Of course, as they say, astronomical is in the eye of the beholder. Here are a few:

Kenny Burrell, Blue Lights Volume 1, Blue Note 1596. This looks to be an original pressing with the West 63rd Street address and deep grooves. It has, of course, the Andy Warhol cover, which makes it quite collectible and often quite expensive. This one looks to be in M- condition for the vinyl and probably VG++ or M- for the cover. There’s one day left to bid and the price is about $535.

Sonny Clark, Cool Struttin’, Blue Note 1588. This looks to be an original deep groove pressing. The seller lists it as M-, but he does mention some marks on the vinyl. The cover is listed as VG+. There are four days to go and the price is still less than $150. We’ve seen this record sell for more than $3,000 in the past, so we would expect it to go quite a bit higher, likely into the $1,000 bin.

Sonny Rollins, Moving Out, Prestige 7058. Not my favorite Rollins LP, but an original Prestige right in the sweet spot of the label. This one has been posted by Euclid Records and is listed in M- condition for both the record and the cover, with the adjective “gorgeous” bandied about in the description. This is already close to $500 and there are still five days to go, so perhaps this one will reach the astronomical stage.

Another Blue Note:

Walter Davis, Davis Cup, Blue Note 4018. This is another original pressing from a reliable seller and it is listed in VG++ condition for the record and VG+ for the cover. I’d love to have this one, but I’m sure it will be out of my price range. This one is at $310 with more than five days still to go.

I’ve actually bid on a few records recently, but these days I don’t even get close, unless I want to really gamble on condition, which I don’t. Anyway, I was watching this record on eBay: Walter Davis Jr., Davis Cup, Blue Note 4018. This was an original pressing and it was listed in M- condition for both the record and the cover. A few hours before the bidding closed it wasn’t getting much action. My theory: Even though the listing described the cover as M-, it didn’t look that good in the photo. I know, however, that when you are taking pictures of black covers you often get a glare that distorts the image and makes it look worse than it actually is. I took a shot and set up my Bid Nip to put in a bid of about $350 with five seconds to go. Hah!. The record

sold for $901. I had a similar experience with this record, although I was a bit more hopeful that I might win it: Kenny Drew, This is New, Riverside 236. This was an original pressing with the white label and deep grooves. It features Hank Mobley and Donald Byrd and is like a Blue Note, only not a Blue Note. The listing’s headline did not mention the prominent sidemen and I thought maybe I could “steal” this one at around $200, since it wasn’t getting much action. It sold for $338.34.
The post Bidding, Losing & Bidding Again first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

Let’s hope so. Anyway, here are a few items on the extremes: A couple more for the $1,000 bin and a few that normally don’t make the Price Guide but, for one reason or another, have broken through.

First the big ones: Walter Davis, Davis Cup, Blue Note 4018. This was an original pressing and it was listed in M- condition for both the record and the cover. It sold for $1,300. Also, Paul Chambers Quintet, Blue Note 1564. This was an original pressing. The record and cover looked to be in VG+ or VG++ condition. The price was $1,032.

Here are a couple that don’t often get collectible prices: Dizzy Gillespie, Afro, Norgran 1003. This was an original yellow label pressing with a cover design by David Stone Martin. It was only in VG condition and sold for $72. That may not be a Blue Note price, but it is still somewhat surprising. Few of the Dizzy record

have cachet as collectibles, even the Norgrans, and this one was not in great shape. Perhaps it is the unusual cover illustration by Stone Martin?

Not sure we’ve covered this one in the Price Guide before: Sonny Rollins, Alfie, Impulse 9111. This seemed to be an original pressing, although it wasn’t clear from the listing, and it seemed to be in M- condition, although that wasn’t clear either. It sold for $51: Not a high-end collectible price, but one that’s starting to creep up. Also on Impulse: John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman, Impulse 40. This was an original stereo pressing. It was in M- condition and it sold for $197.49. No surprise this LP would get a good price in that condition, but usually the premium is paid for mono pressings.
The post Updates: $1,000 Bin, Dizzy, Sonny, Trane first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

Another day, another $1,000 Blue Note on eBay. Today’s entry to the club will be: Walter Davis, Davis Cup, Blue Note 4018. This is an original West 63rd Street pressing and it appears to be in M- condition for both the record and the cover, based on the seller’s description. The current price is $999.95, so it’s a pretty save bet it will sell for more than $1,000. Perhaps a lot more than $1,000.

Atomic Records also has a few nice items on eBay now, including: George Wallington, Jazz For the Carriage Trade, Prestige 7032. This is an original New York pressing. The condition of the vinyl looks to be about VG++ and the cover VG+ or a little better. The current price is more than $300, but it hasn’t yet reached the seller’s reserve. From the same seller is this item:

Lester Young, The President, Norgran 1005. This is an original yellow label pressing with the cover design by David Stone Martin. The record is VG++ and the cover looks to be VG+. The current price is about $150 with more than a day to go.
The post On eBay: Walter Davis, Wallington, Prez first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

Walter Davis, Davis Cup, Blue Note 4018. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing and was sold by a reputable dealer. The record was listed in M- condition and was described as “uplayed.” The cover was probably VG+, based on the description. The price was $2,000. Our previous high price for this record in the Jazz Collector Price Guide was $1,248.

This one has made many appearances in the $1,000 bin: Tommy Flanagan Overseas, Prestige 7134. This was an original pressing with a promo stamp. The record and cover looked to be in M- condition. The price was $2,175.

Lee Morgan, Indeed, Blue Note 1538. This looked like an original Lexington Avenue pressing with the deep grooves, although the seller’s description was quite lacking, making it

a bit of a risky proposition. He described the condition of the record as good and the cover as good, but he also stated that the record and cover seemed clean, and the pictures looked quite nice. He said he was not a dealer, which is always a risk, and he had not played the record, which is another risk. Nonetheless, the record sold for $1,048.
The post For the $1,000 Bin: Blue Notes, Prestige first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

All of these will be entered into the Jazz Collector Price Guide as soon as we get a chance.

Jackie McLean, Lights Out, Prestige 7035. This was an original pressing with the yellow label and New Jersey address. The record and cover both seemed to be in VG+ condition. The price was $599.95.

Walter Davis, Davis Cup, Blue Note 4018. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing in M- condition. It sold for $790.

Freddie Hubbard, Open Sesame, Blue Note 4040. This too was an original pressing and it was in M- condition, both the record and the cover. The price was $636. This was actually surprisingly low — we’ve seen this record sell for more than $1,000 several times, and reach as high as $1,590 for a record that was not in M- condition.

Paul Chambers, Bass on Top, Blue Note 1569. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing. The

record was VG++ and the cover was M-. The price was $616.

Lou Donaldson, Wailing With Lou, Blue Note 1545. This was an original pressing. The record was VG++ and the cover was VG+. The price was $518.80.

Sonny Red, Out of the Blue, Blue Note 4032. This was an original pressing in VG++ condition, both record and cover. The price was $393.

Aside from the Hubbard record, the prices seem to be quite high, don’t they? No summer doldrums here, at least not in the Blue Note/Prestige aisle.
The post For the Price Guide: A Blue Note Batch & A Prestige first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

Sorry, sorry, sorry.

So, where were we when we were so rudely interrupted. Ah, yes, we were looking at records that crossed the $1,000 barrier. We just did a quick search of eBay and found a few more for you, just from the past few weeks when Jazz Collector went AWOL. Here are a few to peruse and muse about:

Walter Davis, Davis Cup, Blue Note 4018. This was an original deep groove pressing with the West 63rd Street address. It was in M-/M- condition and sold for $1,248.

John Coltrane, Giant Steps, Atlantic 1311. This was an original mono pressing with the black label. It was also in M-/M- condition. Price: $1,031.66

Art Pepper, Modern Art, Intro 606. This was an original pressing that was in M-/M- condition. Price: $1,075

Yow, I’m sure most of you saw this one: Charlie Parker, Bird Blows The Blues, Dial LP1. This is a 12-inch LP, issued from the Spring of 1949 with no cover. The dealer listed it as being the first 12-inch jazz LP ever produced, which we’ve never seen disputed. This was in VG+ condition, with a yellow label and purple vinyl. Price: $2,850

George Wallington at the Bohemia, Progressive 1001. This was an original pressing that came directly out of George Wallington’s collection. It was listed by his brother, who listed the vinyl as M- and the cover as VG, but he said there were virtually no flaws. The price was $1,380.50.

That’s it for now. We’ll be back soon. Promise.
The post Back Again, Looking at High-End Vinyl first appeared on jazzcollector.com.
