This week’s theme: Sonny Rollins plays the compositions of Sonny Rollins. Musicians include Sonny Rollins, Max Roach, Clifford Brown, George Morrow, Richie Powell, Art Blakey, JJ Johnson, Horace Silver, Paul Chambers, Red Garland, Philly Joe Jones, Kenny Burrell, Jim Hall, Bob Cranshaw, George Cables, Tommy Flanagan, Arthur Taylor, Miles Davis, Percy Heath, Kenny Clarke, and many more.

There were some nice 10-inch LPs in that auction as well, including The Eminent J.J. Johnson, Volume 2, Blue Note 5057. This looked to be in M- condition for the record and at least VG++ for the cover. It sold for $750. Also Julius Watkins Sextet, Blue Note 5053. This also looked to be in M- condition for the record and probably VG++ for the cover. The final price was $565. And The Cool Britons, New Sounds From Olde England, Blue Note 5052. This looked to be in M- condition all around, record and cover. The final price was $260. Guess the Britons weren’t quite as cool as the Americans.

I had my eye on this one from a Brazilian seller and I’m surprised it didn’t sell: Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, Blue Note 4003.This looked to be an original pressing in VG+ condition for the record and Ex- for the cover. It seems to have an Art Blakey signature from 1977. The ask price was $350.

And finally for today there was Sonny Clark, Leapin’ and Lopin’, Blue Note 4091. This was an original Mono pressing that looked to be in VG++ condition for the record and VG+ condition or better for the cover. It sold for $660. A far cry – with a nod to Mr. Dolphy – from the $7,300 price tag from last year (Leapin’, Lopin’ and Lunacy), and did any of us confirm whether that particular sale actually went through?

We were also watching a bunch of auctions from the seller vinyl.unlimited and most of them got fairly decent bids but did not reach the seller’s reserve price. Here are some of the ones that did not sell:

Barney Wilen Quintet, Guilde du Jazz 1239. This was listed in VG++ condition for the record and the cover. The top bid was $810.

Lou Donaldson, Lou Takes Off, Blue Note 1591. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing listed in VG++ condition for the record and VG+ for the cover. This one had a top bid of $404.

Sonny Red, Out of the Blue, Blue Note 4032. This was in VG++ condition for the record and probably VG+ for the cover. The top bid was $755.

Kenny Drew, Undercurrent, Blue Note 4059. The top bid for this was $1,325 and it still didn’t meet the reserve price.

Johnny Griffin, The Congregation, Blue Note 1680. This one also received a top bid of more than $1,000 — $1,025 to be precise — and did not meet the reserve price.

Ella Fitzgerald, Sunshine of Your Love, Prestige 7685. Sealed, $274.

Illinois Jacquet, Birthday Party, JRC-11434. Sealed, promo, $251.50.

Vince Guaraldi, A Charlie Brown Christmas, Fantasy 5019. Promo, $232.50.

Duke Ellington, Max Roach, Charles Mingus, Money Jungle, Solid State 18022. Reissue, promo, $231.

There are so many more, it’s hard to fathom: Sergio Mendes for more than $200; Getz-Gilberto for more than $200; JJ. Johnson, Proof Positive on Impulse for more than $200; Ella Fitzgerald on Pablo (with a cutout clip to boot) for $184.

I could go on all day. Look for yourself. I think we have ventured into a new paradigm. Perhaps the emergence of the celebrity collector. Or a world in which sealed records and shrink wrap, no matter what the record, are a thing. Beats the hell out of me.

Roy Haynes with Booker Ervin, Cracklin’, New Jazz 8286. This seems to be an original pressing, although it has one side that is a deep groove and one that isn’t. What do you make of that? The record is in M- condition and the cover is VG+. The price is in the $140 range and I’m assuming it is an original unless I hear otherwise.

I almost bid on this one and now kind of regret that I didn’t:

Jay Jay Johnson, Blue Note 5028. This was an original 10-inch pressing with a great cover and great music featuring Clifford Brown. It was in VG condition for the record and the cover and sold for the start price of $89.99. It would be nice to have that one on the shelf, even in VG condition.

This one was described in “like new” condition and, based on the picture and description, it looked like an original pressing: Sonny Clark, Sonny’s Crib, Blue Note 1576. The seller said he turned down a “buy now” request and let the bidding continue, which it did, topping off at $1,713.

This one wasn’t in nearly the same condition as Sonny’s Crib: Lee Morgan, Candy, Blue Note 1590. This looked to be an original pressing and it was listed in VG+ condition for the record and VG MINUS for the cover. It sold for $1,115.

This is the highest price we’ve ever seen for this record: Miles Davis, Cookin’ Prestige 7094. This was an original pressing that was listed in M- condition for both the record and the cover. It sold for $665.

How about a few records with Andy Warhol covers:

Johnny Griffin, The Congregation, Blue Note 1580. This was an original pressing that was listed in VG++ condition for the the record and the cover, although a previous buyer wrote his name on both labels. The price was $724. JJ Johnson, Kai Winding and Bennie Green, Trombone by Three, Prestige 4. This is the 16-RPM record, a copy of which recently sold for $2,000 in VG condition for the cover and G for the record. This was in M- condition for both the record and the cover. It sold for $1,425. On eBay, as in life, timing is everything. Kenny Burrell, Blue Note 1543. This one was tough to judge because the seller didn’t have experience selling record. He kept using the language “very good” and perhaps he meant to say it was in what we could consider to be VG condition, or perhaps that was just a generic description and the record was actually in better condition. I think it was in better than VG condition and so did the eventual buyer: It sold for $800.

Here’s another jazz record with a cover by Andy Warhol: Conte Candoli, Cool Gabriels, Groove 1003. I have to admit, this is one I’ve never seen before. The record was in VG++ condition and the cover was VG++ as well. The price for this one was also $2,000.

Since we’re already in the $2,000 bin, here’s one more:

Bent Axen, Jazz Quintet 60, Metronome MLP 15124. This was an original Danish pressing and it was listed in VG++ condition for both the record and the cover. It sold for $2,015.

Miles Davis All Stars Volume 2, Prestige 200. This looks to be an original pressing with the yellow label, probably one of the first Prestiges to have the famous yellow label. The record was listed in VG++ condition and the cover was VG+. The price was $204.50.

I think this was the first LP issued by Blue Note: Mellow The Mood, Blue Note 5001. It features Ike Quebec, Benny Morton, Buck Clayton and others. The record was VG and the cover was VG++. You’d think it would fetch a high price just for the historic value. But, alas, this copy did not: It sold for $28.

I’ve never seen this one and it has quite a cool cover: Bill Jennings/Leo Parker Quintet, Billy in the Lion’s Den, King 527. This was listed in VG condition for both the record and the cover. It sold for $81.

Hard to find this one in M- condition, but here was a copy: Gerry Mulligan Quartet, With Chet Baker, Pacific Jazz 5. It sold for $115.52.

And now for some 10-inch Blue Notes:

Hank Mobley Quartet, Blue Note 5066. We’ve seen this one fetch some high prices lately, but this seems a little ridiculous: The record was in VG- condition, which means barely playable, and the cover was VG+. It sold for $510. Tal Farlow Quartet, Blue Note 5042. This was an original pressing in VG+ condition for the record and VG++ for the cover. It sold for $140.26.  Gigi Gryce/Clifford Brown Sextet, Blue Note 5048. This was in VG condition for the record and the cover and sold for $249.50. Lou Donaldson, New Faces, New Sounds, Blue Note 5021. This was in VG+ condition for both the record and the cover. It sold for $151.50. Jay Jay Johnson, Blue Note 5028. This one was in VG+ condition for the record and VG++ for the cover. It sold for $170. Finally there was Clifford Brown, New Star on the Horizon, Blue Note 5032. The vinyl was listed in VG++ condition and the cover was listed in in VG++ condition as well, although there seemed to be clear damage to the cover in the picture, if you check out the link. I would have been wary looking at the picture, but the winning bidder was not: This one sold for $468.
