Is this yet another copy of Tommy Flanagan Overseas, Prestige 7134 from Atomic Records? Someone mentioned that they had seen feedback on the previous listing, so the assumption that this is a second copy. Hard to believe. It took me 42 years to find one copy, and they end up with two. This one was in M- condition for the record and VG++ for the cover. It sold for $2,850.

John Jenkins with Kenny Burrell, Blue Note 1573. This looked to be an original West 63rd Street deep groove pressing. The record was in VG+ condition and so was the cover. The price was $676.66.

Jackie McLean, A Fickle Sonance, Blue Note 4089. This was an original mono pressing in M- condition for both the record and the cover. It sold for $338.

This one did not sell and has been relisted:

Ken McIntyre, Looking Ahead, New Jazz 8247. This was an original pressing with the deep grooves and the purple labels. It was listed in VG+ condition for both the record and the cover. This also features Eric Dolphy, so I always assume it is desired by collectors. This one failed to get a bid at a start price of $99.

Thought you would never ask.

Hank Mobley, Blue Note 1568. This was an original pressing of one of the rarest and most valuable of all jazz records and it was sold by the most reputable of all jazz sellers, the Jazz Record Center in New York. The record was in M- condition and the cover looked like VG++. We’ve seen this record sell for more than $5,000 in the past on the Jazz Collector Price Guide. Not this time. This one sold for a mere $3,362.

Presenting Ernie Henry, Riverside 222. This was also from the Jazz Record Center and it was an original white label pressing that looked to be in quite lovely condition, M- for both the record and the cover. This one sold for $510. Great cover, isn’t it? Perfection, really, with the great picture and his eyes closed and the scripted typeface with the finger pointing to Ernie. Love it. Great record too.

This seller had a few interesting records from the Prestige New Jazz label, including:

The Music of Ahmed Abdul-Malik, New Jazz 8266. This was an original deep groove pressing with the purple labels. It was listed in VG+ condition for both the record and cover and sold for $447, which seemed quite high to me. I have a Riverside record by Abdul-Malik with Johnny Griffin and I’ve had this record in the past but I have to admit I never listened to either. Perhaps I will change that later this weekend and put the Riverside on the turntable.

From the same seller was: Ken McIntyre, Looking Ahead with Eric Dolphy, New Jazz 8247. This was also an original pressing with the deep grooves and purple labels. It was also in VG+ condition. It sold for $122.50. Funny, I’d have expected the record with Dolphy to fetch a higher price than the Adbul-Malik record, but it wasn’t even close.

First, to eBay:

Ken McIntyre, Looking Ahead, New Jazz 8247. This was an original pressing with the purple label and the deep grooves. It was in beautiful M- condition. The record features Eric Dolphy as well and the seller listed Dolphy first. That was probably a wise decision. This one sold for $260.

This one was from the same era, with a very similar framed cover: Benny Golson, Gone With Golson, New Jazz 8235. This was

also a deep groove purple label and it also looked to be in beautiful M- condition. It sold for $228.50.
The post New Jazz, New Heights first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

Let’s catch up on a few odds and ends in the world of collectible jazz vinyl:

The Blue Notes continue to be getting top dollar, but there seems to be a drop-off in prices in the middle of the market, records that would normally sell in the $30-$150 range. I’ve noticed it with my own sales on eBay and I was talking with Steve at Round Again Records in Providence yesterday and he said he believes the market has fallen off by as much as 40 percent in the past couple of years. I was thinking about that when I looked at some of the records I’ve been watching on eBay that failed to get bids, despite what seemed to be reasonable starting prices. Here are a few:

Kenny Drew and his Progressive Piano, Norgran 1066. This was an original pressing from a reputable seller. The record was in nice condition, M-/VG++ and the cover seemed nice as well with a partial seam split. The start price was $74.99 and there were no bidders. The picture accompanying the listing wasn’t great and perhaps that dampened the enthusiasm.

Ken McIntyre, Looking Ahead, New Jazz 8247. This was an original pressing with the purple labels and the deep grooves. The record and cover were in VG+ condition and the start price was $99.99. This record, which prominently features Eric

Dolphy, musically and on the cover as well, would have fetched that price, or more, in the past, but not this week. In fact, if you look at the listing this record was only viewed 16 times. Quite unusual.

We’ve seen this one fail to sell at two price points, much to our surprise both times: The Dual Role of Bob Brookmeyer, Prestige 7066. This is an original New York yellow label pressing and it is listed in M- condition for both the vinyl and the cover. The first time we watched this it failed to get a bid at $99 now and another seller has listed it and failed to get any action at $79.90. The second time around it got six views. How is that possible, only six views? Actually, I have a theory about that. Stay tuned for our next post.
The post Tracking Rare Jazz Vinyl That Didn’t Sell first appeared on jazzcollector.com.
