For the Price Guide: Sonny Clark, Dizzy Reece, Monk

Since we work during the week, we often use the weekend to update the Jazz Collector Price Guide. Here are a few of the items will be adding after we complete this post:

Sonny Clark, Sonny’s Crib, Blue Note 1576. This as an original West 63rd Street pressing. The record was VG++ and so was the cover. The price was $747.

Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section, Contemporary 3532. This was an original yellow label mono pressing. The record was VG++ and the cover was VG+. Price: $240.50

Hank Mobley, Workout, Blue Note 4080. This was a mono pressing with the New York USA label. The record and cover were M- and the price was $335.

Monk with Warhol Cover Sells for $843

We had expected this record to sell for more than $1,000, but it didn’t: Thelonious Monk, Prestige 7053. This was a promo copy with the Andy Warhol cover and the New York label. The record was in VG+ or VG++ condition and the cover was VG++. The price was $843. A few weeks ago a copy of this record in VG condition sold for more than $2,000. Perhaps, as we mentioned before, things are softening a bit. Is the economy starting to affect the market for high-end jazz collectibles?

Today on eBay: Tracking Some 10-Inch LPs

I was watching the discussion about 10-inch LPs elsewhere on the site (click here) when I started doing my daily perusal of eBay and came upon a nice batch of 10-inch LPs being sold today by Euclid Records. We’ll see what this records eventually sell for but, if current price is any indication, maybe there’s something to the theory that interest in 10-inch LPs is declining. Of course, these things often run in cycles as well. Here are some of the items worth watching today:

Jay Jay Johnson, Blue Note 5028. This is a 10-inch LP featuring Clifford Brown being sold by Euclid Records. The record is in M- condition and the cover is VG+. The current price is just $67, which doesn’t mean it won’t sell for a lot more. Also from Euclid on the 10-inch front: Dexter Gordon, New Sounds in Modern Music, Savoy 9003. This is an original pressing. The record is VG+ and the cover is VG++. The current price is about $30.

Also for sale today is a nice copy of a record we expect to sell for more than $1,000:

Today on EBay: Miles, Monk, Warhol and More

We’re back after taking the weekend off. The week on eBay gets off to a decent start today, with a few nice items to watch for the Jazz Collector Price Guide. We have a few items of our own closing today, including: Andrew Hill, Compulsion, Blue Note 4217. This is a mono pressing with the New York USA label and is in V++/VG+ condition. It’s only $25, so it might end up being a bargain for someone. We’re also watching these items, from other sellers:

Miles Davis, The Musings of Miles, Prestige 7007. This is an original mono pressing with the New York label from Euclid Records. The record is in M- condition and the cover is VG++. The current price is about $130. I’m not sure how many of you ever go through the archives at Jazz Collector, but there are a lot of interesting items from the past that are worth finding. For instance, back in May 2004, I did a small birthday tribute to Miles (he would have been 78) and at the end I listed my Top Five Miles Davis records. I mention this, because this record, The Musings of Miles, was on that list. Click here to check it out. Read more

A Few More For The $1,000 Club

We have a few more records to add to the roster of jazz vinyl selling for more than $1,000. Interesting, based on my post earlier in the week and all of the comments (Another eBay Debate: What’s The Value of A Dealer’s Reputation?), two of the new entries into the club were sold by the reputable seller Euclid Records. They are: Sonny Rollins, Volume 2, Blue Note 1558. This was an original pressing. The record and cover were both in M- condition. The price was $1,259.56. The other from Euclid was Mal Waldron, Left Alone, Bethlehem 6045. This was an original red label pressing. The record was M- and the cover was VG++. The price was $1,281.  The third record selling for more than $1,000 was also one that was subject to quite a bit of discussion on the Jazz Collector Web Site (Today on Ebay, February 2, 2009). This was Thelonious Monk, Prestige 7053. This was the one with the Andy Warhol cover that was only in VG condition and still sold for $2,350.

Commenting on the Comments

If you’ve been watching Jazz Collector this week, perhaps you’ve noticed a lot of the back-and-forth discussion around two of our posts: Another eBay Debate: What’s the Value of a Dealer’s Reputation, and Today on eBay, February 2, 2009, which is dealing with the provence of the Andy Warhol cover on the record, Thelonious Monk, Prestige 7053. We’re thrilled to see all of the comments — it’s what we had hoped for when we started the site. We’ve kind of stayed back ourselves, but we just posted a comment on the article regarding the eBay debate. The gist of our comment, which you can see by clicking on the article, is that the market for jazz collectibles is driven by all of the participants in the market and focusing on any one group or groups of buyers misses the point, in our opinion. In fact, we are spectacularly grateful that the music we cherish is cherished as well by so many people around the world. Face it, if the fate of jazz were strictly in the hands of the American public, it would be a sad day for all of us who love the music. As for the Monk record and the Warhol cover, I’ve kind of left it to our readers to sift through this one, since I don’t have any definitive answer on the subject. It seems as if through the discussions, however, we may have reached some fairly accurate version of the truth.

Today on eBay, Feb. 2, 2009

Here are some of the items we at Jazz Collector are watching on eBay today:

The previously mentioned Euclid Records has a few nice items up today, including Charlie Mariano Sextet, Fantasy 3-10. This is a 10-inch LP in M- condition. The current price is $76.

Here’s another one for the $1,000 record bin, or perhaps even the $2,000 bin: Thelonious Monk, Prestige 7053. This is the one with the cover design by Andy Warhol. The record is only in VG condition and the cover is VG+, yet the price is already at $1,775. The same seller has another Warhol cover: Artie Shaw, Both Feet in the Groove, RCA 1201. This is an original pressing and it looks to be in at least VG+ condition. The current price is $71.

Finally, here’s a pretty Norgran currently in the $50 price range: Johnny Hodges, Ellingtonia ’56, Norgran 1055. This one is in what looks like VG++/VG+ condition.

Sonny, Jackie, Miles & Bird for the Price Guide

Here are some items we’ll be adding to the Jazz Collector Price Guide today:

Sonny Rollins With the Modern Jazz Quartet, Prestige 7029. This is an original New York pressing with the original Orange cover and the wrong catalogue number. It’s a very rare piece and this one was in M- condition, both record and cover. Price: $760

Johnny Griffin Sextet, Riverside 264. This was an original blue label pressing. The record was M- and the cover was VG++. Price: $294

Thelonious Monk, The Unique, Riverside 209. This was an original white label pressing. The record was VG+ and the cover was VG. The price was $161.50. Also from Monk: Thelonious Monk With Sonny Rollins, Prestige 7075. This was an original New York pressing. The record was VG++ and the cover was VG++. The price was $180.49.

Updating The Price Guide, Part 2

Here are some more items we’ll be loading into the Jazz Collector Price Guide today:

Jackie McLean and Company, Prestige 7087. This was an autographed original New York pressing. The record was M- and the cover was VG++. Price: 418

Horace  Parlan, Headin’ South, Blue Note 4062. This was a New York USA pressing — not original — and was in M- condition. Price $371

Zoot Sims and the Modern Art of Jazz, Dawn 1102. This was an original mono pressing. The record and cover were in M- condition. Price: $105.01

We were watching this one to see if it had much value as a collectible. Apparently not: Dexter Gordon, Live at the Amsterdam Paradiso, Catfish 336-337. This was a double LP with the records VG++ and the cover VG+. Price: $30.53

Johnny Griffin, The Congregation, Blue Note 1580. This was an original West 63rd

Today on Ebay, January 15, 2009

After a week of slow days, it was quite a pleasant surprise to log on today and find a large number of nice collectibles to watch, and perhaps even a couple on which to place a bid or two. So, without further ado, here are some items for the Jazz Collector files, and, eventually, for the Jazz Collector Price Guide:

Thelonious Monk, Monk, Prestige  7053. This is an original pressing with the cover art designed by Andy Warhol. The seller provides some interesting background on the cover. For instance, it notes that the cover was hand-written by Warhol’s mother, which we never knew. For the seller, it always pays to have nice detailed information like this. This record, which looks to be in M- condition, is currently priced at $540.

Miles Davis, Bags’ Groove, Prestige 7109. This is listed as a yellow label. We asked the seller which address and it is a New Jersey address, so be aware. The record and cover both seem to be in VG+ condition. The current price is about $50.

Dave Bailey Quintet, Reaching Out, Jazztime 003. This is an original pressing. The record seems to be in M- condition and the cover looks about VG. The current price is $305.

Here’s one that wouldn’t normally hit our radar screen, but we’re sure some of you Jazz Collector readers out there will be interested: Albert Ayler, New York Eye and Ear Control, ESP 1016. This looks to be in M-/VG++ condition. The current price is $91.

Here are a bunch more from today:
