New Jazz Record Center Auction Could Be Big

Got an email from the Jazz Record Center and they have an auction closing in a couple of days and it could be a doozy. Here’s one of the items we’ll be watching closely, to see if it perhaps sets a new record for Jazz Collector: Hank Mobley, Blue Note 1568. This is an original pressing and it’s in M- condition: In fact, it’s listed as “near new.” The combination of one of the rarest records, a Blue Note at that, and the most trusted seller, is definitely worth watching. So far, the record has a start price of $2,500 and there are no bidders.

On EBay: Hank & a Pair Of Lees

Here are the results of a jazz vinyl few items we’ve been watching on e-Bay:

Lee Morgan, Indeed!, Blue Note 1538. This was an original Lexington Avenue pressing with the flat edge. The record was in VG+ condition and the cover was VG. The price was $1,247. This seller had about 300 records for auction at one time. Not sure how that works as a selling strategy. I generally tend to spread my listings out a bit more, but I can see where it makes sense to do a lot at one time. You can combine shipping costs, which always helps, and sometimes buyers figure if they’re buying a couple of records from you, the may as well bid on a few more. But it’s putting a lot of eggs in the basket of who may be active on eBay that particular week. In any case, it didn’t seem to impact the price of this Lee Morgan LP. Price Updates: Hank, Jackie, Farmer, Moody

Just spent the morning updating the Jazz Collector Price Guide, so there are a bunch of new records we’ve been watching, including these, all of which have been mentioned before:

Hank Mobley, Mobley’s Second Message, Prestige 7082. This was an original New York pressing. The record and cover were listed in VG++ condition and the price was $482.

Another nice Prestige: Webster Young, For Lady, Prestige 7106. This was in M- condition and sold for $529.

Almost bid on this one: Freddie Redd, Shades of Redd, Blue Note 4045. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing and it was in VG++/VG++ condition. It sold for $678.

Zoot Sims, Down Home, Bethlehem 60. This was an original pressing in M- condition for both the record and the cover. It sold for $435.

Jackie McLean, The New Tradition, Ad Lib 6601. This was an original pressing of this very rare record. It was

Catching Up On Some Sweet Blue Notes

Here are a few more Blue Note 1500-series beauties we’ve been watching:

This one goes into the $1,000 bin: Lou Donaldson, Quartet, Quintet, Sextet, Blue Note 1537. This was an original Lexington Avenue pressing that was in M- condition all the way around. A real beauty. It sold for $1,880.55.

Lee Morgan, City Lights, Blue Note 1575. This was an original pressing. The vinyl was listed as VG++ and the cover was listed as VG+. The price was $850 and it had nearly 200 page views, which means a lot of people were at least considering a bid. I know I was.

Paul Chambers, Bass on Top, Blue Note 1569. This was also an original pressing, although the listing was a little weird, advertising it as Bone and Bari, the Curtis Fuller LP. Nonetheless, whatever record this turns out to be it was listed in VG++ condition and it sold for $790.

On eBay: Watching Some Prestiges

Here are some interesting items we’ll be watching this weekend.

Tommy Flanagan Overseas, Prestige 7134. This is an original pressing. The vinyl is listed in M- and the cover looks to be VG++. I went years and years without ever seeing a copy of this record, always to hear about it in legend as one of the rarest of the rare. It’s funny, isn’t it, how there seems to be a nice copy of this record on eBay every couple of weeks? I think it’s a function of eBay and potential sellers realizing that can get top dollar for the record, so they look to flip it. I don’t have an original copy in my collection, but I’ve survived this long without it, so I think I’ll be OK. This one is more than $1,300 and it still has not reached the seller’s reserve price.

On eBay: Johnny Griffin, Art Farmer, Hank Mobley

Ever think about how many jazz records are on eBay at any one time? When I was perusing the list this morning I checked it out: Today there are more than 142,000 jazz records on eBay, just 33 RPM. Of that, there are about 8,000 up for auction. Here are a few of them:

Here’s a record I didn’t know about: Johnny Griffin, Night Lady, Philips 48071. I should be more specific: I was aware of this record as a U.S. Emarcy pressing but, until seeing this listing, I didn’t realize it was originally issued in The Netherlands. This one looks to be in very nice condition and is at about $340 with several hours left to go.

This one will be getting a nice price: Art Farmer, Farmer’s Market, New Jazz 8203. This is an original pressing with the purple label. It looks to be in near mint condition and is already at more than $300 with a few more hours to go.

Updating the $1,000 Bin, Thanks To JRC

As I’m catching up on the eBay action I’ve been missing the past few weeks, I’ve noticed that the Jazz Record Center recently made quite a large contribution to the $1,000 bin. Here are some of the choice items, all Blue Notes:

Lee Morgan, Candy, Blue Note 1590. This was an original pressing that looked to be in new, pristine condition. It sold for $2,905.55.

Jutta Hipp With Zoot Sims, Blue Note 1530. This was an original pressing. The vinyl appeared to be in new near-mint condition, while the cover had a few minor issues, perhaps VG++. The price was $1,954.49.

Hank Mobley, Peckin’ Time, Blue Note 1574. This was an original pressing that also looked to be in near mint condition. The price was $1,580. Where does he find these records in such immaculate condition?

Watching eBay: Blue Train, Sonny Plus Four

Here are some records we’re watching now on eBay:

The same seller that has the copy of Hank Mobley, Blue Note 1568 with a start price of almost $3,000 also has this: John Coltrane, Blue Train, Blue Note 1577. This is an original West 63rd Street pressing and it is listed in VG++ condition. The start price is about $900. It’s interesting to watch this and the Mobley because the seller obviously decided to go with a high start price rather than put the record up with a reserve price. I actually prefer it this way as a buyer, but as a seller I’m not sure which is the best way to get people to bid.

I’m watching this one because it’s mine: Sonny Rollins Plus Four, Prestige 7038. This one is a New York pressing with a New York cover. The cover is not the kakubushi frame, but it’s hard not to consider this an original pressing with both

On eBay: Morgan, Zoot, Chambers & Rare Mobley

Here are some nice items coming up soon on eBay:

Lee Morgan Sextet, Blue Note 1541. This is an original Lexington Avenue pressing being sold by Euclid Records. The vinyl is listed as VG++ and the cover is listed as M-. The current price is a little more than $300, but it’s hard to believe that this one won’t sell for more than $1,000, perhaps considerably more, given the way prices on Blue Notes have been going.

The Great Zoot Sims, Down Home, Bethlehem 60. This is an original red label pressing. The record and vinyl seem to be in what we would grade as VG++ condition, based on the seller’s description. The current price is about $150.

This one is already close to $800 and it hasn’t yet reached the seller’s reserve price:
