. The record is in VG+ or VG++ condition, but the seller says there is some surface noise. The cover is VG. The price is about $150. With all of these sellers, it makes sense to click on the links here and then look at the seller’s other items when you get there, because there are some other very nice record available this week from all of them.
