Herbie Nichols Trio on Blue Note: The Winner Is . . .

Okay, time to announce the winner of our latest contest to give away a jazz collectible. This one is: Herbie Nichols Trio, Blue Note 1519. This is a vinyl reissue from, I think, the mid-1980s, issued by Pathe Marconi in France. The record and the cover are in M- condition and the music is mint-plus. It features Max Roach on drums, plus Al McKibbon or Teddy Kotick on bass. As always, we have one copy to give away and we are giving it to someone who has commented on the Jazz Collector site during the past two weeks. Now that we’ve given away the Billie Holiday record it is time to turn our attention to the next contest. As mentioned, we decided to go through the collection we purchased the other night to come up with something worthy. There were many candidates, and the one we chose is this: Herbie Nichols Trio, Blue Note 1519. This is a French reissue of this classic Blue Note LP featuring Nichols on piano with Max Roach on drums and either Al McKibbon or Teddy Kotick on bass. We can safely give this one away since the one in our collection is a Lexington Avenue pressing. As always with these contests, the goal is to encourage people to comment on the Jazz Collector site. Here’s an update on some of the jazz vinyl we’ve been watching here at Jazz Collector. We sense a slight softness in the market the past couple of weeks compared with the end of the summer, when prices seemed to be skyrocketing. This sense comes not only from what we are watching, but from what we are selling as well. These things go back and forth all the time, so we don’t see much use in trying to time the market as a seller, but for buyers, this might be a time to be active. Prices surely will go up again if past is prologue to the future. Here are a few recent sales:

Kenny Drew, This is New, Riverside 236. This was an original white label pressing. The record was listed as VG++ and the cover was VG+. The price was $125. This one features Hank Mobley and Donald Byrd and is quite a nice collectible — and quite a bit cheaper than comparable Blue Notes of the same era with the same artists.

Time again to catch up on adding some new items to the Jazz Collector Price Guide. Here are a few of the records we’ll be adding.

Paul Chambers, Whims of Chambers, Blue Note 1569. This was an original pressing with the West 63rd Street address. The record was VG++ and the cover was VG+. The price was $660.

John Coltrane, Lush Life, Prestige 7188. This was an original pressing with the yellow label and New Jersey address. It was in M- condition, both record and cover. The price was $274.99

Yusef Lateef, Prayer to the East, Savoy 12117. This was a second pressing with the maroon label. The record was M- and the cover was VG++. It sold for $255. This is the second time we’ve seen a maroon pressing of this sell for well more than $100. Is there something about this record we don’t know?

Catching Up With Some Interesting Collectibles

Here are some interesting results from some records we’ve been watching on eBay:

Red Garland, All Kinds of Weather, Prestige 7148. This is an original yellow label pressing with the New Jersey address in M- condition. Price: $385. I’ve never quite figured out which Red Garland records sell for the highest prices, and why. So, if anyone out there has the answer, please post a comment.

Here’s an interesting one: Paul Chambers, Whims of Chambers, Blue Note 1534. What’s interesting is that this was not an original pressing: The original pressing on this has the Lexington Avenue address, and this copy had the West 63rd street address. So it was not original and it was only in VG condition, yet it still sold for $124.50.

Ben Webster, Soulville, Verve 8274. This was an original pressing with the trumpeter logo in M- condition and sold for $190.09. That’s a pretty nice price for a Ben Webster on Verve. This was sold by

Some Hot LPs For the Weekend

When we were doing the jazz blog regularly back in 2004 and 2005, we would often look ahead to give our readers a peak at some of the interesting upcoming items on eBay, particularly heading into a weekend, when a lot of people are perhaps off doing other things. This is a tradition we’ll try to resurrect as we begin blogging regularly again. So, here are a few items and sellers to look at this weekend. Jazz Collector Newsletter, June 2002

We have some positive changes coming at Jazz Collector. We’re updating the Jazzcollector.com Web site and starting Monday we’ll be posting new items each weekday. Plus, we’ll be giving away free collectibles from the site periodically. Finally, we’re going to post more articles and commentaries from readers and increase activity on the site’s Forum. The hope is to create a hub for the Jazz Collector community, so please use the site and offer up any suggestions. The site upgrade won’t affect the newsletter, which will still come out once a month. We have more than 800 subscribers now and the roster keeps growing. Obviously, jazz vinyl is alive and well.
