This is a deep groove pressing with two different labels: One has the New York 23, the other doesn’t. What does that make this? A very early second pressing? This one is in VG++ condition for the record and probably VG+ for the cover, based on the seller’s description. The auction closes in about four hours and, so far, there are no bids with a start price in the $550 range. I know the seller is a reader of Jazz Collector, so, if it doesn’t sell and you want to make a trade, you know where to find me.

We thought this one would end up in the $2,000 bin, but it came up just short: Lee Morgan Sextet, Blue Note 1541. This was an original Lexington Avenue pressing in M- condition for the record and VG++ for the cover. Very nice. It sold for $1,845.

Here’s another that may not sell: Sonny Rollins Plays, Period 1204. This is an original deep groove pressing. The record and the cover are both listed in VG+ condition. The start price is around $500 and so far there are no takers with four days to do.

This one did not sell and has been relisted:

Al Cohn Quintet With Bob Brookmeyer, Coral 57118. This is an original pressing in what looks to be the original shrink wrap, with a discount price sticker offering the record a the reduced rate of $1.17. Ah, that would be nice to walk into a store and find a record like this for $1.17. This one, in VG+ condition for the record and M- for the cover, was offered at a start price of $79.99, but did not sell. It is now offered for a price just $5 less, closing in three days.

Hank Mobley, Mobley’s Message, Prestige 7061. This looked to be an original pressing with the deep grooves and New York address on the label. It’s always nice to see more pictures, but this one looked legitimate. The record and cover were both listed in M- condition and the bidding ended at $1,027.99.

Here’s a random rare remnant from the insanely rare offerings of bobdjukic: Sonny Rollins Plays, Period 1204. This looked to be an original pressing. The condition was probably in the range of VG++ for the record and the cover. The price was $798.77.

Tommy Flanagan, The Cats, New Jazz 8217. This looks like an original pressing with the purple labels and the deep grooves. The record, of course, features John Coltrane as a sideman. The record and cover were both listed in VG+ condition and the price was $381.20.

Donald Byrd, Byrd Jazz, Transition 5. This was an original pressing that looked to be in M- condition, although the seller described it as being in very good condition. He seemed unfamiliar with the grading system most of us use. The record sold for $2,370.67, so others expected that it is in M- condition as well.

Lee Morgan, Candy, Blue Note 1590. This was an original pressing in M- condition for the vinyl and VG++ for the cover. It sold for $1,915.

Sonny Clark, Sonny’s Crib, Blue Note 1576. This was an original pressing in VG+ condition for the record and VG++ condition for the cover. It sold for $1,650.

Sonny Rollins Plays, Period 1204. This one was in M- condition for the record and VG for the cover. It sold for $1,191.88. I think this is the only Rollins record from the 50s I don’t own in an original pressing. Hopefully one day we can correct that oversight. But not for $1,200.
The post Some Jazz Vinyl For the $1,000 Bin first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

It isn’t often I see records or even labels I’m not familiar with, but here’s one that was on eBay this weekend. It was listed as an Art Pepper record: Mucho Calor, Andex S3002. Not only have I never seen the record before, I’ve never seen the Andex label. I have a strong feeling this is some kind of reissue or compilation, but not sure what the root label is. It’s a stereo pressing, but it’s supposed to be 1957, which is pre-stereo. Plus, with the other artists listed, it doesn’t look like an Art Pepper record nor does it look like a record date that was led by Pepper. This one was probably VG++ for the record and VG+ for the cover and it sold for $87.66. I’m sure someone out in the Jazz Collector audience will be able to shed a little light on this one.

This one fetched quite a nice price: Thad Jones, Mad Thad, Period 1208. Admittedly, this is a hard to find record, but I haven’t seen it often go for this price. The record was in VG++ condition and the cover was VG. The price was $610 and there were 27 bids, which is a pretty high number.

This one would typically get a higher price, but the listing wasn’t very complete, so purchasing the record was a gamble:

Jackie McLean, Jackie’s Bag, Blue Note 4051. The seller used the word “original” in the listing, but there was no mention of a deep groove or an ear or a Van Gelder stamp/signature. So who knows if it was original. Also, instead of VG+ or VG, he described the vinyl as being in “decent” condition, which is not a ringing endorsement. This one sold for $165.40. What do you think?

This a great record that sold for a pretty hefty price: Oliver Nelson, The Blues and the Abstract Truth, Impulse 5. This one had the original cover, which is hard to find, and it was in M- condition for the vinyl and VG+ for the cover. It sold for $317.34.

It was a promo copy, with a promo stamp and the white label and it was in M- condition, for both the record and the cover. The price was $124. What do you think: Does the promo stamp enhance the value of a record for you, or detract, or neither. I recall in the world of rock albums, the promo stamp was always considered a good thing, but I’ve never heard that one way or another in the jazz world. Which leads me to this LP: Bill Evans, Waltz For Debby, Riverside 399. This was an original pressing with the white promo label. The record was

listed in VG condition, although the seller said it played well, and the cover was also VG. The price was $560. I have a sense that this is one of the jazz records that would be enhanced by the promo markings.

We were also watching a couple of interesting, hard-to-find LPs by Thad Jones, including: Thad Jones, Mad Thad, Period 1208. This was an original pressing and it was listed in VG++ condition for both the record and the cover. The price was $525. There there was this: Thad Jones, The Jones Boys, Period 1210. This was an original pressing. The vinyl was M- and the cover was VG+. The price on this was $130.50. Why the price differential between the two Thad Jones LPs? Who knows? This is eBay, after all.
The post Catching Up: What’s a Promo Worth? first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

They were: Sonny Rollins Plays, Period 1204. This was an original pressing and it was listed in M- condition for both the vinyl and the cover. The price was $1,285. We’ve seen this previously sell for $2,000 in the Jazz Collector Price Guide. Also re-entering the $1,000 win was this: Hank Mobley, Hank, Blue Note 1568. This is the one we were watching that had a starting price of just about $2,000. It was an original pressing. The vinyl was listed in VG++ condition and the cover was listed as VG+. The starting price was $1,999.99 and that was the sale price as well. Sometimes I’m skeptical if a record gets only one bid, but this

seems to be a reasonable price for this record in this condition. Forgive me, did I just say $2,000 was a reasonable price for a single record? Perhaps I’ve been watching too many eBay auctions for too many years.
The post For the $1,000 Bin: Newk and Hank first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

This is one you don’t normally expect to sell for more than $300: Lee Konitz with Warne Marsh, Atlantic 1217. This was an original black label pressing in M- condition and sold for $311. I have to give the seller a lot of credit for this one. He took an absolutely crystal-clear picture and he did a very nice job of describing the condition of the LP. It really catches your eye and makes you want the LP. Sometimes, presentation is everything.

Here’s one you almost never see going for a big price: Dave Brubeck Time Out, Columbia 8192. This was one of the most popular jazz LPs ever and

there were a lot of copies pressed. This one, however, was an original stereo pressing with the white promo label. The vinyl was in M- condition and the cover was VG++. The price was $188.50.

This is another one you don’t see too often: Sonny Rollins Plays, Period 1404. This one was listed as VG for the record and VG+ for the cover. It sold for $241.50.
