Catching Up on Some Blue Notes

We’d mentioned the other day that we were watching some Blue Notes so today we will catch up on some of the items we’ve been watching.

Wayne Shorter, JuJu, Blue Note 4182. This was an original pressing in M- condition, both record and cover. It was sold by Euclid Records, which generally means it will get top dollar. This one did: It sold for $443.88. We’ve only tracked this record one time previously in the Jazz Collector Price Guide and it sold for $115 in VG++ condition. So this will go into the Price Guide as a new high point for this record. 

Kenny Dorham, Afro Cuban, Blue Note 1535. This was an original Lexington Avenue pressing. The record was VG++ and the cover was pretty beat, listed as G+ or VG-. Despite the poor condition of the cover, the record still sold for $483.

Here are some new items for the Jazz Collector Price Guide:

Kenny Dorham and the Jazz Prophets Volume 1, ABC Paramount 122. This was an original pressing in VG++ condition. The price was $405.

Introducing Wayne Shorter, VeeJay 3006. This was an original pressing. The record was M-. The cover was VG++, with a cutout hole. The price was $141.50.

Gil Melle, Gil’s Guests, Prestige 7063. This was an original New York pressing. The record was M- and the cover was VG++. The price was $200.

Miles Davis, Dig, Prestige 7014. This was an original New York pressing with the grey cover. The record and cover were VG+. The price was $125.95.

Duke Jordan, Flight to Jordan, Blue Note 4046. This was an original West 63rd Street

How About Another Free Record?

OK, now that we’re back posting regularly again, it’s time to give away another free record. So far we’ve done two giveaways: An OJC copy of The Dual Role of Bob Brookmeyer, Prestige 7066 and a copy of Wayne Shorter, Adam’s Apple, Blue Note 84232. For the next giveaway we have another Blue Note: Hank Mobley, Workout, Blue Note 84080. This is not an original pressing — we’re generous, but not THAT generous — but, instead, is a 1988 reissue from EMI-Manhattan records. The record and cover include the original packaging, including the liner notes from Leonard Feather. Both the record and cover are in M- condition, very nice. Personnel on this LP includes Mobley, Grant Green on guitar, Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums. It was originally recorded on March 26, 1961. 

We have one copy of this to give away, so we will conduct a drawing. In order to participate in the drawing all you have to do is comment on the site — you can comment on this post or ANY post — between now and the end of the day on Feb. 4. Yes, Barack Obama. YAY!!!!!! Not quite as important, we do have a winner of our latest record give-away. Early this morning we asked our lovely bride, Mrs. Jazz Collector, to pick from the seven names who entered our contest to give away the record, Wayne Shorter, Adam’s Apple, Blue Note 84232. Still Time To Win a Free Record

Sorry I haven’t posted in a couple of days. I have a real job, unfortunately, and things got busy this week. I want to remind everyone that there’s still time to win a free record. At Jazz Collector this week we are giving away a copy of Wayne Shorter, Adam’s Apple, Blue Note 84232. This is a 1985 reissue in M- condition and it goes away free to one lucky reader. We even pay for the shipping anywhere in the world. To enter the contest, all you have to do is leave a reply on this post or the original post, which you can view by clicking here.    So far there are only seven entries, so the odds are still pretty good even if you haven’t entered yet. On Tuesday evening, hopefully as we’re celebrating an Obama victory, I will put all of the names into a hat and will ask my lovely bride, Mrs. Jazz Collector (who happens to be celebrating a birthday today), to pull out one name to determine the winner, which we will then announce on the site. I’m  getting chills just thinking about it.

Win This Record

A few weeks ago at Jazz Collector we tried to give away a free record and no one seemed to want it. We posted a Bob Brookmeyer record on the site and simply asked people to leave a comment. No one did. But we gave the record away anyway, and we’re happy to say it has arrived safe and sound in its new home. I will post the note of thanks separately. Anyway, we are not ones to give up too easily, so we are back to try and give away another record. This time it’s Wayne Shorter, Adam’s Apple, Blue Note 84232. This is a great record with Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Reggie Workman and Joe Chambers. This is not an original — we’re generous, but not that generous — but a 1985 reissue from the original historical master tape. The record and cover are both in M- condition. We have one copy to give away, so this is a contest, but you don’t have to do anything to enter the contest except leave a comment on this post.
