I know I haven’t posted in a while when every item in my eBay watch list is no longer active. Here are some of the highlights that I’ve missed, starting with Sonny Clark, Cool Struttin’, Blue Note 1588. This was an original pressing with the West 63rd address, deep grooves, etc. The seller listed the vinyl in VG++ condition and the cover as VG+/VG++, but the picture clearly shows that it’s not VG++, so that might cause some concern about the vinyl grading as well. It would concern me, that’s for sure, particularly at that price, which was $2,524. Not that I would ever pay that price anyway, nor would I pass judgment on anyone that would

Here’s another Blue Note that ended up in the $1,000 bin: Lee Morgan, City Lights, Blue Note 1575. This was also an original West 63rd Street pressing. The vinyl was listed in M- condition and the cover was VG++. The final price was $1,081.

Here are two we were watching that ended up selling for a bit more than we expected: Paul Chambers, Go!, VeeJay 1014. This was an original pressing with the maroon label. It looked to be in M- condition for both the record and the cover. If it were recorded on Blue Note, it would likely be a $1,000 record. On VeeJay I would have expected it to selling the $100 range, but it wound up selling for $281.95. Yusef Lateef, Prayer to the East, Savoy 12117. This was an original red label pressing in M- condition for the record and the cover. Same situation: On Blue Note this is a $1,000 record. On Savoy it sold for $491, still quite high in my estimation.
The post Catching Up On Some Rare Jazz Vinyl first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

Let’s catch up on some of the items we were watching and which generated some interest among the Jazz Collector community.

Wynton Kelly, Kelly at Midnight, VeeJay 3001. This was the stereo pressing in M- condition. Most of us, it seems, were quite surprised when the bidding on this approached the $400 range. It ended up selling for $565, with 24 bids and what seemed to be three serious bidders.

A Swinging Introduction to Jimmy Knepper, Bethlehem 77. This was an original pressing in M- condition. This is the one that has Bill Evans as a sideman. When I wrote about this record, there were no bids at a start price of $135. By the time the auction closed the bidding had reached $338. Coincidence? I don’t think so. I would think the post had something to do with generating interest, particularly spotlighting Evans as a sideman, which the listing failed to do.

I had a feeling this one would break into the $2,000 bin, and it did: Lee Morgan, Candy, Blue Note 1590. This was an original deep groove West 63rd Street pressing in M- condition for the record and the cover. It sold for $2,225.

This is a stereo pressing in M- condition for both the record and the cover. Is it the stereo pressing and the “stereophonic” lettering on the cover? Vee Jays usually don’t have this type of cachet, nor do Wynton Kelly trio records.

Think this one will sell? Presenting Ernie Henry, Riverside 222. This is a blue label pressing so it is not an original, which would have the white label. The record and cover are in VG+ condition. The seller has set an opening bid of about $200 and so far there are no bids at all, with the auction closing later today. My take: If it was in M- condition as a blue-label second press it might sell for $200, but in VG+ condition, I have my doubts.

While we’re not on Blue notes, here’s another:

Charlie Parker, New Sounds in Modern Music as Played By the Creator, Savoy 9011. I always love that phrase “as played by the creator.” Kind of ascribes a God-like quality to Bird, which, of course, many jazz lovers find to be wholly appropriate. This is a 10-inch LP, of course, and the vinyl is in M- condition and the cover is VG+. It’s nice listening to Bird on a 10-inch LP, although it’s nicer, in my opinion, on a 78, but quite nice as well. This one is in the $260 range and closes later today.

I mentioned yesterday that there were a bunch of jazz records I was watching on eBay. Here are a few more, starting with: Paul Chambers, Go, VeeJay 1014. This was an original pressing with the maroon label. We don’t often see VeeJay records getting collectible prices, but this one has appeared before in the Jazz Collector Price Guide. The previous top bid was $189. This one sold for $255, in M- condition for the record and probably VG++ for the cover. What always excited me about this record was the appearance of Cannonball Adderley as a side man, but the listing highlights Wynton Kelly instead. I guess it worked. The record fetched top dollar. Speaking of Paul Chambers, there is this: Paul Chambers, Whims of Chambers, Blue Note 1534. This is a West 63rd pressing, which makes it a second pressing. Early and nice, and some would even characterize it as an “original” Blue Note, but definitely not a first pressing. I’m always curious to watch the market for these second pressings because they look great and sound great but, for a collector, there’s always the knowledge that, hmmmm, I don’t have an original. This one is in VG+ or VG++ condition for the record, and VG+ for the cover. The price is around $200 and so there there is one bidder, with the auction closing tomorrow.

Here are a couple for the $1,000 bin:

Sonny Clark Trio, Time 70010. This was an original pressing. The record was listed in VG++ condition and the cover was VG+. The price was $1,009.

This one hasn’t officially entered the $1,000 bin yet because the auction is ongoing and, in actuality, it will probably sell for more than $3,000 when all is said and done and all the bids have been placed: Hank Mobley, Blue Note 1568. This is an original pressing without the R, and it looks to be in VG++ or M- condition for the record and probably VG++ for the cover. There’s another day to go and the price is in the $1,800 range.

Quite a fair number of nice items on eBay today. At Jazz Collector, we have a few items up there this week, and we’re hoping to post several more. To view our items, you can just click Items For Sale above. We’ve got a couple of decent pieces up there, including Wynton Kelly, Kelly at Midnite, VeeJay 3011. This one is in nice condition and is only priced at about $20 at this point. In the Jazz Collector Price Guide, we’ve seen a promo copy of this record sell for $148. We’re also working on adding an e-commerce module to the Web site, so we can sell collectibles right from here. Stay tuned for an update on that — we should be rolling with it this week.

Here are a few interesting items for sale today:

Kenny Burrell and Art Blakey, On View at the Five Spot Cafe, Blue Note 4021. This is an original West 63rd Street pressing that looks to be in M- condition, both record and cover. The current price is $280.

Here’s one we don’t normally see selling for a collectible price, but this one is already at about $60: Bud Powell, Swinging With Bud, RCA 1507. This one is in M- condition, both record and cover.

The seller Mojee has several nice records for sale today, including: Jon Eardley Seven, Prestige 7033. This is an original New York pressing. The record is in VG condition and the cover is VG+. The current price is only $27.79, but we’ll be surprised if this sells for less than $100, even in this condition.

Finally, there’s Curtis Fuller Volume 3, Blue Note 1583. The seller has his own system for grading. Based on what he says, these look they would fall into our VG++/VG+ categories. The current price is $59.15.
