Have I missed anything? I meant that as a joke, but now that I’m looking I feel like perhaps I have missed something. I’m seeing a lot of records that would have gotten a lot of action, not getting much action at all. I know things always change as auctions get near closing time, but having been off eBay for a few weeks I have to say I am a little taken aback by the lack of activity. Has anyone else noticed this? In any case, there are many records that are getting bids, so let’s look at a few of those, starting with Miles Davis, Kind of Blue, Columbia 1355. This is an original mono promo copy with the white labels. The record is listed in VG condition, and the cover is also VG, with some writing on the back and a partial seam split. Certainly not the best copy you will find, but there are already 16 bids from 10 bidders and the price is up to $300, so clearly the demand for this one remains pretty high despite the condition.

Here’s a nice 10-inch LP featuring some very early Sonny Rollins: Art Farmer Quintet, Prestige 177. This looks to be an original pressing with the blue label. The record is listed in M- condition and the cover is VG. The auction closes in more than a day after this post and the bidding is in the $200 range.

Hank Mobley, Roll Call, Blue Note 4058. This is an original West 63rd Street pressing listed in VG condition for the record and VG for the cover, although the cover grading looks a bit optimistic to me based on a water stain on the back. The auction closes in a day and the bidding is in the $190 range.

Here’s a nice one that doesn’t have any bids yet: Booker Ervin, Exultation!, Prestige 7293. This is an original yellow label pressing. The record is listed in Ex condition and the cover is listed as VG+. Bidding starts at $200 and there is a buy-it-now price of $260.

The post Jazz Vinyl: Where’s the Action? first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

The same seller had Curtis Fuller Volume Three, Blue Note 1583. This looked to be an original deep groove mono pressing with the West 6rd Street address. The record and cover were listed in VG+ condition. The final price was $736.

John Coltrane, Blue Train, Blue Note 1577. This was a mono pressing. It looked like it had deep grooves, but there was no mention of deep grooves, ears, RVGs or any of the other markers – not to mention it was a New York USA label. And someone had sliced the cover on the top and spine. Who would do that, and why? Anyway, despite all of those issues, the record still sold for more than $200. BTW, am I the only one who wonders why they called the record Blue Train as opposed to Blue Trane?

One more: Mal Waldron, Left Alone, Bethlehem 6045. This looked to be an original red label pressing listed in VG+ condition for the record and probably VG for the cover. The final price was $580.
The post Four for the Holidays first appeared on jazzcollector.com.

Catching up on eBay, starting with Paul Chambers Quintet, Blue Note 1564. This looks to be an original West 63rd Street pressing in M- condition for both the record and the cover. The bidding is in the $250 range with three days left on the auction. How about Art Taylor, Tailor’s Wailers, Prestige 7117. This is an original yellow label with the New York address. The record and cover are both listed in VG+ condition, although the seller does mention “minimal noise,” which is better than lots of noise, but you do have concerns when there is mention of any noise at all. To be fair, I guess minimal noise does relate to some VG+ records, since VG+ is somewhat of a catchall description. Anyway, the start price for this record is $250 and so far there are no bidders.

Then there is this “Preview Copy” of Kenny Dorham, Quiet Kenny, New Jazz 8225. This looks to be an original purple label deep-groove pressing listed in M- condition for the record and the cover. The bidding is in the $100 range with nearly six days left. I would expect this record to be more in the $2,000 range when all is said and bid. Finally, there is Thelonious Monk, Brilliant Corners, Riverside 226. This is an original white label pressing and, believe me, after years of searching, you don’t find too many of these around, in any condition. This one is graded as VG+ for both the cover and the record. The bidding is in the $125 range with a bit more than a day left, but I would expect it to go for quite a bit more.

Catching up on some other items, I never did bid on that signed copy of Max Roach, Jazz in ¾ Time, Mercury 80002. It wound up selling for $152.50, which would have probably been under my offer, if I had been paying attention, which, obviously, I wasn’t. From that same auction was another copy of Sonny Rollins, Saxophone Colossus, Prestige 7079. This was an original New York yellow label that looked to be in VG++ condition for the record and probably the same for the cover. The final price was $1,453.87. Given the condition and the fact that the seller was the Jazz Record Center, I would have expected a higher price tag.

There was also Anita O’Day Sings Jazz, Norgran 1049. This was a black-label pressing with the David Stone Martin cover. The record was in M- condition and the cover was excellent. The final price was $130.37. I mention this record because I saw a terrific jazz concert the other night up here in The Berkshires, featuring a young singer named Veronica Swift. She is the daughter of the late pianist Hod O’Brien and the singer Stephanie Nakasian, who joined Swift as the headliner of the concert on Saturday. Both of these women can really sing and swing, and Swift also showed she can handle a ballad with a beautiful version of “Darn That Dream” in tribute to her father. Anyway, she mentioned Anita O’Day as her favorite jazz singer, then launched into a couple of great Anita showcases, “Sweet Georgia Brown” and “Tea For Two,” definitely as an homage and also with her own very musical interpretation. Anyway, she is a singer we will all be hearing more about in the years ahead, so if you get a chance to see her, check her out. Here’s a clip of Veronica Swift that was used to promote the concert. Not a bad backup band, either.

You don’t see too many of these. Thus one is listed in VG++ condition for the record and VG+ for the cover. The bidding is in the $900 range with more than three days left on the auction. We have seen a promo copy of A Love Supreme sell for as much as $1,358, according to Popsike, and it would not be surprising to see this record fall somewhere in that range as well. This listing is one of many nice items from the seller Carolina Soul, now and over the past few weeks.

We also have our eyes on Phil Woods, Woodlore, Prestige 7018. This looks to be an original New York yellow label pressing, listed in VG condition for the record and the cover. The price is about $80, so it might be worth a risk to fill in a gap in the Jazz Collector collection. Last week the same seller sold a slightly nicer VG+ version of the same record for $460. He must have bought some nice collection to have two copies of Woodlore, right? And while, we’re on the subject, here’s yet another copy of Woodlore on eBay. This one is in M- condition for the record and VG for the cover. The start price is $300 and so far there are no bidders. It seems like the Vinyl Gods may be having some fun at my expense this week, throwing all of these temptations my way.

The seller of that last Woods record, Bearlbebop, has also been active the past few weeks and has some other nice records for sale, including this one straight off my wish list: Walter Davis Jr., Davis Cup, Blue Note 4018. This looks to be an original West 63rdStreet pressing that looks to be in VG++ condition for the record and perhaps the same for the cover. The start price is $600.

In any case, I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t have bid enough to win the record anyway. The final price was $1,624, and who knows how much higher the winning bidder actually bid. Perhaps if it had been a mint copy, but I’m guessing that mint copies will now only be available in the $2,000 or even $3,000 bin. In any case, time to move on. The Jazz Record Center has a copy of Jackie McLean, The New Tradition, Ad Lib 6601. This is an original pressing. The record looks to be in VG++ condition and the cover probably around VG+. The bidding is in the range of $2,250 and the auction closes in a little more than a day. I would love to replace that record in my collection, and I like the fact that it is from the Jazz Record Center, but the price is beyond my reach, financially and philosophically.

Then there is Bill Evans, New Jazz Conceptions, Riverside 223. This is the original white label pressing with the photo cover. I still don’t quite understand why Riverside the changed the cover on this. Perhaps one of our readers can explain it. The record looks to be between VG+ and VG++ and the cover is probably just VG+ because there is tape on the spine. The bidding on this is in the $150 range. It is certainly an upgrade from the copy I have, but my interest in bidding and buying is waning at this moment, as you can probably tell from the frequency, or lack thereof, of my posts.

Let’s close off with a gem that seems destined for at least the $3,000 bin and perhaps even much higher. That would be Sonny Clark, Sonny’s Crib, Blue Note 1576. This is not only an original pressing with the New York 23 labels, it is also a “review” copy. Quite rare, indeed. The record is probably in VG++ condition and the cover is rated as Ex. As of this writing, there is one day left on the auction. The bidding is more than $2,700.

It is good to be back. Let’s catch up on a few jazz records we were watching on eBay, starting with an old standby: Miles Davis, Kind of Blue, Columbia 1355. This an original white label promo copy. The record looked to be in VG++ condition and the cover was VG+. The final price was $496, which isn’t bad for a promo copy. We’ve seen them sell for more than $1,000 fairly consistently in nice shape, and one even broke the $2,000 barrier, according to Popsike. To me, this is a record where the condition of the cover would be important, since the black cover tends to fade and, for a promo copy, a nice, sharp, minty cover would be nice. Perhaps other potential bidders felt the same way, which kept the bidding at a reasonable level? I have a couple of original pressings of Kind of Blue, both in nice shape, but I’ve never owned a promo copy. Still don’t.

Hank Mobley and Lee Morgan, Peckin’ Time, Blue Note 1574. This looked to be an original pressing. Condition was hard to judge based on the description, but I would put it at no better than VG. It’s the same seller as Hank Mobley, Blue Note 1568, from a couple of weeks ago and he acknowledges he doesn’t have a lot of experience as a seller. Also, I didn’t mean to insult him on the previous post, so I apologize if my comments were taken that way. This one sold for $788, a pretty steep price, IMHO, considering the condition, but many of these Blue Notes fetch a pretty steep price in any condition and all I’ve seen in the years I’ve been doing Jazz Collector is the price get steeper and steeper. If I would have bought all Blue Notes back in 2001 or 2002 when I first started on eBay, I could possibly retire today. Last time I looked the Mobley 1568 hadn’t sold, with a start price of $4,500. But I haven’t been on eBay regularly, so perhaps someone out there has more recent information?

Roland Kirk, Third Dimension, Bethlehem 6064. This was an original red label pressing that was probably in VG+ condition for the record and VG for the cover. The start price was $400, which was a little steep for this record and it didn’t sell. This is one of the few Kirk records I don’t own, but the condition and the price were not in my ballpark.

This one closes in about an hour: Lou Donaldson, New Faces, New Sounds, Blue Note 5021. This is an original Lexington Avenue 10-inch pressing. The record is listed in M- condition and the cover is VG++. You don’t often find these 10-inch Blue Notes in such nice condition. The bidding on this one is in the $300 range. It will sell for more.

There are more than four days left on the auction and the bidding is in the $170 range, with 13 bids. Curious to see where this ends up. We were watching a promo Kind of Blue a few weeks ago that had a $600 start price and no bidders — but it also had some condition questions. We have seen promo copies sell for as much as $2,700 in the past, but this one will not get to that level.

This was an original deep groove New York yellow label listed in M- condition for the record and Ex for the cover. When we first saw this record, the bidding was more than $1,000 and it hadn’t reached its reserve price. The record eventually surpassed the reserve price and beyond, selling for $3,938.

This one sold for more than $2,000 but, frankly, I thought it would sell for more, given it’s rarity: Kenny Dorham, Harlem Youth Unlimited, Jazz at P.S. 175. This was an original pressing listed in VG++ condition for both the record and the cover. I asked in the previous post: Is this the rarest of them all? No one seemed to say no, so I’m assuming perhaps it is. It did not get the highest price of them all, although the price was quite high, $2,225, in fact. I would LOVE a copy of this record, but not at $2,225, thank you.

Let’s check out the e-mail bag:

How about an jazz vinyl auction in Paris on November 24? How about anything in Paris? Here’s a note from a reader about the upcoming auction:

Hello, your site is wonderful. My jazz records collection will be sold in Paris at auction the 24th of November. Maybe you be gentle enough to evacuate this on your Web site. Here is the link to the auction to use. I am afraid it is in French . . . Regards. David Manet

And here is the link: http://www.ferri-drouot.com/flash/index.jsp?id=22909&idCp=46&lng=fr

We also have our reliable friend CeeDee weighing in with a bunch of links and the text: “Now might be a great time to sell, but if you want to buy, not so much . . . wow!”

And here are the links:

Miles Davis, Relaxin’, Prestige 7129. This was a New Jersey pressing. The record was VG and the cover VG+. It sold for $97.99, which seems pretty reasonable to me. Even low, perhaps.

Miles Davis, The Musings of Miles, Prestige 7007. This was an original New York pressing in VG condition for the record and VG+ for the cover. It sold for $300. Again, this seems reasonable. CeeDee — what am I missing?

Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section, Contemporary 3532. This looks to be an original pressing in perhaps VG or VG+ condition based on the description. The cover is VG+. The price was $363.99. Again, within normal range.

Kenny Drew, Undercurrent, Blue Note 4059. This was an original pressing with the deep groove on one side. How weird is that, by the way, that it was issued that way? Both the record and the cover were listed in Ex condition. The final price was $2,225. High, yes. Insanely out of the current market range? I’d say, not.

Eric Dolphy at the Five Spot, Volume 1, Prestige New Jazz 8260. This was an original purple label deep groove pressing listed in M- condition for the record and VG+ for the cover. It sold for $812.

Finally, there was John Coltrane, Crescent, Impulse 66. This was an original white promo pressing listed in M- condition for both the record and the cover. The final price was $404.99.

I’m sure many of you are way ahead of me, but please let me catch up on some of the interesting auctions we were watching, starting with Bill Evans, Waltz for Debby, Riverside 399. This was an original white label promo copy. The record was listed in VG++ condition and the cover looked to be about VG+ because a previous owner had stamped his name and address on both the front and the back. When I first wrote about the record, there were several hours left in the auction and the bidding was in the $265 range and I guessed that the final price would probably surpass $1,000. To my surprise, and probably to the surprise of many of you here, the final price was $2,248. And that’s not even counting the Global Shipping Program charge of nearly $475, which is discussed in the comments on the earlier post. I’d be curious as to who is spending this kind of money on these records, and why? Is it for listening? Is it for investment? Is it just for collecting and owning the history?

This was another one that surprised me with its high final price: Curtis Fuller, Blues ette, Savoy 12141. This was an original pressing with the deep red label and the deep grooves. It was listed in “E” condition, which I take to mean about VG++, and the cover was described as “very clean.” It sold for $811.50.

Those two Jimmy Raney 10-inc records wound up selling as well: Jimmy Raney Ensemble, New Jazz 1103. This was an original pressing in M- condition for the record and the cover. It sold for $394.10. Jimmy Raney Quartet, New Jazz 1101. This was also an original pressing in M- condition for the record and the cover. This one sold at its start price of $175.

And here’s one more big-ticket item: Cliff Jordan, Cliff Craft, Blue Note 1582. This was an original pressing listed in Ex condition for the record and the cover, although the cover seemed to have issues. When I first wrote about this one, it was in the $450 range and I speculated that it had a good chance to break into the $1,000 bin. It did, and then some, selling for $1,575. I’ve long desired this record, but have never been willing to pay the going rate. A few years ago, I could have had a mint copy on eBay for half of what it’s selling for now. In retrospect, maybe that was the thing to do.

Now that all of the excitement over the new site has settled in, let’s get back to the business of watching rare jazz vinyl on eBay, starting with Cliff Jordan, Cliff Craft, Blue Note 1582. This is an original pressing with the West 63rd Street address and deep grooves. It is listed in Ex condition for both the record and the cover, and the pictures show there may be some issues with the back cover for those who are sticklers. The bidding on this is in the $450 range with more than three days left. I wouldn’t be surprised to see this one sneaking into or approaching the $1,000 bin, which is certainly too rich for my blood, although this is an album that has long eluded me.

Here are a couple of nice 10-inch LPs that may not sell at a fairly optimistic (for the seller) starting price:

Jimmy Raney, Quartet, New Jazz 1101. This is an original pressing in M- condition for both the record and the cover. I love the cover on this one:

The same seller has another Raney record of similar vintage: Jimmy Raney Ensemble, New Jazz 1103. This is also an original pressing, listed in M- condition for both the record and the cover. Both records have a start price of $175 and neither one has a bid yet with a list more than three days left on the auctions.

I would expect this one to fetch a nice price: Bill Evans, Waltz for Debby, Riverside 399. This is an original white label promo copy, which seem to be highly in demand. The record is listed in VG++ condition and the cover is probably VG+. The bidding is in the $265 range and the auction closes later today. Do you think this will break $1,000? I do.
The post And Now For Some Rare Vinyl on eBay first appeared on jazzcollector.com.
