Time to complete our latest give-away contest. It’s been so long perhaps some of you, like me, had forgotten what we are giving away. Here it is: Dexter Gordon, Blue Note LA393-H2. This is part of the Blue Note Re-Issue Series from 1975. It is a double LP and it is still in its original factory seal. The record is a compilation of some of Dexter’s best work on Blue Note, starting with selections from Dexter Calling in 1961 and extending to Gettin’ Around in 1965. As always, the rules to be eligible for the give-away are simple: All you have to do is comment on the Jazz Collector site during the course of the contest and you are put in the pool of names. That’s it. I am also pleased to report that the number of comments and commenters on the site has reached record-high numbers and we have

more eligible contestants — 27 total — than we’ve ever had before. That is quite gratifying. Here are the eligible names: Michael Peoples; Doug; Rudolf; CeeDee; Joaquim; BryanK; Gregorious; Giovanni Zanoni; GW; William; Bob Brooks; Don-Lucky; Bethellodge; Bob; Japhy; Jack; Geraint; Max; Michel; Robert; Baz; RL1856; Jason; Erich Schultz; Brian; Blipp; PFunk. And it is time to bring in the lovely Mrs. JC and place all of the eligible names on the desk and scatter them about and . . . the winner is . . . BryanK. Congratulations BryanK. The sealed Dex is yours. All you have to do is send us your mailing address in an email, to al@jazzcollector.com, and we will send you the record, free of charge, and we even pay for the shipping. Hope you enjoy it. I will spend some time pondering the next record for the next contest and I will probably post it sometime tomorrow.
The post Jazz Vinyl Give-Away: Dexter Gordon on Blue Note first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

There’s been a lot of Blue Note chatter on Jazz Collector lately, and some Dexter Gordon chatter as well, so, as I was looking on my shelves for a suitable item for the next giveaway, I was pleased to come across this: Dexter Gordon, Blue Note LA393-H2. This is a double LP from 1975, issued by United Artists as part of Blue Note Reissue series. It consists of a variety of Dexter’s work, stretching from his first album as a leader on Blue Note, Doing All Right, up to the 1965 date the produced Gettin’ Around. I wouldn’t have purchased this LP when it came out, since my sole interest was collecting original pressings, but somewhere along the way I picked up this copy and, in fact, it is

still sealed with a price sticker from J+R Music in New York. There’s some terrific music on this album, including The End of a Love Affair from Dexter Calling, plus It’s You Or No One and You’ve Changed from Doing All Right. What’s even better, the record will be given away free to one reader of Jazz Collector. As always with our contests, in order to be eligible to win you just have to comment on the site — anywhere on the site — between now and when the contest officially closes, which will be two weeks from tomorrow, on Feb. 26. Good luck, and thanks for commenting, it’s what gives Jazz Collector life and vitality.
The post Win a Free Collectible: Dexter Gordon On Blue Note first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

As always with our giveaways we have one copy that will go to a Jazz Collector reader who has commented on the site during the contest’s duration. This week we have a lot of newcomers to the competition, which is great. Traffic has been building pretty steadily on the site and we are now able to tally our monthly page views in the tens of thousands, believe it or not. In any case, those eligible for the Duke LP are:

Rudolf, Michel, DaveS, Max, Ceedee, Aaron, Japhy, Don-Lucky, Gregorious, RL1856, Don Robinson, GW, Brian, Geraint, Jack, Jan, Joaquim, Baz, Jason, Michael Peoples, Bob Miller. And we shall ask the lovely Mrs JC to do the honors and choose the winner, as usual. The names are written on paper . . . strewn on the desk . . . mixed . . . and the winner is . . . Ceedee. Congratulations Ceedee. It’s about time, right? Anyway, the record is yours and, as always, we will ship it to you free of charge. Just send an email to al@jazzcollector.com with your mailing address.

We are poring through our records now to decide upon another record for our next giveaway, which will be announced later today or tomorrow.

By the way, we are also selling some nice collectibles this week, including a few a couple of mint Mosaic boxed sets and some Billy Taylor early yellow label Prestiges. You can see our items by clicking Items for Sale here or at the top of the page above.
The post Free Duke Jazz Vinyl: The Winner Is . . . first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

Many in the media actually credited this performance with helping to revive Ellington’s career. This is not an original pressing, but is a later stereo reissue. It is in near mint condition, for both the record and the cover, and it is being make available free to one lucky reader of Jazz Collector. As always with out contests, the rules are quite simple: All you have to do to be eligible to win this record is to

post a comment on the Jazz Collector site — anywhere on the site, about any topic, between now and the end of the contest, which will be February 1. We ship the record anywhere in the world at no cost to the winner. Pretty good deal, if we most say so ourselves.

Just for the heck of it, we did a little inventory of previous giveaways. We’ve been doing the giveaways since October of 2008 (Rudolf was our first winner) and in that time we’ve given away 16 items. Well, we’ve had 16 winners: Two of the winners haven’t collected their prizes: Michel, you had won a Downbeat last year, which I see is still sitting on my shelf. And I still have a Charlie Parker Memorial Album — original pressing no less — won by Red Colm O’Sullivan, who has apparently abandoned us. We haven’t had any repeat winners because the contests have been set up to try to avoid that, but at this point, we’re expecting someone to win again. For the record the winners have been: Rudolf, Michael Haensch, Jason, Bethellodge, Dan Hodina, Michel, Troy Grooms, Jim Thornton, Maarten Kools, Red Colm O’Sullivan, Bob Brooks, Don-Lucky, Ian Thomas, Mr DW, Jorge and Brian, who still has to collect his Brubeck LP.
The post Jazz Vinyl Giveaway: Duke At Newport first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

As you may recall, we are giving away a copy of the following record: The Dave Brubeck Quartet Plays Music From West Side Story and Dialogues for Jazz Combo and Orchestra, Columbia 8257. This is a reissue, very nice pressing, of the album Bernstein Plays Brubeck Plays Bernstein. We offered it in recognition of Brubeck being chosen as a recent recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors. Did anyone happen to catch the broadcast? It was actually very warm and touching and the musical tribute was pretty good, featuring, among others, John Faddis, Bill Charlap and Brubeck’s sons. After the tribute I asked my wife and son: “So who do you think wrote Take Five?” They looked at me like I was nuts: “Dave Brubeck, of course.” It’s just the way these things go, I suppose. Most people also assume Duke Ellington wrote Take The A Train. In any case, we are ready to give away this very nice Brubeck LP. As always, the criteria for the giveaway are simple: To be eligible

all you have to do is comment on the Jazz Collector site — anywhere on the Jazz Collector site — from the time the contest opens until it closes. This time we have 14 eligible contestants and they are: Bethellodge; Don-Lucky; Michel; RL1856; Paul H; Bob Brooks; Doug; BLIPP; GW; Brian; Geraint; Charlie; Keith Fiala, and Max. And, drum roll please, the winner is: Brian.

Congratulations, Brian. We are happy to ship the record free wherever you are. Just sent an email to al@jazzcollector.com and we’ll get it out ASAP. For everyone else, stay tuned. We’ll be posting another free record contest either later today or tomorrow.
The post Dave Brubeck LP: And The Winner Is . . . first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

Here’s the record: The Dave Brubeck Quartet Plays Music From West Side Story and Dialogues for Jazz Combo and Orchestra, Columbia 8257. This is a reissue, very nice pressing, of the album Bernstein Plays Brubeck Plays Bernstein. We are offering it in recognition of Brubeck being chosen as a recent recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors. The broadcast of the event will be tomorrow evening in the States, on CBS. They usually keep it a surprise as to who the performers will be, but CBS has put up a brief video on You Tube with Brubeck’s four sons playing Blue Rondo A La Turk from the seminal Take Five album. We’re sure it will be quite moving, especially since the actual event took place on Dec. 6, Brubeck’s 89th birthday. As for the Jazz Collector giveaway:

This is a later pressing and it is in M- condition. We have it on the turntable now and it’s quite nice. We’re on the West Side Story side, Tonight, Maria, I Feel Pretty, Somewhere. It is what you would expect. Nice swinging jazz with some playfulness with the time signatures, some nice percussive Brubeck and, as always, terrific Paul Desmond. The other side features Brubeck in a Carnegie Hall concert with Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic from December 1959, almost exactly 50 years ago. If you’re in the U.S., check out the Kennedy Centers Honors show on CBS tomorrow and let us know what you think. Mel Brooks will also be among the honorees, so you’ll get to laugh as well as enjoy the music. In order to be eligible to win this LP, all you have to do is comment on the Jazz Collector site any time between now and Jan. 11, when the contest will close. As always, we provide the free record with free shipping anywhere in the world to the lucky winner.
The post Brubeck Honored: Kennedy Center & Jazz Collector first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

The item is this: Miles Davis, Milestones, Columbia 9428. This is not an original 6-eye pressing, but is a nice later stereo copy in near mint condition. We have the one copy to give away to one lucky reader of Jazz Collector who was wise enough to post a comment during the past two weeks and lucky enough to have his name plucked out of a hat by the plucky Mrs. Jazz Collector. And so, the names going into the hat for this giveaway are: Michel, Jorge, Dave S., Aaron, Don-Lucky, Jason, Rudolf, CeeDee, Bethellodge, Bob Brooks, Jan, Doug, Gregorious, Geoffrey Wheeler, Soulnik, Geraint and Marshall. A distinguished group if ever we’ve seen one. And so we shall

call upon Mrs. JC . . . and here she is . . . and her are the names crumpled up and strewn upon my desk . . . and here is Mrs. JC with the selection . . . and here is the winner . . . Jorge. Congratulations Jorge. I think you are a relatively new commentator on the site, so welcome and please keep commenting. In order to collect your price all you have to do is send an email to al@jazzcollector.com with your mailing address. We’ll take it from there and we’ll pay for the postage as well. Please stayed tuned later today or tomorrow for our next giveaway.
The post Jazz Vinyl Giveaway, Miles Davis, The Winner Is . . . first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

Let’s go with another classic this time: Miles Davis, Milestones, Columbia 9428. This is a stereo pressing, a later pressing, not an original. It is, however, in near mint condition. I have it on the turntable now and I’d guess this is the first time it’s been played. Considering that it is marked as “electronically re-channeled for stereo” it sounds quite good actually. I’m listening now to Cannonball Adderley’s solo on the track “Miles,” which most of us think of as “Milestones.” Anyway, this is a great record, recorded a little before Kind of Blue, with much of the same band, although no Bill Evans, Wynton Kelly or Jimmy Cobb. This one features Miles and Adderley and John Coltrane, with Red Garland, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones. The tracks are Dr. Jekyll, Sid’s Ahead, Two Bass Hit, Miles, Billy Boy and Straight, No Chaser. We have one copy of this LP to give away and we will do son on Christmas Day, December 25. In order to be eligible to win this record all you have to do is comment on the Jazz Collector site somewhere, anywhere, between now and Christmas Day. If you’re a jazz collector and don’t have a copy of this record, well, you should. If you are a collector and already have a nice mono copy, here’s the possibility of a stereo to have as a spare.
The post Jazz Vinyl Giveaway: Milestones by Miles Davis first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

OK, time to announce the winner of our latest give-away. This one is: Tal Farlow, Tal, Verve 8021. This is a nice Japanese pressing that is in beautiful condition and is being given away, frankly, because we found ourselves with an abundance of copies through a variety of mostly pleasant circumstances. Anyway, this record features Tal in a guitar-bass-piano trio with Eddie Costa and Vinnie Burke. It’s a superb record and of the era during which Tal was setting new standards for inventiveness on the jazz guitar. As usual, the record will go to someone who has commented on the Jazz Collector site these past two weeks. We may have a new record number of eligible contestants — 21 in all. Usually I mention everyone, which I shall do again, but I’m not sure if I should continue doing. If any of you has a feeling about this, and about having your name mentioned, please let me know. Anyway, the eligible names for the Tal record are:

Michel, Ville Iivari, Mr. DW, Ayrton, Erich Schultz, DaveS, Hohit, Bethellodge, Rudolf, Duonri, Rockie, CeeDee, Brian, Gilles Miton, Neil, Bob Brooks, Geraint, Don-Lucky, Chris, Gregorious and Jorge. As usual, we have called upon the lovely Mrs. JC to select the winning name out of a hat, and she did so last night and left the winning name laying upon my desk so that I could see it first thing in the morning, which is now. And I am opening the piece of paper and reading the name and now typing the name, which is Mr. DW. Congratulations Mr. DW. In order to claim your free record — we pay for shipping, too, so it really is free — all you have to do is send an email to al@jazzcollector.com with your mailing address. For everyone else, please stay tuned to the site later today and we will post the record for our next give-away contest.
The post Free Jazz Vinyl, TAL: And The Winner Is . . . first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

Okay, now we’re cooking. This is a great, great, great jazz guitar LP featuring Farlow in his prime in a fantastic trio setting with Eddie Costa and Vinnie Burke: Tal Farlow, Tal, Verve 8021. Costa was a great accompanist as well as an inventive soloist and it’s clear he had a great rapport with Farlow. So, why give away this wonderful record? Because I am loyal to my friends at Jazz Collector, of course. Well, it also happens to be that this is a Japanese pressing and, as I was working on my collection this weekend, I discovered that I actually owned three copies of the Japanese pressing in addition to my own original Verve with the trumpeter logo. How did that happen? Inertia, I think. Or something like that. Anyway, I have at least one copy too many, so I am happy to share it with one lucky reader here at Jazz Collector. In order to be eligible to win this record

all you have to do is comment on the Jazz Collector site — somewhere on the site, about any topic — over the next two weeks, until the contest closes on November 16. At that point we will pool the names of all the eligible contestants and put them into either a real or a proverbial hat and pull out the name of the lucky winner. For anyone who doesn’t know this music, particularly any guitarists out there, it’s worth posting a comment or two on the site to try to win this one. You’ll be quite pleased and even if you don’t win you’ll have had the joyous opportunity to share a comment, opinion or even a jest with your fellow jazz lovers out there in the world.
The post Jazz Vinyl Giveaway: Tal Farlow on Verve first appeared on jazzcollector.com.
