Updating The Price Guide, Part 2

Here are some more items we’ll be loading into the Jazz Collector Price Guide today:

Jackie McLean and Company, Prestige 7087. This was an autographed original New York pressing. The record was M- and the cover was VG++. Price: 418

Horace Parlan, Headin’ South, Blue Note 4062. This was a New York USA pressing — not original — and was in M- condition. Price $371

Zoot Sims and the Modern Art of Jazz, Dawn 1102. This was an original mono pressing. The record and cover were in M- condition. Price: $105.01

We were watching this one to see if it had much value as a collectible. Apparently not: Dexter Gordon, Live at the Amsterdam Paradiso, Catfish 336-337. This was a double LP with the records VG++ and the cover VG+. Price: $30.53

Another slow, slow, slow day on eBay. So slow, in fact, that we only found a couple of records to watch. So slow that we looked all the way ahead until Wednesday to make sure no one inflicted mischief on our computer to prevent it from viewing collectible jazz records. Fortunately, as we looked ahead, we found some nice collectibles from some of the reliable sellers in the Jazz Collector world, including Euclid Records, Atomic Records and the Jazz Record Center. As for today, the nicest record we found is already closed: The Marty Paich Quartet, featuring Art Pepper, Tampa 28. This was an original red vinyl pressing. The record was VG+ and the cover VG++. The price was $260. Also of interest today: Zoot Sims and the Modern Art of Jazz, Dawn 1102. This is an original pressing, with the record and cover both listed in M- condition. Current price is about $70. That’s really it for today, but tomorrow will be better, we promise. Stay tuned for that post. Actually, not that much is happening on eBay on January 8, 2009. We know it’s our job here at Jazz Collector to watch eBay, but we’ve been derelict in our duties. So, when we logged back on to eBay today for the first time in a couple of weeks, we expected to see the normal spate of high-end collectible jazz vinyl. At first, we were not disappointed. On the first page of listing, under the featured items, there were, as always, some fine choices, including: An original stereo pressing of Miles Davis, Kind of Blue, Columbia 8163: A VG+ copy of Johnny Griffin, The Congregation, Blue Note, 1580 (albeit with a cover that has a water stain; and, among others, an original Lexington Avenue pressing of J. R. Monterose, Blue Note 1536. Having seen these records, were were expecting to see things as normal. But we sludged through more than a dozen pages and 19 hours worth of records before coming upon another set of records that caught our eye. We’ll mention these records in the next post, which, we promise, will be soon. But it is highly unusual to go through that long a period of time without something exciting. So, we ask our readers (if there are any of you still out there given our lengthy absence): Have things been quiet, or is this just an aberration? Has there been any indication that the economy is having an effect on the market? What do you think?

Another Warhol Cover

As we’re updating the Price Guide, we’ve been inputting some very nice Blue Note LPs from the past few weeks, so here are a few highlights to whet your appetite. When you do look at the Price Guide and want to see the most recent items, click the Timestamp button on the far right and have it sort the items by those most recently entered. Remember, you can sort by artist (last name, first name), label, condition, price and time posted. Anyway, here are some of the Blue Notes going into the Price Guide this weekend: We’ve been writing a bit lately on Andy Warhol covers. Another Day on EBAY

While the past two days have been light on eBay, today is fairly loaded with interesting items. Here are a few to keep an eye on:

We’ll start with some nice jazz guitar records. Atomic Records has a pair of nice Tal Farlow records on Norgran: The Artistry of Tal Farlow, Norgran 1014. This is in nice shape and in the $100 range as of this post. Also, Interpretations, Norgran 1027. This seems to be in a bit better condition and is in the same price range. My good friend Dan Axelrod is loaded with personal anecdotes about Tal, and at some point I’m going to prevail upon him to share them on this site. Dan, are you out there? Read more

We’re working on a post to catch up on some of the interesting items we’ve been watching on eBay this week. In the meantime, here are a few items that are closing today that are worth viewing:

Our friends at Euclid Records have this nice item: Paul Chambers Quintet, Blue Note 1564. This is in beautiful condition and, as of now is going for $660.

Here’s another rare Blue Note: Johnny Griffin, The Congregation, Blue Note 1580. This is the original pressing, with the nice cover by Andy Warhol.

Finally, take a look at this one: Jimmy Raney Ensemble, Prestige New Jazz 1103. This is a 10-inch LP and the condition is not great. It’s from a reputable dealer and he has priced it at $99.99 minimum. I’m watching this to see if it sells at all, based on the condition and the start price.

Welcome to Jazz Collector. We’ve been very good about updating the web site every day, so if you haven’t been visiting, please take a look: There’s been some interesting discussion and we’ve been watching some nice items on eBay. Speaking of eBay, as we often do, we start this newsletter with advice to sellers, which we hope will generate some reader response. We also have our usual assortment of upcoming items, some new LPs in our Price Guides and an all-time favorite music clip.

I was recently talking to a subscriber who is interested in selling his collection on eBay as a retirement business. Here’s the main advice I gave him:
