Been so busy around here, haven’t even been on eBay in days. So what have we been missing? Here’s some interesting jazz vinyl stuff.

Donald Byrd, Byrd, Transition 5. This was an original pressing with the booklet. The record was listed in VG condition and the cover/booklet both looked very nice, probably VG++ the way we rank things around here. The price was $1,336.55. I was willing to sell my Byrd’s Eye View on Transition, no booklet, but no one has really taken me up on my offer to shop through my collection in person. Now, I’m starting to pack things up in preparation for the big moves, coming soon — although the “store” is still open.

This one also made it to the $1,000 bin: Jutta Hipp With Zoot Sims, Blue Note 1530. This was an original Lexington Avenue pressing, quite lovely, and it was in what looked like VG++ condition for both the record and the cover. It sold for $1,300. Just seeing pictures of those Lexington Avenue labels gets the heart kind of racing.

While we’re on Blue Note Lexingtons, how about this one from the same seller: J.R. Monterose, Blue Note 1536. This also looked quite lovely, probably VG++ condition for the record and the cover. It sold for $1,200.

This is always an interesting barrier, so here are some of the records that crossed it:

Sonny Clark, Dial S For Sonny, Blue Note 1570. This was an original pressing, of course.
Back from the weekend, so it’s time to catch up on eBay. Here are some of the records we were watching.

Donald Byrd Sextet, Transition 5. This was an original pressing in what seemed to be M-/VG++ condition. The LP had the booklet and sold for $300.

Eric Dolphy at the Five Spot, Volume 1, New Jazz 8260. This was an original pressing with the purple label. The seller listed it in M-/M- condition, although there seemed to be ringwear on the cover, based on the photo. Still the price was $278.99.

Here’s a record we were watching because we were curious to see if it would sell. It was a nice copy of Charlie Parker on Dial, Dial 203. The dealer had a start price of $499.99 and a “Buy It Now” price of $800. As we expected, the record did not get any bids.

Dizzy Gillespie was not part of the Blue Note stable and, to our knowledge, never recorded any 12-inch LPs for Blue Note. Here, however, is a 10-inch LP, Dizzy Gillespie, Horn of Plenty, Blue Note 5017. This was in VG++/VG++ condition and sold for $172.50.

Here’s a nice original Prestige: Tadd Dameron and John Coltrane, Mating Call, Prestige 7070. This was in M-/VG++ condition and sold for $206.05.

Sometimes you can get original pressings of great music and not have to pay exorbitant collector’s prices. Not often, but sometimes. Here’s a copy of a great record, Oliver Nelson, Blues and the Abstract Truth, Impulse 5. This was a stereo pressing in VG+/VG+ condition. It had the original cover and sold for $71. The music on this LP is spectacular with Eric Dolphy, Bill Evans, Freddie Hubbard, Paul Chambers and Roy Haynes.

Here’s another one that falls into the same category: Ben Webster, King of the Tenors, Verve 8020. This was an original pressing, great music, trumpeter logo in VG++/VG++ condition. It sold for $40.99.

And here’s yet another nice collectible for a reasonable price. Roy Eldridge and Dizzy Gillespie, Roy and Diz, Clef 641. This was an original pressing in M-/M- condition. It sold for $47.99.

That’s it for today. Tomorrow we’ll look ahead on eBay and see what’s in store for the coming week. See you then. — Al

For those of you keeping score at home, here are some of the items we’ve been watching on eBay:

Tal Farlow, The Tal Farlow Album, Norgran 1047. This is an autographed copy in M-/M- condition. Price: $249.95. This was one of those records I planned to bid on but figured the price would go too high because of the condition of the LP and the presence of the autograph. The first bid was $249.95 and I expected it to go way up from there. But nobody else bid, including me.

The Farlow record was from the seller Jazz5060. We’ve been watching this seller because he consistently has good records on eBay. Here are a couple more, one already sold, one that failed to meet its reserve price and one coming up over the next day or so.

Sonny Stitt, Jazz At the Hi Hat, Roost 418. This was an original 10-inch LP in M-/VG++ condition. Price: $224.50

This is one from Jazz5060 that failed to meet its reserve price:

The Rene Thomas/Bobby Jaspar Quintet, RCA 10324. This was in M-/VG++ condition and fetched a top bid of $493 but did not sell.
