This week’s theme: Lou Donaldson Memorial on Blue Note: Featured artists include Lou Donaldson, Clifford Brown, Art Blakey, Horace Silver, Percy Heath, Blue Mitchell, Herman Foster, Donald Byrd, Peck Morrison, Arthur Taylor, Dave Bailey, Ray Barrett,Sonny Clark, Curtis Fuller, George Joyner, Gene Harris, Andrew Simkins, Bill Dowdy, Horace Parlan, and more

John Coltrane, The Believer, Prestige 7292. This was an original yellow label pressing with the New Jersey address. The record looked to be in M- condition and the cover was M- as well. The final price was $144.37. I’ve always felt this later Prestige original Coltrane pressings were a potential bargain. It was all original material, it was just issued after Coltrane had moved on to record for Atlantic. These are all excellent records, with Trane playing a lot of standards, often in quintet settings. Getting an original Trane Prestige for less than $150 seems like a good deal to me.

Oliver Nelson, The Blues and the Abstract Truth, Impulse 5. This was an original white label mono pressing that looked to be in M- condition for the record and the cover. It sold for $182.50, another potential bargain, IMHO. Jazz at JJ’s. We wrote about this one the other day, so you can click that link for details (my Internet is running slow, so I can’t link to it now). This one sold for $525.55. Dave Bailey, Bash, Jazzline 33-10. This one was in M- condition for the record and probably VG+ for the cover. It sold for $616.69.

Oliver Nelson, The Blues and the Abstract Truth, Impulse 5. This is an original mono promo copy with the white label. The record is listed in M- condition and the cover looks to be about VG++. The bidding is at $100.

This is one that is completely new to me:

Jazz at JJ’s. This is a three-record boxed set that doesn’t really have a label. It’s a limited edition pressing and, if the Jazz Record Center listing describes it as “very rare” you know that it is, indeed, very rare because they are not given to hyperbole. It features Buck Clayton, Vic Dickenson, Hank Jones, Kenny Burrell, Milt Hinton and includes a personal letter from the record’s producer to Milt Hinton. Looks like a pretty interesting collectible, one I’ve never seen. The start price is $200 and so far there are no bidders.

Marty Paich Quartet Featuring Art Pepper, Tampa 28. This was sold by the same seller who claimed exclusive access to the best of Leon Leavitt’s collection and was selling some other high-end items a few months ago. This one was an original pressing with the red vinyl and it was listed in M- condition for both the record and the cover. It sold for $2,000, on the nose. Hmmm.

Hank Mobley and Lee Morgan, Peckin’ Time, Blue Note 1574. This was listed as an original pressing in M- condition for the record and the cover. It sold for an even $1,300 and there was only one bid. Hmmm.

Dave Bailey Sextet, Bash!, Jazz Line. This one is quite rare, with Kenny Dorham on trumpet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Tommy Flanagan on piano. It was listed in M- condition for the record and VG+ for the cover. It sold for $1,111. No Hmmm for this.

Thelonious Monk, Monk, Prestige  7053. This is an original pressing with the cover art designed by Andy Warhol. The seller provides some interesting background on the cover. For instance, it notes that the cover was hand-written by Warhol’s mother, which we never knew. For the seller, it always pays to have nice detailed information like this. This record, which looks to be in M- condition, is currently priced at $540. 

Miles Davis, Bags’ Groove, Prestige 7109. This is listed as a yellow label. We asked the seller which address and it is a New Jersey address, so be aware. The record and cover both seem to be in VG+ condition. The current price is about $50. 

Dave Bailey Quintet, Reaching Out, Jazztime 003. This is an original pressing. The record seems to be in M- condition and the cover looks about VG. The current price is $305. 

Here’s one that wouldn’t normally hit our radar screen, but we’re sure some of you Jazz Collector readers out there will be interested: Albert Ayler, New York Eye and Ear Control, ESP 1016. This looks to be in M-/VG++ condition. The current price is $91.

Beverly Kenney, Born To Be Blue, Decca 78850. This is an original black label pressing. The record and cover are both listed in M- condition. The current price is already more than $200. 

Leo Parker, Let Me Tell You ‘Bout It, Blue Note 4087. This is an original pressing. The seller doesn’t provide a grade, but based on his description both the cover and vinyl seem to be in VG++ condition. The current price is $91. 

Roy Haynes, Cracklin’, New Jazz 8286. This is an original purple label pressing. Again, no grade from the seller, but it looks to be VG++/VG++. The current price is $77.

Marty Paich, I Get A Boot Out of You, Warner Brothers 1349. This is an original stereo pressing. The record is VG+ and the cover looks to be VG+ or better. The current price is $100.99. We’ve bought and sold from this seller and we know him to be very reputable. He also has some other nice records up today, so it’s worth viewing his other items as well. 

Curtis Fuller Volume 3, Blue Note 1583. This is an original mono pressing with the West 63rd Street address. The record is in VG++ condition and the cover is M-, still in its original shrink wrap. The current price is $122.50, but we don’t expect it to last too long in that range.

Dexter Gordon, Daddy Plays the Horn, Bethlehem 36. This is an original pressing. Both the record and cover are listed in M- condition. The current price is $325. 

Kenny Drew, This is New, Riverside 236. This is an original white label pressing. The seller lists the vinyl as VG++. The cover looks to be VG+. The current price is $52. We have it listed once in the Jazz Collector Price Guide at more than $150. 

Finally, here’s a beauty: Thad Jones, Detroit-New York Junction, Blue Note 1513. This is an original Lexington Avenue pressing. The record is listed as VG+/VG++ and the cover is listed as VG+. The current price is about $400.

Dave Bailey, Reaching Out, Jazztime 003. This was an original pressing in VG+/VG+ condition. Price: $348

Bill Evans, Sunday at the Village Vanguard, Riverside 9376. This was an original stereo pressing with the black label in M-/VG++ condition. Price: $296

Hank Mobley, The Turnaround, Blue Note 4186. This was an original New York USA pressing in VG+/VG condition. Price: $123

Dexter Gordon, Go, Blue Note 4112. This was an original New York USA Pressing in M-/M- condition. Price: $184.50

Dexter Gordon, One Flight Up, Blue Note 4176. This was also an original pressing in M-/M- condition. Price: $150.50

Bud Powell, Time Waits, Blue Note 1598. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing in VG++/M- condition. Price: $206.49

Benny Green, Walkin’ and Talkin’, Blue Note 4010. This was an original West 63rd pressing in M-/M- condition. Price: $213.50

Sonny Rollins, Volume 2, Blue Note 1558. This was an original West 63rd Street pressing in VG+/VG+ condition. Price: $195.50

Kenny Dorham and Jackie McLean, Inta Somethin’, Pacific Jazz 41. This was an original pressing in M-/VG++ condition. We had targeted this is a potential bargain. It sold for $71. What do you think? Definitely a very nice record.

I have a feeling this one also may have been a bargain: Eric Dolphy, Out There, Prestige New Jazz 8252. This was an original purple label pressing in M- condition. Price. $103.51

Charles Mingus at the Bohemia, Debut 123. This was an original pressing in M-/VG+ condition. We expected it to go for a high price and it did, also beating the dealer’s reserve. Price: $460

Then there were the two Tal Farlow LPs on Norgran: The Interpretations of Tal Farlow, Norgran 1027. This was an original yellow-label pressing with a nice cover by David Stone Martin. Price: $150 The Artistry of Tal Farlow, Norgran 1014. This was an original yellow-label pressing in M-/VG+ condition. Price: $151.40. Lee Morgan, Indeed!, Blue Note 1538. This was an original Lexington Avenue pressing that seemed to be in VG++/VG+ condition. Price $898

Barbara Lea, Lea In Love, Prestige 7100. This was an original New York pressing in M-/VG++ condition. Price: $229

I guess our mention didn’t help to generate any interest in Sal Salvador records, even this one with Phil Woods and Eddie Costa, Shades of Sal, Bethlehem 39. It had a start price of $49.99 and didn’t sell.
