Bethlehem Beauties, Blue Note, Warhol (Again)

Here’s some of the jazz vinyl we’re watching on eBay.

Let’s start with a couple from the Bethlehem label, which doesn’t always get a lot of attention here: Mal Waldron, Left Alone, Bethlehem 6045. This is an original pressing. The vinyl is VG++ and the cover is only VG. The current price is a little over $300 and there are still 10 hours to go on the auction. This next one is a little tough to figure: Charles Rouse and Paul Quinichette, the Chase is On, Bethlehem 6021. I love this record, but this is a stereo pressing with a blue label. Can’t imagine this was issued the same time as the mono pressing, so it much be a later pressing, right, even if it is the first stereo issue?  In any case this stereo pressing is listed in M- condition for the record and VG++ for the cover. It’s closing later today and is in the $150 price range so far.

Here’s a Stanley Turrentine Blue Note doing quite well:

For the Price Guide: Webster Young, Trane, Hank

We haven’t been keeping up with the Jazz Collector Price Guide as often as we’d like, but we have a few items we’ve been watching that we’ll enter this weekend. If we get moving, we could get up to 4,000 records into the database within the next couple of weeks, which would be something of a milestone. Anyway, here are a few we’ve been watching:

Webster Young, For Lady, Prestige 7106. I’ve always loved this record, some great tenor playing by Paul Quinichette. This one was in VG+ condition, both record and cover, and sold for $296.

John Coltrane, Ballads, Impulse 32. This was an original mono pressing with the orange label and the gatefold cover. It was in M- condition, both record and cover. It sold for $113.50.

Hank Mobley, Roll Call, Blue Note 4058. This was a nice original pressing with the West

Today on eBay, January 14, 2009

Yet another slow day on eBay today. It’s interesting because prices remain high, but the number of listings for high-end collectibles has been slow for at least a week now. Perhaps it’s just an aberration. We’ll keep watching at Jazz Collector to see how long it lasts and see if there’s anything more than coincidence to it. Perhaps it’s a rare chance to pick up a bargain or two, based on a few of the items we’re watching, such as:

Donald Byrd, Off To The Races, Blue Note 4007. This looks to be an original pressing. The picture shows a West 63rd Street address on the label, but it shows only one side. Also, the seller doesn’t actually grade the condition of the record, but, based on his description, it looks to be at least VG+, perhaps better. So maybe this will be a bargain for someone. It is now priced at $33.76.  In the Jazz Collector Price Guide, we’ve monitored this record at around $125 in this condition and as high as $344 in M- condition.

We’ve always like the cover of this next one, with a caveat:
