Here are a bunch of rare jazz records on my eBay watch list as I prepare to take a brief holiday. Let’s start with Donald Byrd, Byrd Blows on Beacon Hill, Transition 17. The seller uses one of our least favorite terms, “Holy Grail,” which wouldn’t apply to this record even if it was suitable language, if you get my drift. Anyway, this looks to be an original pressing with the booklet. The record is listed in Ex condition and the cover looks to be a fairly generous VG. The bidding is in the $1,300 range with more than four days left on the auction, so you could see this in the $2,000 bin when all is said and done. The top price for this record, according to Popsike, has been about $3,840. I was fortunate when I purchased the collection in Baltimore to get a beautiful clean original copy of this record.

Here’s an interesting copy of John Coltrane, Blue Train, Blue Note 1577. This is a not-quite-original pressing with the West 63rd Street labels, but no New York 23 label. This is another one in which the seller feels compelled to use the word ‘grail,’ although not a holy one, just a regular old grail. The record and cover look to be in very nice VG+ condition. The bidding is in the $210 range with about four days to go. To me, this would be a lovely, acceptable copy to own. I can’t imagine that it sounds one whit different than the version with the New York 23 label. I have a nice original pressing of this record, as well as a duplicate that has the West 63rd labels, the ear, the RVG signature and only one side deep groove. What do you think the provenance of that pressing is, and what do you think it would be worth in VG++/VG+ condition? I’m curious because I did offer it for a price to one of our loyal readers.

This one looks like a prize: Presenting Ernie Henry, Riverside 222. This is an original mono pressing with the white labels and it seems to be in M- condition for the record and the cover. The start price is $150 and so far there are no bidders with about five days left on the auction. There is also a promo stamp on the back.

Joe Henderson, Page One, Blue Note 84140. This looks to be an original stereo pressing with the New York USA labels. The record is listed in Ex condition and the cover VG+. The start price is around $300 and so far there are no bidders with more than three days to do. My preference on these Blue Notes is always for the mono pressing, although I can’t exactly tell you the reason. Maybe someone can explain it to me.

The Jazz Record Center has an auction going now, but it’s not one of their usual high-end collections, although this is a nice item: Ray Bryant Trio, New Jazz 8227. This is an original deep groove pressing with the purple labels. This looks to be in M- condition for both the record and the cover. The start price is $100 and so far there are no bidders with about five days left on the auction.

I am not an expert on his music and was never really a fan, although I typically liked what I heard, at least from his early years. So I’m going to go back to what I normally do here, which is watch records on eBay, starting with a pair of French records from a French seller: Barney Wilen, Tilt, Swing 30.058. This is an original pressing from 1957. It is listed in VG+ condition for the record and M- for the cover. The price is in the $400 range with less than two days left, but it has not yet reached the seller’s reserve price. Nice cover, but don’t know the record. Readers? Another one that is quite rare, but unfamiliar to my ears:

Barney Wilen, Barney at the Club St. Germain, French RCA 430.053. This is an original pressing that looks to be in M- condition for both the record and the cover. The bidding is at $350 but, again, it has not yet reached the seller’s reserve price.

Here’s another rare one that may not sell: Lee Morgan, Candy, Blue Note 1590. This looks to we an original West 63rd Street pressing. The seller lists it in VG+ condition for the vinyl and VG for the cover. There’s clearly some damage on the cover, which may be a turn-off to would be buyers, particularly since the start price is approximately $1,400. So far there are no takers, with just a few hours left on the auction.

Here’s one that will sell: Hank Mobley, Jazz Message #2, Savoy 12092. This is an original pressing with the red label. The record and cover are both listed in VG++ condition and the bidding is in the $250 range. The auction is closing today and there is no reserve price.

This one will sell as well, perhaps by the time many of you read this post: Ray Bryant Trio, Prestige 7098. This is an original pressing with the yellow labels and New York address. The record is listed in M- condition and the cover as VG++, although I may be skeptical based on the picture of the cover. Looks like it may be more like VG+. Still, it’s a nice record and it will fetch a nice price. The bidding, as of this writing, is in the $350 range.

Time to catch up on the jazz vinyl auctions I was watching on eBay:

Cliff Jordan, Blue Note 1565. This was an original pressing with the New York 23 labels on both sides. Nice. The record was listed in VG++ condition and the cover was VG+. There were 13 bids and it sold for $1,525. In better condition it would certainly have broken the $2,000 barrier, as we have previously seen for this record in the Jazz Collector Price Guide.

This one did make it into the $2,000 bin, with plenty to spare: Tommy Flanagan Overseas, Prestige 7134. This was an original New York yellow label pressing listed in VG++ condition for the record and VG+ for the cover. It sold for $2,314.

Roy Haynes, Cracklin’ with Booker Ervin, New Jazz 8286. This was an original purple label pressing in M- condition for the record and the cover. It sold for $408.33. Anyone find my copy yet? I’m sure if I sold it (which, of course, I still don’t remember), it was not for more than $400.

Ray Bryant Trio, Prestige 7098. This was the one that was described in M- condition for the record and cover but had that super-annoying cutout hole right through the cover and the label. Never mind. It sold for $775.55

This is an original pressing with the purple labels and deep grooves. The record and cover are listed in M- condition. The price is in the $185 range and there are still three days left on the auction. You know you’re in trouble when you lose track of the records in your collection. I know I owned this record and I went to my shelf to look at my copy, but the space on the shelf where this record should have been sitting was bare. So I don’t own the record, apparently. But I can’t remember what I did with my copy. If any of you out there has my copy of Cracklin’ please let me know. Thanks.

This one I know I don’t own: Ray Bryant Trio, Prestige 7098. This is an original yellow label pressing with the New York address. The record and cover are described as being in M- condition, although I can’t accept that a cover with a punch hole through the label is M-. Maybe that’s just me. But probably not. Not to mention some writing on the back. Bidding on this is in the $220 range with three days left on the auction.

While we’re on Prestiges:

Tommy Flanagan Overseas, Prestige 7134. This is an original pressing listed in VG++ condition for the record and VG+ for the cover. The bidding is in the $925 range with well more than three days left on the auction.

I had promised more updates for the Jazz Collector Price Guide and then got distracted by the lovely holiday weekend up in The Berkshires. So here are a few more that will go into the Price Guide soon:

This is a new high point for this record: Curtis Fuller, Bone & Bari, Blue Note 1572. This was an original pressing with the West 63rd Street and NY 23 labels. The record was listed in M- condition and the cover was VG+. The final price was $1,789. I have an M- copy of this record. Would I sell it for $1,789? Hmmmm.

This one also sold for quite a hefty price: Ray Bryant Trio, Prestige 7098. The record and cover were only in VG+ condition, although the cover certainly looked nicer in the photo. Good lesson to be learned here: Spend some time on the photos if you are going to list on eBay, and make sure they are nice and clear. This record sold for $987.77.

Jerome Richardson, Roamin’ with Richardson, New Jazz 8226. This was an original purple label with the deep grooves and the record and cover both seemed to be in M- condition. This one sold for $374. Frankly, I thought it would fetch a higher price.

This is one of those we were watching where it was really hard to gauge the actual condition of the record, because the seller claimed ignorance and listed the condition of the record and the cover as “GOOD or better.” In record collecting parlance, good means the record is really in pretty awful shape, perhaps not even listenable. I got the the feeling that this seller’s records were a lot better than that, including: Curtis Fuller, New Trombone, Prestige 7107. It sold for $393, which means buyer’s probably assumed it was at least VG+ or better. Didn’t see feedback on this particular record, but also didn’t see any negative feedback on any of the other records either.
