“Heya, Al, just randomly nosing around eBay and noticed a few records, all from the same seller. Not one of the more-known sellers we talk about, but the guy recently sold a pretty nice batch of sides for some hefty sums. Included in those were Curtis Fuller New Trombone, Prestige 7107, which at $1,259 set a new record, and also a Riverside white label Monk Plays Ellington, which, at $1,077, was the third highest ever, according to Popsike.

“And riddle me this one: Yusef Lateef Cry Tender, New Jazz 8234 blowing away all prior sales at $1,125! That’s almost $700 more than the previous high! Color me curious, if not suspicious. There may be some other new records set in that batch, but I didn’t dig any further.”
The post “A Pretty Nice Batch of Sides” first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

I know I haven’t posted in a while when every item in my eBay watch list is no longer active. Here are some of the highlights that I’ve missed, starting with Sonny Clark, Cool Struttin’, Blue Note 1588. This was an original pressing with the West 63rd address, deep grooves, etc. The seller listed the vinyl in VG++ condition and the cover as VG+/VG++, but the picture clearly shows that it’s not VG++, so that might cause some concern about the vinyl grading as well. It would concern me, that’s for sure, particularly at that price, which was $2,524. Not that I would ever pay that price anyway, nor would I pass judgment on anyone that would

Here’s another Blue Note that ended up in the $1,000 bin: Lee Morgan, City Lights, Blue Note 1575. This was also an original West 63rd Street pressing. The vinyl was listed in M- condition and the cover was VG++. The final price was $1,081.

Here are two we were watching that ended up selling for a bit more than we expected: Paul Chambers, Go!, VeeJay 1014. This was an original pressing with the maroon label. It looked to be in M- condition for both the record and the cover. If it were recorded on Blue Note, it would likely be a $1,000 record. On VeeJay I would have expected it to selling the $100 range, but it wound up selling for $281.95. Yusef Lateef, Prayer to the East, Savoy 12117. This was an original red label pressing in M- condition for the record and the cover. Same situation: On Blue Note this is a $1,000 record. On Savoy it sold for $491, still quite high in my estimation.
The post Catching Up On Some Rare Jazz Vinyl first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

I guess I must have seen this record somewhere on a discography or on The Blue Note Story, but, honestly, seeing this record on eBay, I thought it was a mistake. Then I did a Google search and Fats Sadi was a Belgian vibist who played with a wide range of artists, including Django Reinhardt, Don Byas and, later on, the Kenny Clarke-Francy Boland Big Band. I don’t know anything about this 10-inch record or how it came about that Fats Sadi recorded for Blue Note in the early 1950s. I do know that this copy of the record is listed in VG+ condition for the record and Ex for the cover and has a start price of about $80. With more two days left on the auction there are no bidders.

This one went for a pretty steep price:

Yusef Lateef, Prayer to the East, Savoy 12117. This was an original pressing with the red label and was listed in VG++ condition for both the record and the cover. It sold for $362. The same seller did quite well with the Duke Jordan record we were watching the other day: Duke Jordan, Flight to Jordan, Blue Note 4046. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing listed in VG++ to mint condition for the record and VG++ for the cover. When we looked at this record just yesterday the bidding was in the $80 range and the action was light. I suggested that the bidding would heat up at the end and it certainly did. The record wound up selling for $1,052.76.
The post A Rare Trio: Fats Sadi, Yusef Lateef, Duke Jordan first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

We’ve been very busy with eBay the past couple of weeks — putting records on eBay is what we often do when we are procrastinating from other work, so this would be the evidence that we’ve been in heavy-duty procrastination mode. Anyway, our neurosis is your gain: This week we’ve had 70 items on eBay, several of which closed yesterday, many more of which close today, and a few more of which close tomorrow. Part of what we have up there now is a nice batch of Impulse LPs we’ve either pulled from our own collection, or pulled from the collection we purchased in Trenton back in May. Here are a couple of examples:

Archie Shepp, Four For Trane, Impulse 71. This is an original orange label pressing in nice VG+ condition. It is closing later today and is currently at $40. Also from the same batch is this:

Yusef Lateef, Jazz ‘Round the World, Impulse 56. This is also an original mono pressing with the orange label. This one is in VG++ condition and is currently at about $25. I knew a knowledgeable collector about 20 years ago who predicted that one day the Impulses would have the same cachet — and the same value — as the Blue Notes and Prestiges. With three or four notable exceptions — John Coltrane with Duke, Coltrane Ballads, A Love Supreme, Oliver Nelson Blues and the Abstract Truth — that prophesy hasn’t come close to coming true. Perhaps someday in the future, but I wouldn’t bet too heavily on it: Although the packaging on the Impulses is great, as is the music (generally), as are the recordings, generally by Rudy Van Gelder. So it’s hard to go wrong, isn’t it?
The post On EBay: A Few From Impulse first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

Time again to catch up on adding some new items to the Jazz Collector Price Guide. Here are a few of the records we’ll be adding.

Paul Chambers, Whims of Chambers, Blue Note 1569. This was an original pressing with the West 63rd Street address. The record was VG++ and the cover was VG+. The price was $660.

John Coltrane, Lush Life, Prestige 7188. This was an original pressing with the yellow label and New Jersey address. It was in M- condition, both record and cover. The price was $274.99

Yusef Lateef, Prayer to the East, Savoy 12117. This was a second pressing with the maroon label. The record was M- and the cover was VG++. It sold for $255. This is the second time we’ve seen a maroon pressing of this sell for well more than $100. Is there something about this record we don’t know?

Joe Henderson, Inner Urge, Blue Note 4189. This was an original New York USA pressing in VG++ condition, both record and cover. The price was $224.50.

Here’s one from a seller who has a zero rating on eBay: Jackie McLean, Jackie’s Bag, Blue Note 4051. This is an original pressing in VG+ condition, both record and cover. The current price is $285, which is pretty high considering the lack of information about the seller.

Here’s a personal favorite, with the original cover that Blue Note changed after the first issue: Art Blakey, A Night At Birdland Volume 2, Blue Note 1522. This is an original Lexington Avenue pressing. The record is listed as VG++ and the cover is VG. The current price is about $110.

Also, Yusef Lateef, Before Dawn, Verve 8217. This is an original pressing with the trumpeter logo. The record is listed in VG++ condition and the cover is VG. The current price is $68.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, there’s this:

Donald Byrd, Byrd in Hand, Blue Note 4019. This is an original West 63rd Street pressing. The record is listed in M- condition and the cover is VG++. The current price is about $50, but that should change since there’s still almost one more day before it closes.
The post Today on Ebay, February 6, 2009 first appeared on jazzcollector.com.
