Oh, yes, I had a watchlist on eBay that I haven’t looked at in two weeks. Let’s see what’s there. Phil Woods et al, Four Altos, Prestige 7116. This was an original New York yellow label pressing that was listed in VG++ condition for the record and VG++ for the cover, although I’d say VG+ for the cover. My feeling about cover gradings is if there is a seam split, then VG++ is a bit too optimistic. But that’s me. Anyway, this was a promotional copy and a pressing from a library, which always gives me pause because who knows how the record was handled all these years. This one sold for $451.99. Now the four alto players on this record are Woods, Gene Quill, Sahib Shihab and Hal Stein. And my question is this, for those of us, like me, who mostly organize records alphabetically by artist: Is there any collector out there who files this record under anyone else besides Phil Woods?

Of similar vintage but from a different seller: Phil Woods Septet, Pairing Off, Prestige 7046. This was also an original pressing but the condition was quite a bit less, VG for the record and VG or even VG- for the cover. The final price was $102.50. Not bad, all things considered (for the buyer, that is).

Introducing the Rocky Boyd Quintet, Ease It, Jazztime 001. This was an original pressing. The record was VG+ but the cover was only G, damaged quite badly. Still, the record sold for $850. Guess somebody had a nice cover and a trashed record. I’m in that position, only on the other side with True Blue. I have a decent record, but no cover at all (although I did stick it in a Japanese cover, but every time I look at it I know, deep down, that I’m only fooling myself).

Horace Silver and the Jazz Messengers, Blue Note 1518. This was an original Lexington Avenue pressing that looked to be in M- condition for the record and quite possibly M- for the cover. Not easy to find in that condition, as was reflected by the final price of $998.70. Another buck thirty and we’d be in the thousand dollar bin for this one.

This one was listed at $350 and didn’t sell and then resisted at $350 and didn’t sell again: Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, Blue Note 4003. This was an original mono pressing with the West 63rd Street address. The record was listed in VG+ condition and the cover was listed as Ex-. Normally $350 would be a selling price for this record. However, on the back, in blue ink, Blakey had signed the record and dated it in looks like 1977. Is it possible the autograph actually diminishes the interest in the record for collectors? For me, I like having the autograph.
The post Prestiges, Blue Notes and a Boyd first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

Here are some of the jazz vinyl auctions we are watching on eBay:

Rocky Boyd Quintet, Ease It, Jazztime 001. This is an original pressing listed in M- condition for both the record and the cover. It features Kenny Dorham on trumpet and we’ve seen a copy sell for nearly $700 in the Jazz Collector Price Guide. This one is at about $330 with a day and a half left on the bidding.

The seller vinylrealist is back with some nice items, including: Hank Mobley, Mobley’s Message, Prestige 7061. This is an original pressing in VG++ condition for the record ad M- for the cover. Seller took some very nice pictures, which always helps the listings. This one has a start price of about $900 and a buy-it-now price of about $1,200. So far there are no takers at either price. Did anyone notice that this seller commented on Jazz Collector recently to explain his pricing strategy? I was surprised no one commented.

Here’s another beauty:

Sonny Rollins Plus Four, Prestige 7038. This looks to be an original pressing with the original cover, in M- condition for both the record and the cover. I assume it is the frame cover, or kakubushi, but I would pose the question to the seller if I were bidding, just to make sure. I’m not bidding, though. I already have a beautiful copy of this record.

It was also a review copy. Who would have suspected it would get a top bid of $1,712? I certainly didn’t. Our previous high price for this record in the Jazz Collector Price Guide was more in the range of $300.

From the same seller came a batch of other nice collectibles, also at top prices, including: Rocky Boyd, Ease It, Jazz Time 001. This was an original pressing. The record looked to be M- and the cover was probably VG++. It sold for $668. I owned this record at one time but don’t recall that I ever listened to it. I wound up trading it for something not nearly as collectible. I know this record benefits from the presence of Kenny Dorham, for both musicality and collectibility. How is the record and what can we learn about Rocky Boyd?

Also:

Ted Curson, Plenty of Horn, Old Town 2003. This was another original pressing from the same seller. It was in M- condition for both the record and the cover. It sold for $628.

We were talking about The Three Sounds last week, but this record is certainly in a different category with Lou Donaldson as a leader: LD+3, Blue Note 4012. This was an original pressing that was in M- condition for the record and probably VG++ for the cover. It sold for $531. In fact, as I recall, I may have traded the Rocky Boyd for a copy of LD+3, so maybe I didn’t do so badly after all.
The post Blue Note Jazz Vinyl For the $1,700 Bin first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

I’m a huge Rollins fan and I’ve been collecting for more than 40 years and not only do I not own a copy of this record, I’ve never seen it. It must be quite rare. I would love to have it, yet the price is already more than $400 and I can’t bring myself to spend what it would take to win this. It’s more the principle than the money: Too many years of hunting for bargains, I guess. Anyway, I will be jealous of the winner at whatever price.

There’s a bunch of other interesting jazz vinyl on eBay now as well, including: Rocky Boyd, Ease It, Jazztime JT001. This is a among a nice collection listed by Round Again Records up in Providence, which I have mentioned here before as

a store definitely worth visiting. I guess the owner, Steve, must have bought a jazz collection, so congratulations. This one is M- for the record and VG+ or the cover and is already at more than $660. Like the Rollins 10-incher, it also features Kenny Dorham on trumpet. When you look at this one, you should probably look at other listings from the seller because there are a few nice collectibles.

I’ll file this one under a category of “records I’m tempted to purchase because it looks so nice even though I already have a copy in nice condition:” Stan Getz Plays, Clef 137. This is the 10-inch version with the David Stone Martin cover and it is in VG++ condition for the record and M- for the cover and the picture of the cover accompanying the record looks absolutely pristine. When I first saw this last night, it was at about $30 and I was thinking I should bid because when will I see this record in this condition again. But I looked at my copy and it’s certainly good enough. This one is still only $41 and there’s less than two hours to go and if it goes for less than $100 it will be quite a steal. Not only a great cover, but great music as well.
The post On eBay: A Rare Rollins Prestige Plus Two first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

In my panic over eBay’s glitch yesterday, I tried a bunch of different searches to see how I might be able to alternatively maneuver through the jazz records. I may not have found a smooth alternative, but I did find a lot of pretty nice records for sale, many of which closed last night. Here are some of the interesting ones:

Hank Mobley, Soul Station, Blue Note 4031. This was an original pressing with the West 63rd Street address and it was offered by the seller roverd-90, who has been putting up some very nice jazz vinyl lately. This one was listed in M- condition for both the record and the cover. It sold for $1,232, so welcome, again, to the $1,000 bin. According to our calculations, this is the fourth time this record will have surpassed $1,000 in the Jazz Collector Price Guide.

Rocky Boyd, Ease It, Jazztime 001. This was an original pressing, the record features

Kenny Dorham and the seller was herschel78, who has also been selling some nice jazz vinyl lately. This was in M- condition for the vinyl and VG++ for the cover. The price was $431.60.

Zoot Sims and Joe Newman, Lockin’ Horns, Rama 1003. This was an original pressing. The vinyl was listed as M- and the cover was VG++. The price was $260. I thought it would sell for more than that. I’m watching it because I have a copy I’m thinking of selling. Based on this price, I’m not so sure — my copy is not a duplicate, it would just be one less record in the collection.
The post Catching Up: Mobley & the $1,000 Bin, Boyd, Zoot first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

Here’s an update, all of which will be entered into the Jazz Collector Price Guide sometime over the weekend:

Bill Evans, New Jazz Conceptions, Riverside 223. This was an original white label pressing with the original cover. The cover is one of the things that makes this so collectible, since subsequent versions were released with another cover. For this copy, the record was in M- condition and the cover was listed as VG/VG+. The price was $1,136.

Phil Woods, Warm Woods, Epic 3436. This was an original pressing with the yellow label. The record and the cover were both in M- condition. The price was $555.

Helen Merrill, Emarcy 36006. This was the original pressing of this LP, which features

Clifford Brown on trumpet. The record was in M- condition and the cover was VG+. The price was $348.02.

Rocky Boyd, Ease It, Jazztime 001. This was an original pressing in M- condition, both record and cover. The price was $396.
The post A $1,000 Bill Evans & a Few More For The Price Guide first appeared on jazzcollector.com.
