Here’s some of the jazz vinyl we’re watching on eBay.

Let’s start with a couple from the Bethlehem label, which doesn’t always get a lot of attention here: Mal Waldron, Left Alone, Bethlehem 6045. This is an original pressing. The vinyl is VG++ and the cover is only VG. The current price is a little over $300 and there are still 10 hours to go on the auction. This next one is a little tough to figure: Charles Rouse and Paul Quinichette, the Chase is On, Bethlehem 6021. I love this record, but this is a stereo pressing with a blue label. Can’t imagine this was issued the same time as the mono pressing, so it much be a later pressing, right, even if it is the first stereo issue? In any case this stereo pressing is listed in M- condition for the record and VG++ for the cover. It’s closing later today and is in the $150 price range so far.

Here’s a Stanley Turrentine Blue Note doing quite well:

Stanley Turrentine, Up at Minton’s Volume 1, Blue Note 4069. This seems to be an original pressing. It has the ear in the deadwax and it has the West 63rd address, but those do not look like deep grooves on the label. I don’t have Fred Cohen’s Blue Note book here: Should this be deep groove, or is it past the point of deep groove? The price on this one is nearly $180 already.

And once again here is Conte Candoli, Cool Gabriels, Groove 1003. I went decades having never seen this record and now there seems to be at least one a week on eBay. This one is in nice condition and the price is still low: The record and cover are at least VG++, perhaps nicer, and the price is just in the $225 range for now. By contrast, Rudolf’s copy last week finally sold for $1,724. This one, of course, has the cover by Andy Warhol which is the reason it is of such high value.
The post Bethlehem Beauties, Blue Note, Warhol (Again) first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

If we get moving, we could get up to 4,000 records into the database within the next couple of weeks, which would be something of a milestone. Anyway, here are a few we’ve been watching:

Webster Young, For Lady, Prestige 7106. I’ve always loved this record, some great tenor playing by Paul Quinichette. This one was in VG+ condition, both record and cover, and sold for $296.

John Coltrane, Ballads, Impulse 32. This was an original mono pressing with the orange label and the gatefold cover. It was in M- condition, both record and cover. It sold for $113.50.

Hank Mobley, Roll Call, Blue Note 4058. This was a nice original pressing with the West

63rd Street address. The record was M- and the cover was VG++. The price was $677.

Grant Green, Green Street, Blue Note 4071. This was a New York USA pressing. The record was M- and the cover was VG+. The price was $304. I have a question on this one: I know that 4071 was right at the cusp of when Blue Note switched from the West 63rd Street address to New York USA. Does anything know whether this record was issued with a West 63rd Street address? If you have the answer, just post it as a comment here. Thanks.
The post For the Price Guide: Webster Young, Trane, Hank first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

Yet another slow day on eBay today. It’s interesting because prices remain high, but the number of listings for high-end collectibles has been slow for at least a week now. Perhaps it’s just an aberration. We’ll keep watching at Jazz Collector to see how long it lasts and see if there’s anything more than coincidence to it. Perhaps it’s a rare chance to pick up a bargain or two, based on a few of the items we’re watching, such as:

Donald Byrd, Off To The Races, Blue Note 4007. This looks to be an original pressing. The picture shows a West 63rd Street address on the label, but it shows only one side. Also, the seller doesn’t actually grade the condition of the record, but, based on his description, it looks to be at least VG+, perhaps better. So maybe this will be a bargain for someone. It is now priced at $33.76. In the Jazz Collector Price Guide, we’ve monitored this record at around $125 in this condition and as high as $344 in M- condition.

We’ve always like the cover of this next one, with a caveat:

Lester Young and Paul Quinichette, Pres Meets Vice-Pres, Emarcy 26021. This is a 10-inch LP. The caveat I have is that it is quite misleading — Pres and Quinichette don’t actually play together. The LP is just a compilation of 78s, with Pres on one side and Quinichette on the other. It would have been great to have a recording of them actually playing together, but I don’t think that exists. Anyway, this record is marginal as a collectible. This one seems to be in nice condition and is priced now at $17.

Another potential bargain is: Babs Gonzales, Tales of Manhattan, Jaro JAM 5000. This looks to be an original pressing in VG+ condition, both cover and vinyl. The current price is $10.49. In the Jazz Collector Price Guide, we’ve seen this sell for anywhere between $75 and $150.
The post Today on eBay, January 14, 2009 first appeared on jazzcollector.com.
